(Is it a hell of a fluke that England should have had two S Mahmood's in 15 years, or is Mahmood a really common surname?)

I think it boils down to where you grew up. People who grew up in rural areas would rather spend time in the countryside than the city, and vice versa. I have friends in London who only leave the city a couple of times a year at most and it genuinely doesn't bother them one iota. I have a mate who ...

Fwiw I suspect that walking off the formal waymarked trails you can find advertised on council websites is fairly intimidating if you're not used to it. JMK's point has some validity, but having been born a fair time after this happened to me and what I suspect is the vast majority of England fans who weren't at Twickers that day it is simply the song of England rugby.

Just on this, to me the main reason for the rise of populism is the absence of any purpose for the United Kingdom. The UK is unique to an extent as a country; it was formed to a great extent for mercantile reasons, to enable trade and imperial ambitions globally. Of course Empire played its part bu...

Devil's advocate here - is it that millions of Chinese are emigrating in an unusual pattern or is it just that there are 1.5bn of them and they emigrate in the same proportion as any other country, thus creating what looks like an exodus to us?
