Re: Australia poking the Chinese bear
The other problem for the CCP is that the mainland and Taiwan economies became significantly intertwined in the 90s-00s. If they wreck the Taiwan economy (which they probably could get enough ashore, temporarily, to do) they wreck their own as well.Short Man Syndrome wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 5:26 am Was just curious. Am pleased to hear that ‘force’ is theoretically impossible, I know Keelung pretty well, it’s a nice spot. I worry for Taiwan, though.

What is Labor’s plan for the Kowtow Embassy? Which of the 14 conditions is it happy with? None of them is acceptable because all will reopen conduits to CCP influence. Or does Labor agree with all 14 conditions, because China has made plain all will be required for re-engagement?

To be fair, Howard and Rudd thought no different than what all of the rest of Western world leaders thought. The governments of Howard and Rudd took the easy path of deeper economic engagement because they misjudged China. They thought that a liberalised economy would free Chinese politics. Instead, it has turned out that China is seeking to illberalise ours. Hoocoodanode?

China's trade punches flailing in the air as new barley markets buy Australian.., and the price of inferior grade product rises for Chinese buyers as a result.
Those damned free markets just won't do what the CCP wants.

First ever Australian malting barley exports to Mexico, other China alternatives open up
On Sunday, 35,000 tonnes of WA-grown malting barley was shipped to Mexico and is believed to be the first ever shipment of the commodity from Australia to the central American nation...demand for Australian feed barley from Saudi Arabia was set to jump from almost nothing in 2019-20 to more than two million tonnes this year.. Saudi Arabia is the second largest barley importer in the world, behind China.
Meanwhile, Australian feed barley exports to Thailand and Vietnam are forecast to double this financial year, CBH says.

As an aside, I notice that the Australian govt hasn't repeated its megaphone diplomacy with China that initiated this trade war. I guess there is no Donald Trump to impress anymore? It's great to see that our govt is acting with the nuance and maturity that we've asked

The BBC World news was banned from China after these stories. The sad thing is they look to be stories of corruption for personal gain, rather than of a deliberate strategy to, ah, win hearts and minds, to use an old fashioned phrase. Too embarrassing for the utopia of the proletariat, one imagines.shanky wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 9:40 am What a lovely bunch

It has never surprised me that masses of people continue to walk across the northern RSA borders into the Republic, post 1992, even though the average shanty-town life experience is third world, given the available alternatives in sub Saharan Africa. The key word being "walk". Whether RSA claims these largely economic refugees are the equivalent of real refugees is of no concern to any objective observer; they inflate the numbers.JamesJames wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 10:36 amThe quota is 12 000 to be exact. What is surprising is that they were doing it during the apartheid years. Which, ironically would have meant that eventually the minority government would have been swamped, even if it did not adopt a more graceful exit path.

-Maybe not in Aus, but "shanty town" is considered a demeaning term in SA. We call them "informal settlements out of respect for the people living there."
- It would surprise you because you may not understand the African concept of ubuntu. "umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" is isiZulu and kinda means "a person exists by virtue of shared humanity". And while the overwhelming pressure on our scant resources has sparked some ugly xenophobia, ubuntu still underpins most human behaviour here. Our African brethren from other countries have integrated well and make a valuable contribution to the economy.
- There wasn't a huge influx of African immigrants during the apartheid years. Some Namibians, white zimbos and the odd Mozambican. Black africans had to carry a travel document called a dompas, so foreigners were easily picked up.
- our Northern border is an entirely arbitrary construct drawn up by white Europeans. It cuts through areas populated by ethnic groupings like the Tsonga, Tswana, se Swati etc. They have migrated over for centuries over that imaginary line. So not surprising that it feels completely natural for them to do it.

Nice try, knucklehead. Straya has a higher percentage of OS-born citizens than any other country with a population > 11 M. or thereabouts.
And yeah nah, not too many are a 'South African doctor, promising test batsman, Pakistani spin bowler or something similar'.
Straya's treatment of asylum seekers shits me intensely and is something we Strayans have reason to be ashamed of, but any notion that inbound migration is a trickle is easily disproved by the numbers.

We're deeply aware of our shameful past and do not try to pretend it didn't exist. Only the other day I learned that there were over 60 000 cases of institutional sexual child abuse during the seventies in Australia. Mostly of non-white children. I was shocked to learn that there have been almost no prosecutions. I didnt know that native australian children were forcibly removed from their families well into the 1970's. They're doing something similar with the Chinese Uighurs I believe. Its been so little publicized in this country and no Australian I've ever met has raised it, despite wanting to talk endlessly about my experiences as a coloured man under apartheid. And before you get your panties in a twist, "coloured" how I identify ethnically.grievous wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 11:49 amIts a Anon multiMungoMan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 11:40 amJamesJames wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 9:40 amYep the rules for immigration are if you're a South African doctor, promising test batsman, Pakistani spin bowler or something similar its welcome to Australia. When you talk about race relations and Saffers you must understand that about 90 percent of us are eminently qualified to talk about the subject. We've suffered white European subjugation for close to 4 centuries. Your Queen and her empire came under the guise of emancipating the slaves but was just as tyrannous.
