Underrated rock and metal bands

Post by Bindi »

Helmet - seem to be somewhat forgotten now. Were completely different to the grunge around at the time (early 90s). Short, sharp repetitive distorted guitar riffs.

Blood Incantation - Modern death metal. No idea why they are not in the big leagues with the likes of Bohemouth and Gojira. Awesome.

Igorrr, they should be the word on everyone mouth but they are still underground.

Listen to their last album.
No, it’s not a plugin/virtual instrument/DAW wizardry you are earing.
It’s all played with real instrument by real musicians.
Those effects? Analog synth magic filtering + tons of genius.

Then ZZtop. They did amazing albums in the 70’s and Degüello is the friggin best rock blues I ever heard.
I wonder how only La Grange and Gimme all you Lovin, which I find ugly, have gone mainstream.
Seen them for the 3rd time 5 ys ago, with Tower of Power as opening act.
A very nice live

I have spammed the metal and music threads with igorrr. Absolutely brilliant. TBF the modular rack he uses is no more or less an instrument than a DAW.

One of the annoyances of the Covid biz was them cancelling their tour - I'd never seen them live :(

True, but it’s a whole lot more complicated than with a DAW.

Don’t get me wrong I love electro stuff DAW crafted, I’m not an analog purist, really NOT

I finally got to see them live a couple of years ago in Sydney after missing out on them in NZ when I was a teenager as I was on a rugby tour - in Sydney.

Then I got to see them a year later when they came back. So that was awesome.

Haven't checked out his twitter but will have a look.

Neither - at the Metro.

I dunno if they count as "under-rated" as they're pretty popular. But Swedish "melodic" Viking Death Metal band Amon Amarth are pretty much the only "hard metal" I've got into since Justice For All.

If Sidewave is a solo gig by a band playing at Soundwave then nope, this was in 2017/2018.

Not a band, and not underrated by guitar players and avid music fans, but Buckethead is not known in the mainstream (apart from 4 years in Axl's solo band).

Gifted, versatile and chaotic musician.

I'm much more into Chris Poland as a solo guitarist - chronically underrated by the masses, adored by Megadeth fans and those who know all about incredible music. His band/project Ohm went completely Spinal Tap by having two drummers die, almost literally on the stool.

I really loved Meantime and parts of Betty. But for a guy with a jazz guitar degree they were surprisingly one dimensional.

Probably my favourite track. Love the drum breakdown from Stanier.

These are always difficult as I never really know how big old bands were.

Mutha's Day Out
Stuck Mojo
Life of Agony
Sentenced
Jane's Addiction - were probably pretty big in fairness

Oh, and the most criminally underrated bands now are wishbone Ash and Jethro tull. When the who, stones, led zep etc are seen as being rock gods, and you compare their back catalogue to those two from similar roots and era.

As a fan, I don't think Hellhammer/Celtic Frost are underrated - considering they only really released a few EPs and a single album of any real significance ("Into the Pandemonium" is OK as well I guess), they are still held up as one of the most influential extreme metal bands of all time. They were never going to have mainstream commercial success due to the way/style they played, so the fact they are so universally known in (non mainstream) metal, probably puts them at about the right "rating" stand point.

I reckon I must have had at least 40-50 CDs in my collection that were pure-HH/CF worship and that many again from bands who named themselves, their albums or songs after HH/CF songs. It's basically it's own sub-genre ("Oooooooh-RAH Metal" as I call it  ).

Hell, they even got their own song dedication from another (fairly well known) band:

I nominate one of those bands that had a massive hit, which was actually one of their weaker efforts - Blue Oyster Cult.

Had a string of excellent albums in the 70s and then the awesome Fire of Unknown Origin in the early 80s. Still active now. And yet mostly just known for Don't Fear the Reaper (and maybe a little for Godzilla.

Jethro Tull featured renaissance shirts, tights and playing f**king flutes while perched on one leg. They were never gonna be seen in the same light as the heavyweights.

Who said Thrice? Thrice were amazing up to Artist in the Ambulance and then they fell off a cliff with that fourth album. Haven't listened to them since.

Ignite are an amazing band that should have had more success.

No Fun at All are criminally unknown. Part of that was they broke up in 2002 at their height of their popularity and then reformed a decade later when forgotten about.

Strung Out have steadily built and are bloody amazing, but should get more.

Strike Anywhere are one of my favourite bands and just dont get anything.
