DTH Van der Merwe

He played in three WCs for Canada and scored great tries, the blonde winger in the link below:

About 2009 or so I was at a post-match function after a WF/Blues game. Few big names there - wasn’t a bad Blues side. One of the WF players had a word to Dougie (that he was my favourite, etc.) and he came over to my table, introduced himself and chatted for about 15 mins - lovely fellow. My mate and Mrs were pissing themselves and I copped a bit of stick off a few others later on about it. I didn’t give a fark! Think I floated home.

Drico.

Came along when Leinster and Ireland were shite, and managed to rise above it. Gave us the hope that the future, for both, would be better, and retired after a 15 year career having helped both province and country compete and be successful at the very top level.

Koos? Unless you have a personal connection (which would explain an otherwise odd choice) and that’s a nickname, his name’s DTH (Daniel Tailliferre Hauman).

From my hometown. Played for my team Llanelli. Our best player. Wales' best player (arguably). Presented me with my fist rugby trophy when I was a kid, days before he went off as Lions captain to tour NZ. One of the greatest Lions. And an utter legend of the game. Absolutely solid humble guy too.
Sadly he wasn’t up to much in that tour .
Let's keep it positive shall we. Raise our heroes!

Juan Smith. Hard as nails, no bullshit, never dirty type of player. Always in the right spot, great rugby brain, and massive engine. Unfortunately career cut a bit short by injury.

Saw him at the Holy Grail with McGOAT and JDV, all ripped off their heads. Blokes and birds were approaching them all the time. Must have been so fricking annoying. From what I witnessed, straight-up lovely chap. Actually all three were very accommodating.

Blanco was magnificent.

Like this. He didn't score it, but he started it, and was captain that day I think
But he's French.

So it would have to be Winterbottom, Deano, Jonno or Futzy.

Amongst the current lot / active players, maybe Radradra? But plenty of candidates

So many good names on this thread though, it's been fun as i read through the posts - "oh yeah, that guy was amazing! holy sh*t, that next player was so fun to watch, so good!"

Watching that again, something that is really missing nowadays is appreciation of excellent play, even when it comes from the opposition. The whole Twickenham crowd cheered and applauded that try - not something you can rely on nowadays. Professionalism?

Used to run around the garden pretending I was Blanco and dreaming big dreams.

Unfortunately ended up more like Neil Jenkins (not saying he was bad, but a million miles from what I had in mind).

My favourite rugby player is a giant of the game whose career ended before I was born. Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop. Born in Victoria, played Australian Rules, switched to playing rugby almost by accident, ended up in an Australian team that won the Bledisloe. Captained Victoria to victory over New South Wales. Studied pharmacy and medicine.

During the Second World War, earned eternal respect and admiration for his work caring for fellow POWs on the notorious Burma Railway.

As for players I have seen: Mike Gibson, JPR Williams, Serge Blanco, Michael Jones, Stephen Larkham, and Hugh Perrett (played for my club, Eastwood, in the Shute Shield: he also played a few games for Sale Sharks, Bath, and the Rebels). Hugh was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 15.

We did not get much rugby on tv in the US but I remember just loving Mark Andrews (i know, hated by a lot)...and played for the Sharks who were one of the few teams we could watch.

And since then, I was probably the biggest DOC fan (so easy to be a POC fan) and now I look most forward to watching Jamie George, not sure why, but just love his game....(of course, never want them to beat Ireland)..
I had a great night on the piss with the Sharks team after they had crushed the Waratahs in Sydney, in 1996. It was a private function in their hotel (Darling Harbour Park Royal). There were several well dressed rather hot women in attendance, who were mostly ignored as the singalong, with Jeremy Thompson playing guitar, was too much fun. I smoked a joint with a future Bok (not naming him), and remember chatting to Mark Andrews. Good bloke. I even got on with James Small.
Now I’ve channeled my inner Globus, I’ll get back on topic. Unusual for an Aussie-it’s Michael Jones.Cnut could have probably played any position, barring front row, and maybe halfback. Absolute physical freak, with rugby smarts to burn.

Its a shame he got lazy and we only saw a few magnificent years of him.

But he could run like no other:
- Had the balance
- Had the power
- Had the agility
- Had the dancing feet
- Had the speed

And because of that he made it look so easy!

Indeed, he was so good it almost made NZ Rugby forsake its role as Spiritual Guardians of Rugby by attempting to select him. Lucky nothing like that ever happened before or since.
