Re: England the only Northern Hemisphere side in the 2023 RWC semi-finals. Da funk!

I’m looking forward to this England team meeting South Africa. I'm guessing because you think England will be stomped by 40 and you plan to watch with a nice lunch. Fair enough and that is the most likely thing. But if there's somehow a disaster for SA and the wheels come off the ref blaming will b...

England's record is amazing. If the RWC was all there was people would think we were a giant or something and not, you know, like Wales or Scotland.

Re: Is this the worst outcome for the World Cup?

I will be honest, I am glad we are through to the next round but it would have been good for either of the two big QFs to have been the final, with the chance of a new winner. Can still happen of course with Argentina. I was honestly worried France would beat SA but then fall to England. That would...

Re: Is this the worst outcome for the World Cup?

The beauty of the RWC is it's unpredictable and difficult. You can be a powerhouse and come unstuck or pretty weak and go far. That's almost never true (Rugby has one of the lowest incidences of upsets in the major sporting world) , and the fact that it sort of happened this weekend is probably wha...

Re: Is this the worst outcome for the World Cup?

Because they get to avoid New Zealand? Well no because they don't. Because they just seem to do better in the RWC than in the other comps. In the Rugby Championship they got outgunned for 20 years just like Aus. But in the RWC they've won as many as NZ while playing in two less. I don't know why th...

Re: Is this the worst outcome for the World Cup?

Ouch. Because it's true. In the Rugby Championship and when they were in Supe rugby they are/were just like the Aussies. Meaning they had some good results from time to time but ultimately, they are just swimming in a sea of blackness. The RWC is their equalizer. Because they get to avoid New Zeala...

Re: Is this the worst outcome for the World Cup?

I'm a RWC purist. There's nothing grim for rugby if the usual best win it. There's nothing stopping others from stepping up. And others sometimes have (Aus and England) or have come damn close (France). Ireland and France have been awesome this time even if they're out now. In the end the toughest w...

1987 semi final France v Aus. I had only been in NZ since the previous year and was still getting into rugby. The first World Cupo made me a rugby fan. Me and a mate just roared on France right through the game and it was awesome. Great memory of the game and of him.

New Zealand 10 Australia 8 England 8 South Africa 7 France 6 Wales 2 Argentina 3 Scotland 1 Hopefully some of the Tier 2 sides like Japan and Italy can force their way onto this list in tournaments to come. Enzed got dumped in the quarters by the French in 2007 so they can't have made 10 semis. Mus...

Re: All Northern Hemisphere semi finals?

Unfortunately, the NH teams just don't get knockout rugby. I thought Ireland were naive turning down the kickable points early. Wow we're cocky now huh? I remember NZ not getting knockout rugby in 99 and 2007 against France. And Australia not getting it against England in the quarter final in 2007 ...

Re: Did England Chock?

They did not choke. They were physically beaten again and again by a much better side. The English were arrogant and very overconfident. For the whole week all we could hear was how England would win by double digits. It was all England this and England that. Take a look at Erasmus after the match....

Often when the team you support wins big it's tempting to say that the oppo were only so bad because you made them look bad. It's rarely that true, but it was today - that was a ridiculously good NZ side who just got put under intolerable pressure right from the start and couldn't find a way out. E...

In the last few years Wales have beaten England and SA regularly. They have just as big a chance of being champions as anyone. And knowing that has got to make them about the most determined Welsh team in f uck knows how long. Their players have a chance to be basically life long heroes.

Whoever wins out of SA and Wales will also have played their final. That game is going to be a war.

In the final two equal and battered teams will go at it and whoever simply wants it more will probably be the winner.

Wales might be World Champs!
