Maori All Black and Chiefs Player Sean Wainui killed in car crash.

Very sad news out of the Bay of Plenty NZ today. Sean was a real delight to watch on the field, and a great player.

25 years old, just had a kid.

Bloody gutted.

Horrible news. :((

I remember him doing well for the Maori when, iirc, he wasn’t near a Super squad. Reading that he was only 25, he must have been a kid then! Seemed to be doing very well as a centre recently.

The poor man and his family. RIP.

Current Super Rugby record holder for most tries scored in a single match, dotting down 5 times against the Waratahs.

This is shit news. And yes, he was v. good to watch.

It's also a bit of a reminder for older folk, like me, of just what a difference the various inbuilt safety features in cars have made. When I was much, much younger (and an avid RL follower), it was not uncommon for well-known players to die in car crashes.

Now it is, and a damned good thing too.

Was it his kid in that viral video of that toddler doing a Haka?

Sad news.

Wrds never seem adequate - especially when it involves the loss of a young person with everything in front of them. :(

Thoughts to his family and loved ones.

Very sad news. RIP. Was a Crusaders player too so no doubt many people will be impacted by this news on that organisation as well. Would be great to have the Chiefs and Crusaders play for the Sean Wainui Cup every year in his memory.

Far out, what do you even say to that? Just gutting news. In his prime both in life and as a rugby player.

It's always sad when an ex-player dies, but it seems to hit doubly so when they're still a current player and you see them on TV week in week out, then suddenly that's just gone. Just shit news.

The news brought a colleague of mine to tears today. She's good friends with his lady. Sadly, he also leaves behind two young children.

How tragic, last game I saw him play against the Tahs and got a bag of tries and I thought I wanto watch him live again. Feel so sorry for his family. This is just so awful, words escape me. Really loved watching him play for the Chiefs, will be missed.

RIP big fulla.

Mint, dual team haka.

Facts of the event aside, Wainui was a seriously talented rugby player taken way too soon.

So extremely sad. :(

Wasn't aware until the US-AB game yesterday when they paid homage to him.

No. In fact, there's some very careful wording in the story linked to in the opening post.
Bay of Plenty police issued a statement this morning saying one person had died after a single-vehicle crash at McLaren Falls Park.

Police were notified that a car had crashed into a tree at around 7:50am. A family member confirmed to NZME that the 25-year-old father Wainui was the driver.

As is the way in NZ reporting in these matters, one is invited to read between the lines.

I too have heard similar, the biggest question for me is what was he doing in the park, which is at least a kilometre away from the main road, what was he doing there

You might recall I shared a very personal story about myself in 2018, which you responded to. And I can tell you that the media got an important detail in that story very, very wrong. One day when we catch up in person, I'll tell you the full story.

Sadly that was the first thing I thought of. Good to think we've moved slightly from the drink driving culture but not so happy with the replacement.
Rest in peace Sean.
