Mike Brown, long ban incoming

Post by Mr. Very Popular »

Absolute scumbag move, stamped on a players head, needs to have the book thrown at him.

I'll add the rider that it is slow motion so the view is artificial but still that looks bad.

Looks like a deliberate stamp to the face and eye-area of a prone player. That should be a career-ender for a 35 year old.

It actually looks worse at normal speed.

Always mouthy but never saw him as a dirty player. Poor form

It's a really bizarre stamp. The little look before he did it suggests it was deliberate but the fact it caused him to be unbalanced looks odd.

Certainly can't see how he avoids a decent ban. What's the high end for contact with face?

It's a weird one. Think it was probably deliberate, and thus a really bad one, but there's just enough doubt there (off balance trying to sort his feet out etc) to muddy the waters a tiny bit

He’d already had a yellow. What’s the ban for a deliberate face stamp? Could well be career over.

He looks down at Taylor's torso, his head is behind him. He puts his foot down then looks down. Both feet are in the air. It's a red, of course it is. Totally reckless. But don't know how anyone can insist it's deliberate. 400+ games, 1st red. Has a reputation as a niggly character, but not a dirty one.

High end for stamping is 12+ weeks with max 52 weeks.

Did he make contact with the eye area? Wonder does that count under that heading if he did? That's max 208 weeks!

Reckon he'll only get the high end 12 weeks, maybe a bit more but not anything like a year.

This is where I netted out watching it live.

Frustrating that, out of "14 cameras" at the ground, we only saw a single replay repeated where Brown wasn't in frame for half of it.

There's no argument that he didn't know where the player was, and it does appear that Taylor was pulling him to ground. But Taylor had let go of him by the time the stamp happened, (albeit only a brief moment before) and it did seem like a deliberate movement.

Mike Brown might be a horrible, niggly, competitive plum; but he doesn't have form for anything like this.

Suspect we'll see a low end ban with contrition, mitigation and a clean record.

The looping is confusing. It makes it appear he looks down before he tenderly wipes the sweat off the eye ball with his sprigs but the footage is reversed. He looks down after contact.

I think at best he didn't give a shit where he was putting his boot, knowing full well the player was there.

If I'd accidentally stamped on a player's face, my first instinct would be to stay there and see if he was ok & apologise profusely. I think any decent human being would.

Are there any further shots of post the incident, because I've not seen any where this happens.

No surprise to hear Austin try & excuse it - he did similar to Kevin Putt & copped a long ban for it, didn't he?

Looks awful and is at least reckless but I would like to see some different angles before making any judgement on intent. Would need to see the different motions and Browns balance in play before throwing a player under the bus on this sort of incident. Browns long been a niggly but clean player as his record shows.

He may well have never done anything like this, and not meant to stamp on the guy's face, but players still have a duty of care.

You can accidentally nearly decapitate someone with a poor high tackle and still get a heavy ban, despite not meaning to. Very dangerous play means heavy punishments, even if it's entirely unintentional.

Probably because he's a fullback and rarely gets involved in actual games ;).

He's been one of those players who you see unnecessarily runs into the back or side of try scorers to push them when they have scored and already got up again. While technically clean, his previous conduct so to speak is certainly unnecessarily unpleasant.

He's not on here anymore but you're not far off.
Would be surprised if it was a long ban. No previous history, no damage done (so a step rather than stomp - although for some reason Wasps bandaged Taylor up, but when the bandages came off later he was unscathed), reasonable case could be made that in realtime it looks like he just loses balance (not enough for it to be purely accidental IMO, but they may see it differently), and of course the provocation of Taylor repeatedly holding his leg. Of all that, the ones that probably matter are the clean record and the lack of force, but it's still dangerous and will still probably end his season
I'll be fair to JMK and link the thread so you can see his clarification, although not sure that helps!
