Slightly less cash but more exposure via their multiple and FTA platforms. They market their product to a wider audience.
That said all FTA networks (5) have broadcast rugby on FTA at some point. The two public broadcasters aside (SBS, ABC) none have been a great partner for the game as they have with the big two domestic sports AFL and NRL. Ch7 probably had a decent go on the ol days before they showed their real hand and put rugby on the backburner for AFL. 9 is the league channel, always were probably always will. They did a shit job at the 2011 WC but no FTA networks have since Ch 10 in 2003. Its like 9 are not to be trusted but these days networks have multiple stations and platforms.
I hope they take this seriously and not bury it somewhere. Im sure Macca will ensure this with his network CEO experience.
Current broadcaster Foxtel is certainly doing us no favours and is still employing Phil Kearns.

There's the suggestion that they'll be targetting the Saturday time slot. Which has no NRL overlap.

Sure one would hope its programmed to let rugby breathe alongside mungo madness. I wouldnt have confidence only for thye fact that Macca seems to know what hes doing and has to get done. FTA is the great Holy Grail rugby hasnt had in terms of domestic professional competition. Its not in full but that is the way the market has changed for all sports.

I actually don't bother much with the history channel now, because it is full of shows featuring the ancient aliens guy, and you get better, less generic stuff on youtube.

If foxtel lose the rugby I'll ask Pat to come over and help get my smart TV set up for Stan or whatever.
Stan/Netflix/Amazon Prime + Kayo is still cheaper than Foxtel

Looks like the deal with Nine Media/Stan is done.

My living costs are set to increase in 2021 as I add a Stan subscription to my other ongoing subscriptions.

Major changing of the guard for rugby in ths country. I hope it works out and the FTA aspect ensures our best players become household names.
Fox served the sport for some time but it has really been sitting in their study on the hard to reach shelve collecting dust for a number of years now. I wont miss them.

Good news. Kayo carries so much sport from all over the world so will most likely keep it.
Will now have to get Stan.

Foxtel is old school. Good for RA

Edit - cheeky feckers, they've already increased Stan's cost prior to this!
Stan chief executive Mike Sneesby was coy on how much the sport package - which will include other sports - will cost but it is expected to fall in line with current Stan subscription prices.

"We will be launching sport as an add-on package on Stan. More details will be (available) closer to launch but it will be an add-on package to our entertainment package," Sneesby said.

Good of the new regime to follow the same blueprint as Raelene even after the coup.

Overall this is good to see.
I think RA have held out and definitely got a better deal than originally offered by Foxtel, and seems broadly in line with later offers from Foxtel (but with the FTA component being looked for).

On the FTA whilst i think it is great - i'm not sure what it will do to grow the game. Hard to know what % of kids watch FTA anymore, especially FTA sport. So may not improve the numbers - might improve the audience watching overall- which does have a brand/monetary / awareness benefit. Especially if there is a programme of support in schools / clubs to grow the game (off a better level of recognition and awareness).

So Rugby has effectively jumped from one subscription TV provider to another subscription TV provider. With one game of SR per week broadcast on FTA. I'm unsure how this is a great outcome for RA? The game will still exist behind a paywall, won't it?

Yes, but every saturday afternoon there will be FTA rugby in every household in the country, as well as shaking up the current presenters etc so there is a more positive attitude being presented rather than the constant negatively from Kearns etc

One game is better than no games on FTA, but it's only a small gain. I actually quite like the Kearns/Kafer comments team. I find Kearns quite funny, even if he is very parochial.

You and I may laugh at him, but he absolutely turns people off with his negativity. When you compare a below standard game of NRL to SR, the NRL guys make it sound like a miracle on grass, and the SR guys can't stop complaining about scrums, or handling, or the ref, or something. Just dour, negative stuff.

Yep, and I believe it has been reported as FTA "live". The soup has previously been on FTA on replay the next day but that's merely cold soup ... as useless and worthless as a pile of beans.

We're looking at 11 to 18 weekends of Saturday pro club games available + another 8 or so weekends of Tests in a watchable time on FTA, then another eventually (say) 5 Tests at o'dark o'clock for tragics.

So potentially 26 weekends a year where there will be actual FTA ratings. They won't all be gangbusters but it reduces the cloak of invisibility. It's still a long way back for Rugby Union in this country ... amateur park footy aside, it was close to dead in the last few years.

Obviously FTA is also becoming obsolescent - but NOT for a few years yet. Traditional big box Pay TV will be dead before FTA goes.

Being a league fan and seeing the energy they put into promoting that game I cant believe you are saying this.
In past times I would not stand for 9 covering rugby as they always were NRL first and couldn't service two rugby codes but now they have several FTA channels and the game can no longer grow mould on Foxtel.
Ch 10 do it token coverage for Wallabies and paid peanuts.
I cant see the game getting any better than this. I think even the A league would be happy with such a deal they are in trouble.

I think it's much better, it's all positives, away from Murdoch, 1 game a week on FTV, bundled with an entertainment sub service.

Even if they raise the price of Stan $5 - $10 personally I'm still saving as I'll boot Kayo to the door and be spared the misery of watching the Warriors each week.

I hope you are right, and Channel 9 get behind Rugby and promote it in a big way. With just one match of SR broadcast every weekend, I'm not sure how much advertising the sport will get. I presume they'll show mostly Waratahs matches?

Yeah that's a fair comment.

What I hope is that they promote the f**k out of Rugby on Stan on their FTA channels? I also hope that the single SR game they show on FTA rates very well and there is a push to increase this.

It ill be interesting to see what other content is on Stan Sports. You'd think they'd need more than Rugby to be sustainable?

I will subscribe to it for the Rugby, and I'd like to see what how much packages cost. Will ideally get a family pass so my daughter at uni can watch as well using our account like she does with Netflix and Foxtel GO.
