Interesting selection of 2 7s by Weasels. Clearly worried about the Reds back row.

Rabble website said as much:
Coach Dave Wessels has today dropped a selection surprise by naming both Brad Wilkin and Richard Hardwick in his starting backrow to face the QLD Reds in the Vodafone Super Rugby AU Qualifying Final.

The two renowned openside flankers will share the task of nullifying the breakdown threat posed by Reds captain Liam Wright and the competition’s leading onballer Fraser McReight.

“We think they’ve both performed well,” explained Wessels of his two flankers.

“We definitely picked two sevens to put some pressure on the ball ourselves but obviously Brad Wilkin’s is playing really well, and Dickie Hardwick probably had the best game I’ve ever seen him play last week.

You wouldn’t have to play two opensides to secure your ball, if the bloody backs got stuck in to the dirty work occasionally. :x

It’s a genuinely interesting match-up.

On form, you have to go Reds. Hell, they deserve it.

But this the Rebels’ first gig in the finals. This is their Ducky date with Molly Ringwald. Anything could happen. Maybe this time Andrew McCarthy doesn’t get the girl!

But, nah. I doubt it..

Reds have the edge upfront no doubt. Power and pace. A better pack. Lacking though IMO at the lineout, the under-appreciated jewel of the setpiece (how often do you have the opposition set back 10m?)

In the backs, we’ve got a more interesting mix. Without trying to do some deep dive, I reckon we could say that the Reds have the more exciting backline but the Rebels have the more experience under pressure. At the risk of upsetting Sluggy, I reckon this will be JOC’s big day. He is IMO at the peak of his extraordinary powers. If he follows through, he’ll be one step away from WB locked-in. If he falters, then Towny’s love-bunny Toomua will gain his equally-deserved slot

This is the battle of the 10s for the ages. Kasparov vs Fischer

I can’t wait. Woot woot!

Go Australia!

Still can't believe they didn't rule the last Rebels try against the Force a knock on. Criminal.

That's an important point, and one of the main reasons the Reds have been so good hanging on to their own ball. Stewart is basically another 7 out there. He's bloody excellent at the ruck, offensively and defensively.

looking at the teams, and their form, in my view Rebels chance of winning is based on a super strong kicking, kick chase game, and stealing some lineout ball - ideally in the wet against the Reds (play in Reds 22/half, and make them play it out).

Looks like it will be completely dry.

Assuming Reds strong favourites.

I just watched the NZ game waiting for this to start. It involved the Tasman team (SRA contenders for 2021?) and a team in copies of Pontypool jerseys.

I am unconvince. I reckon the top 5-6 Shute teams would knock them over on a dry afternoon. I know they are missing All Blacks (although Read played a half for Pontypool), but so are the Shute teams.

Great to see 2 Aussie players contesting the high ball.

Very willing tackling. Hope they keep it up.

Gotta feel for Koriebette, playing outside DHP, he is not seeing much ball. He has gone looking for some action.

It would not be the worst thing ever if the Reds stopped hoofing it away.

Kick goals JOC, but kick
sparingly otherwise, please.

He ran it and broke the line, and I thought, gee maybe Shanky is right... and then he booted it straight back to them, again.

Do you think Thorn told him to do that...

Thorn or McKay may have done so, yes. When a player in a key position takes the same option a whole lot, he may well be playing to the plan.

It goes again the grain to say it, but... when he play's what is front of him, he is looking OK. Maybe Rennie can get the best out of him.

Sluggy. You’d be wise to at least give credence to my JOC tips. He’ll be playing for the WBs and if he happens to have a blinder and win the game, you need to have said something before it happens so you can claim it. ;)

It’s weird. They’ve gone away from what they’re good at. Thorn needs to settle them down and get down to basics. Perhaps a couple of rolling mauls, to get back in the groove, build pressure.

Rebels are dying with the high ball but hopefully they have figured it out and won’t keep it up. Reds are out competing them in the air. Put it downfield and out, and pressure the Reds line out.

Daugunu and Korebeite can’t be in the same Wallaby squad, neither can kick, and Korebeite is possibly the best player in Australia right now.

The Rebels half back is dire, and Kelleway is a real step down from the other Rebels backs.

Reds back row when they are at the ruck are a step about the Rebels players but the Rebels right 5 is outplaying the Reds by a margin.

Also, Petaia is an absolute star, his attack but also his defence is amazing for someone so young.

Also how good is the Rebels scrum!
Orr is the form loosehead in Australia IMO.
