Shit, didn't realise he'd been sick. That's a shame.

Gutted.
Whether you liked Van Halens music or not EVH was unquestionably one of the most important musicians in rock.

RIP

Had never been into his music, but obviously an enormous talent.

Was just doing a bit of reading since I heard.

Interesting factoid, maybe everyone knows, but I didn't.

He did the guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat it.

Apparently did the session work free as a favour for Quincy Jones.

very sad to hear of the passing of the great guitarist Eddie Van Halen. when I was still rehearsing with frank zappa (1977), rob fetters came out to hollywood. we walked sunset boulevard for hours, talking about life, and finally popped into the whisky a-go-go. there was a cool band with a great guitarist playing. both rob and I had recently been playing guitar using our right hand index finger on the neck (later called “tapping”). we were astounded to see the guitarist was using the same technique. we thought we were the only ones doing it. we looked at each other and said, “he’s doing that same thing we’re doing!” then we listened some more and said, “and he’s doing it better!!” 🤣
of course the band was Van Halen.

It’s the year that just keeps on giving.

:(

Sad day indeed.

Phenomenal guitarist.

What the fudge?

:((

I didn't even care for his band, or even the whole scene they came from, but he was so f**king nasty you couldn't deny it.

RIP

I put on the occasional song from them. Panama gets the kids going. But reading the tributes it hit me just how innovative and trailblazing he was. He truly redefined an instrument and you can't say that about many musicians.

I was just looking for a similar quote I remember reading a while back from a different guitarist. Trouble is, I can't remember who it was, but one of the famous ones. Apparently in the early days, EVH would turn his back to the audience while playing his solos, and this particular player was at the show, standing at the front, trying to work out what he was hearing. He couldn't see Eddie's fingers, and would shout up at the stage "How are you doing that, you little shit!?!"

It just amazed me the amount of times, across an amazing array of genres and age groups, that his name would come up as a major influence of a given guitarist.

If your favorite guitarist is under 55, he's your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarist.

RIP - greatness.

I guess he finally tapped out.

"SILENCE, EARTHLING!!!!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaYADHcpdng

edit: In an appalling display of faux reverence, my main guitar for the past 5 years has been a Peavey Wolfgang Special, it has served me well so cheers Eddie for taking the cash from Peavey and overseeing a cheap Musicman knock-off. I sure appreciate it!

Van Halen was my gateway band into hard rock. I didn't really have an interest in rock music as a kid (just top 40 pop and stuff) but moved to the USA when I was 10/11. 1984 had just been released and it was a massive album. Literally played everywhere. We had cable TV (I'd come from a town with 2 TV channels) and spent much of the day glued to MTV. Hot for Teacher, Jump and Panama were all on high rotation. I probably listened to 1984 100 times in 6 months.

Then I discovered their older stuff. Van Halen I and Van Halen II became my favourite albums and they hold a special place in my heart. As does Eddie. Dude was amazing. RIP.

EVH took a call from Quincey Jones who said Jacko loves all the fast twiddly diddly stuff he does on guitar ... could he pop into the studio and do a solo on a song he’d been working on.

"OK, 'ABC, 1, 2, 3' and me? How's that going to work?" responded EVH. Half way through recording EVH tells Jones they want the solo over the wrong part of the song and makes a suggestion to play it elsewhere ... which changes the song structure. 20 mins later Jackson walked in and Eddie explained "I just changed your song." Jackson loved it. The rest is history. Van Halen fans started listening to Michael Jackson, Motown fans start listening to Van Halen. 6 months apart both artists release their biggest selling albums.

Apart from the invention of the solid body electric there have been 2 clear seismic shift in electric rock guitar. The first was Hendrix and the second was Van Halen. They are the goal posts at each end of the field. Many great players in between but those 2 were THE innovators.

It’s incredible that a band that gave us EVH also featured Sammy Hagar. Talk about opposite ends of the talent spectrum.

I didn’t know of this happening with Dimebag after his tragic death. Gifting one of his greatest gats to be buried with him.

The next day, according to Bennett, after being unable to get in contact with Durst for 24 hours to retrieve his gear, Van Halen decided to take matters into his own hands, driving to Durst’s house in an assault vehicle he had bought at a military auction.

“He got out wearing no shirt, his hair in a Samurai bun on top of his head, his jeans held up with a strand of rope and combat boots held together by duct tape. And he had a gun in his hand,” Bennett writes.

“That asshole answered the door,” Bennett quotes Van Halen in the book. “I put my gun to that stupid f**king red hat of his, and I said, ‘Where’s my shit, motherfucker?’ That f**king guy just turned to one of his employees and starts yelling at him to grab my shit.

“Eddie Van Halen stood on the front lawn of a residential home in Beverly Hills in broad daylight, smoking a cigarette while holding a gun on Fred Durst as he went back and forth from the house to the assault vehicle, lugging amps and guitars.”
