Implications for the Test Championship:

Australia will drop to 69.2 and will need 89 points from the series against South Africa to go past New Zealand. That can only happen if they win at least two Tests and draw the third, in which case they will get 93 points from the series. Had Australia not dropped those four points for slow over-rate in Melbourne, they would have been on 70 even with a defeat. In that case, the runs-per-wicket ratio would have come into play (since teams have played an unequal number of series, the series wins isn't being considered in this cycle); currently, Australia's ratio is 1.42 while New Zealand's is 1.28.

India will move up to 71.67 with a win and will need 80 more points against England to top New Zealand. They can achieve that with a 2-0 series scoreline in the four Tests.

Australian fans, what's the post mortem for your team? Will there be changes for South Africa or do you think the selectors will show faith with the core of this XI? The batsmen struggled at times, but the bowlers also struggled to take 4th innings wickets in the last two tests. Lyon and Starc didn't have their best series and Cameron Green didn't take a wicket for the series.

i believe both Aus and india need to win their repsetice series 2-0. Aus in Sth Africa (who arent that strong right now) ... but Aus aren t great either. India can certainly win a 4 test home series 2-0 vs England. NZ reallt need SA or End to win a test.

Would be fantastic for indian supporters but Headingly kills it as i had skin in the game. plus the England win was never favourite. India had this from some way out

Incredible performance by India. Deserved winners of the series and they have unearthed a lot of new talent.

Australia’s cricket side needs to do some soul searching. Maybe we are not as good as we thought? The last two pitches played pretty well for 5 days or maybe our bowling was not up to the Indian batting lineup....without Kolhi?
I’m guessing something will change before SA.

Huge credit to coach Shastri. a fine player in his day who had great success in Australia. Was under pressure after the CWC 2019 and losing to #1 NZ 2-0 away from home. What he has done to get his side fighting and grafting is remarkable.

There is nothing contrived about Paine. Where past OZ skippers have had a hard edge, killer instinct, win at all costs mentality, he’s comfortably level headed and calming.
Are you suggesting that, for example, Ian Chapple, Alan Border, or Steve Waugh had a "contrived" attitude? How about the Don? Apparently he was a complete bastard as a captain.
I’ve always enjoyed watching and respect Aus cricket. The quality of player is incredible. I don’t even mind the harder edge to guys like Waugh and Ponting and such. But at a time when you needed to soften the approach and steer it back from the potentially uglier side of the game, Paine is a genuinely solid soul to lead it.

I take it back.

It would sum up NZ cricket perfectly if we sneaked our way into the final and then got pumped by an innings and 200 runs.

Funnily enough, the reverse seems to apply to the Australian Cricket team.
