For that sort of price, you might be able to pick up something like a Mk 5 Golf from Auto Trader? The mileage might limit options, but the Mk 5 Diesels are built like (and sometimes sound like) tanks. Mine is coming up on 12 years old, has 206k on the clock and still going strong.
