As a fan, I don't think Hellhammer/Celtic Frost are underrated - considering they only really released a few EPs and a single album of any real significance ("Into the Pandemonium" is OK as well I guess), they are still held up as one of the most influential extreme metal bands of all time. They were never going to have mainstream commercial success due to the way/style they played, so the fact they are so universally known in (non mainstream) metal, probably puts them at about the right "rating" stand point.

I reckon I must have had at least 40-50 CDs in my collection that were pure-HH/CF worship and that many again from bands who named themselves, their albums or songs after HH/CF songs. It's basically it's own sub-genre ("Oooooooh-RAH Metal" as I call it  ).

Hell, they even got their own song dedication from another (fairly well known) band:

Should've scrolled down

Pretty sure he's from the LA glam rock scene of the 80's that you're such an expert on.

Ignite are an amazing band that should have had more success.

No Fun at All are criminally unknown. Part of that was they broke up in 2002 at their height of their popularity and then reformed a decade later when forgotten about.

Strung Out have steadily built and are bloody amazing, but should get more.

Strike Anywhere are one of my favourite bands and just dont get anything.

That would be me because I love them. It's not that they fell off a cliff, they just transitioned to a completely different genre.

Artist In The Ambulance was the bridge album between their early metallic-tinged hardcore punk and the full blown post-harcore they embraced with Vheissu.

They are pretty big for a post-hardcore band and do get a lot of love, but it's nowhere near enough imo. On one of their US tours in 2019 they were the support band for Bring Me The Horizon which is completely ass backwards even if BMTH hadn't gone from producing average metalcore to whatever you call their current shte.

Had a string of excellent albums in the 70s and then the awesome Fire of Unknown Origin in the early 80s. Still active now. And yet mostly just known for Don't Fear the Reaper (and maybe a little for Godzilla.
Yes agreed, saw them at a gig in Newport circa 1989 or 1990.
For soft rock I quite liked Asia.

The whole album is great. Once Sky Sport NZ played an AB montage with this;

Sure he’s a technically gifted guitar player but he’s got no soul. There are plenty of musicians with less technical ability who are better players.

The guy that was in Praxis with Boosty Collins, Bernie Worrell and Brain has no soul?

Probably you only listened to his more techno/heavy material where he puts emphasis in some kind of 'computer' sound.

Maybe you should try some of the other albums that he has in a completely different style:
A Real Diamond in the Rough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3HxXpU6jHg

Shadows Between the Sky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj6DBi264DI&t=4s

Colma: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 80097E66F3

Population Override: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7xYtyJGQHU

Be a good sport and give them a try :)

Very much so.

Band-maid are probably the best Hard Rock band on the planet and I doubt a handful of people here would have heard them.

https://youtu.be/ZpAYnVJX9CY

Ningen Isu have been brilliant for years but again no western exposure.

Throw in Lovebites, Trident, Fern Planet, Aldious and you have a huge untapped scene for most people.

Another couple that need more love are Unleash the Archers

And The Warning

Faith no more got quite a few mentions on the overrated bands thread, so I would say that they are underrated.

That thread got so absurd that is unreadable  .

Patton has done some weird stuff, but FNM is untouchable.

Simply because they were one of the best live acts going around, put out two perfect back to back albums in the 90's and should be more generally regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time...

THE JESUS LIZARD.

Also, because they are the greatest band of all time...

SUN CITY GIRLS.

Bindi wrote: Wed Sep 09, 2020 10:49 pm Helmet - seem to be somewhat forgotten now. Were completely different to the grunge around at the time (early 90s). Short, sharp repetitive distorted guitar riffs.

Blood Incantation - Modern death metal. No idea why they are not in the big leagues with the likes of Bohemouth and Gojira. Awesome.
If you like Helmet, I recommend The Mark of Cain. They've got that same staccato style riffing but 10000x heavier.

Hands down the best live 'heavy' band I've seen (an i've seen a few).

The two guitarists are engineers in Australian Army. From Adelaide no less.
