Re: Best Sci-Fi Novels
For military sci-fi, I really enjoy the Warhammer 40,000 books, especially those authored by Dan Abnett. Abnett's pretty much the only serious writer there, sadly. The erm Ciaphas Cain by Sandy Mitchell stuff is a good 40k-themed Flashman series, but it's pretty repetitive. I was a big fan of the I...

Once you've got the Iain M Banks bug, Excession is his best "pure sci-fi" novel IMO.

Re: Battlefield 3 thread (ID's in OP)
mr bungle - USAS+frag got nerfed ages ago on PC :) Why wouldn't they do the same on the consoles? They have complete control over the platform on PC and can roll out updates. MS have a certification process that's a complete pain in the arse, Sony not sure, and I suspect DICE are wary of difference...

Re: Battlefield 3 thread (ID's in OP)
Was playing Rush on Kharg today. Starting off on the carrier, I used the M98B (the big sniper rifle) and bipod from the deck of the boat. Of 12 bullets fired, I had 8 headshots, ranging from 460m to 577m in distance. :smug:  proof or GTFO I didn't want proof, I want people to be useful a...

Toga Flaps JM, are you next? Next for what? For the record, I would suggest that Lawes is known for high profile big hits and (increasingly) cheap shots. He grabs the attention for these aspects, and his bread and butter is overlooked. I'm not a great fan of the stats sites, they vary too much betw...

USAS with frags shouldn't be killing snipers. Oh, hang on - you've not had the USAS/frag nerf on the consoles have you? Ouch.

Re: Battlefield 3 thread (ID's in OP)
M416 is a good all-rounder, you probably won't find any other assault rifles to be as useful at medium/long range engagements. The F2000 and FAMAS are ridiculous bullet-spewing monstrosities that will basically guarantee headshots at close quarters, and the AEK is somewhere between those and the M41...

Re: Battlefield 3 thread
Yeah, I don't "do" the whole bipod thing. I appreciate it's a style of play that appeals to be people who aren't ex oldskool FPS nutcases like me, but I am aggressively pushing towards objectives where possible. Even on defence I'm trying to flank round and cause major damage. If you want to keep it...

Re: Are Electric & Hybrid Cars Dead? - Joule Unlimited
So in a different era with completely different species that had evolved over a long period of time to suit the conditions, the oceans teemed with life.
OK.
That's not a great way to predict what's going to happen now. The timescale is completely different.

Re: Battlefield 3 thread
Sorry, I should've been clearer - the 249 is a great gun because it fires so fast and has very little recoil.
For the "heavy hitters" (i.e the 7.62mm guns), the M60 is rubbish, the 240 is king and the PKP a decent alternative depending on how you play.

Re: Battlefield 3 thread
i liked the m240 as well traded up to the one with the bigger bullets (M249?), and am now shite. is it worth sticking with it until i unlock the M60, or should i just stay with the M240 ? You're doing it wrong - the M249 is the 5.56mm, the M240 is the 7.62 (along with the M60). The 240 is the M60 o...

Recon gets to the heady heights of "OK" once you're a colonel and have a lot of experience at your fingertips. You end up basically being an assault class with average killing power that swapped the paddles for a mobile spawn point. Other stats just for shits and giggles. Spot which gun I like the m...

86 hours. Way behind some of my mates (they're 200+) but still way more than I expected. I came very close to ditching the game last night - just one frustration after another. Wonder how much my comedy games (i.e. unscoped sniper rifles or changing weapon every time you die) affect this - probably only a few hours in truth.

I don't consider vehicles to be the depth of the game at all, really. The depth comes from the various roles, the variety of game modes, and the fact that it can cater to all styles of gameplay. The unlockables are par for the course really. Yeah. I dunno. I just find it's all fairly straightforwar...
