Re: Your best ever national team by unit
Richards, Winterbottom, Shelford definitely played in a different era. Had that excuse Back did not, he was a professional rugby player See above, plus don't associate Buck with that thug. Buck was hard, and you wouldn't want to get into it with (like that Welsh lock) but he was dirty like Richards.

Re: Your best ever national team by unit
I played against him in a memorial match for a team mate (a copper) , his strength was unreal. You'd need to play under the old laws or else he'd be red carded out of the game today. Bit of a head kicker like Winterbottom, wasn’t he? Don't associate the pride of the Magpies with that thug. ;)

95 Mike catt is about as worthy a fullback as ugo. I have Dean Richards at 8, just an unreal player, positional awareness, handling and strength all outstanding. On the NZRU too I think the issues that Australian Rugby are seeing are coming your way too. I think they already are, just look at the Warriors and the League support these days in Auckland and the games popularity amongst youth, but some prefer to keep their heads in the sand. For the All Blacks it's hard to go past the 2008-2015 sides except maybe front row and back 3, but not sure of that's just recency bias. Front row: Dowd, Fitzpatrick, Brown (90s), older poster might the 60s guys in there? Locks: Whitelock, Retallick Loosies: Kaino, McCaw, Read Halves: Smith, Carter...

There's no way an NPC would generate the same income as SR. If the NZR thought so, it epuod abandon SR altogether. Why share money with RA when it could go on its own? Sky mostly funds NZ rugby (alongside separate AB deals), NZ derbies have higher viewership than cross border matches, Sky would jus...

Re: The state of the NZRU..
NZR was set up in the amateur era, and its governance structure has barely changed. The only way to shake it up is with a Super League-esque shake up. The provinces will never agree to reduce their power and influence. A Super League-esque shakeup wouldn’t be the worst thing necessarily, but who ar...

No it would not. Then why isn't the NPC getting the big cash at the moment? There's no way the NPC would be able to agford SR type wages for all participants. SR serves as a lead up to the tests, a narrative build up. The tests standing alone would not be as big.a commercial success. Are people sup...

Ok let's explain the business of Super Rugby. Without SR there won't be professional rugby in either NZ or Aus. The NPC won't generate enough for elite players to want to stay. That's the attitude that's killing rugby. The reason the NRL/AFL continue to expand is so they have more content to sell to tv, sponsors etc. NZ are happy to limit the content of their main product. I feel the same about this game as I did about the England v Ireland 6 Nations game - can you both lose?
Hope it's a good game, and I'll be cheering on the 3 Magpies in the team (we've gone over quota - woohoo).

Uncle. When thinking dour, the last team I would think of is the Chiefs. If anything, of all the franchises last year they were by far the most enlightening & D/Mac was usually front & centre. For me the Crusaders had the most dour game plan, using an extremely well oiled front 8 to pave the way. t...

I too question D/Mac. He is a mercurial player granted, but best suited to those helter skelter matches where the pill is being thrown about with gay abandon. Against sides like the Boks or even Ireland he can be negated very easily. However, I too am frustrated seeing a NH 10 running the show in o...

No issue with this analysis. Only thing I’d add is that RMo is in the conversation because the gap below him is so large. DMac is great but yet to be proven in a dour game plan that sometimes needs to be played. Then there’s daylight and a couple of green 1-2 cappers. One of our 5 clubs is having t...

Yep exactly what I meant, I was a bit clumsy. NZ has finally seen the end of the echo boom from the McCaw/Carter golden era. I think there is a bit of NZ pulling back on player loss. Particularly in the halves. However Oz sides paired the price over the last 24 months and I think we’re starting to see a bit of fruit.
