I don’t mind ‘And she was’ as part of my mix tape

But being reminded perpetually of the quirky guy from Uni who was a proxy for ‘twat’ isn’t that appealing

Change my mind...

Good point

That’s two good ones, though

About the same number as Rick Astley

Bennett's take on it was better than Byrne's.

Stop making sense is a wonderful live album....the only instance I can think of where the live performance of songs are far better than the studio versions

The best example of this is Judas Priest Unleashed in the East. Priest's 70's albums are probably the most important albums in the development of heavy metal (at least albums 2-4), but the versions of the songs on Unleashed turn the power up to 11 and improve on the studio versions massively. One of the greatest heavy metal albums ever, and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually rate live albums.

Edit - and Talking Heads are great. You're going to lose your status as the White Dean Jones if you don't offer a full retraction, shanky. :x

I can think of several bands whose live versions of songs ended up better than what went on the album.

Stop Making Sense is a classic. The movie of the concert is fantastic from start to finish.

All the Johnny come latelys came aboard after stop making sense .

Instead start at the start 77 - and go from there .

Phenomenal band , pretty much peaked in the Rome concert 1980 with the extended group .

Saw them twice , but Byrnes American Utopia tour ( film ) every bit as wonderful .

The first new record I ever bought (and second record) was More Songs About Buildings and Food. I was still playing it too, until my turntable broke a couple of years ago.

Cool !

Quite how people rate the Stop making sense live versions as exponentially better than the original recordings leaves me abit mystified.

Fear of Music and Remain in light are remarkable recordings .

Not sure if this is a big song of theirs or just an album track but it jams hard

Can't believe this band is American, always thought they were Brits for the longest time. We used to be so cool.

I’m surprised that someone with your deep appreciation for the world of art could fail to appreciate the innate vibrancy of the Stop Making Sense body or work. Widely acclaimed as the best live concert footage presented, the extravaganza goes so much further than being merely a live gig, of course. The creative genius of Jonathan Demme is on full display here capturing the manic frenzy that was the collective creative genius of Talking Heads.

Brilliantly choreographed, the film develops the characters of the band, beginning with the solo appearance of Byrne, quirkmaster extraordinaire flailing about the stage with a boom box and acoustic guitar, delivering the dark threat of Psycho Killer with all the menace of an art critic on the juice before introducing the other members of the band one by one, most notably with Chris Frantz arriving complete with drum kit on a stage box wheeled in ready to go. From there the gig takes us on a giddy roller coaster of emotion as the band fleshes out into full tour mode with an ensemble the brilliance of which we shall likely never see again. Syncopated rhythms, glorious melodies at times offset, cascading chorus lines jousting at all times with the chief protagonist in Byrne, jerking about in a frenzy one moment, eerily still the next, appearing after the break in the big suit so immortalised by Kermit the Frog on the Muppet Show some years later.

This is a triumph of ambience and substance Eug. This is a primal diversion in rhythm and joy. Of course people... real people with pulses and jiggly hips relate to this thing. It’s an organic event that washes over its audience, lifts them up and takes them to A Place. It’s not some earnest head nodding listening circle sitting about a coffee table in a cold arsed hellhole in student Christchurch carefully analysing the New York club scene that could have birthed such eclectic meanings.

It’s turgid throbbing head banging rock and f**king roll mate. It bangs. That’s why people like it.

I saw , liked the film .

However had already seen them twice by then live .

I’m looking forward to catching the Spike Lee movie of American Utopia , as I was lucky enough to catch the tour . And what a performance it was !!
However no matter how good the film I doubt I’ll feel anything like I did watching him actually live .The Remain in Light big band concert was barely better, and that was the most overwhelming experience I’ve had at a concert .

This really isn’t worth arguing about .

I’ll simply stick to the original statement , the live versions most definitely didn’t and don’t utterly eclipse the original Eno produced recordings .

[*]Kinda thought America Utopia was better choreography myself .

Even his tour before doing the songs he did with Eno , the dancers were hot !

Nothing wrong with and she was .

It's hard to imagine a tighter band.
