Also moving objects have been running those waters for a few centuries at least so perhaps the stationary object should have anticipated that.

The pier wouldn't have been designed for a neopanamax vessel back in the 70s. Why there wasn't a berm/artificial island or the like protecting the pier is difficult to understand. I'm sure there'll be urgent checks for an y similar instances across the globe in the coming days.
