Just that really. With the new Coronavirus strain and the possibility of a fresh lockdown, do you guys think the tour is doomed?

I'd say so. If it does go ahead it'll be without the 10s of thousands of travelling fans you normally get.

There may just be home fans. If that was the case, maybe they would put it off for a year.

Maybe, would really mess up England and Irelands world Cup prep though.

I'm all for it personally.

Another possibility is that they could sacrifice the Lions for the 6 nations if there is no chance of getting crowds into the grounds in February/March/April.

I would really really hope not as the Lions Tour is second only to a world cup for me. I am sure the players wouldn't want that either.

It is hard to see how they can go ahead with either the Lions tour or the Olympics in 2021.

I would be gutted. Could they make it pay with just home fans?

It’s the fans that make the Lions tours what they are.

Delay the tour.

Was thinking about heading to Oz for the Ashes in November. I'd say the all day drinking at one of those tests would be hangoverific

I haven’t watched much cricket live. I did watch Glamorgan a year or so back in the 50/50.

And it was a glorious day - not a cloud in the sky. Beautiful.

And the beers kept on flowing!

Great day, will try and do it more often. The Ashes down under would be quite the experience - go for it!

My thoughts are that the Lions tours, World Cups, Cricket world cups, Olympics etc all go on hold and the countdown starts again when the bastard fucking fuck of as virus is stopped.

Quite right - they are apex tournaments and can stand over like in wartime

Well the Loins and the Boks could both come to NZ and play the series here. Could have warm ups against the Soup or Mitre 10 sides. Plenty of rugby fans would attend the matches. And the NZRU could get 20 % of the take for hosting the games, the other 80% split between the Loins and the Boks.

The ABs could play the Wobs and Pumas to keep thing interesting. With the Loins and Boks playing the curtain raiser game in double headers.

Brit and Bok fans can stay home because we don't want you bringing the pox here.

The Lions tour Rugby in SA should go ahead. Saru's meticulous planning of the tour a great advantage.

ZuluBoy wrote: Tue Dec 22, 2020 6:19 am The Rugby will go ahead. Saru's meticulous planning of the tour. The Currie Cup is steaming ahead due to excellent covid-19 sport protocols being followed. This is SA's first competition.
The next step is a plan that is presented by Saru for govt approval now to have lesser capacity crowds that follow covid-19 rules allowed for the CurrieCup semis and finals. So far was without crowds.
Time will tell for tavelling and B + I Lions supporters as a call will be made well ahead considering vaccinations
I believe the tour will go-ahead due to Saru's excellent management despite being critisized for not going to the RCs as Argentina who didn't had any other first competition option after hard lockdown.
I'm looking forward. Boks will be ready.

The adulterated Currie Cup going on now has no crowds and is being affected weekly by this virus with cancelled and postponed fixtures.

For this lions tour to proceed you will be expecting SARU and Lions and private entities/ fans to invest massively well in advance. How can you do that in good conscience?

Let's wait and see the outcome of the limited number of crowd that Saru requested from the playoffs onward.
a Call will be made well in advance in terms of uk travellers to allow for planning.

Us Brist will be vaccinated then so we can surely go. Though we might have to leave the Irish behind.

I've read elsewhere that for the Tokyo Games it's 2021 or bust. I don't understand why it can't be delayed again until 2022 but that's a couple takes from the Olympic world I read.

(And coincidentally, the 2022 World Cup is not even going to be in the summer for them to be able to delay another year.)

Hopefully I am being overly negative. There is the vaccine. The tour is a long time away and the Covid situation in South Africa does seem a little better than in the UK.

They could reschedule the tour for NZ or Australia. No plague, no covid-19, capacity crowds, what's not to like?

Personally I think the whole point of a Lions tour is that it's a foreign junket for rich English Rugby fans. If they can't travel en masse and without restrictions then there is zero point of going ahead with the tour. Sucks to be the SARU as they were banking their entire financial future on the Lions visit. Oh well, couldn't have happened to a nicer organisation

The Japanese position is that if the Games can't be held in 2021, then they will be cancelled.

the event is in the interest of the public of SA
application was brought by Saru and signed by the Trade and Industry minister and was gazetted. Didn't see any comments about any objection
Does that mean the government will do everything possible to support the tour?

No, it’s an Intellectual Property protection. The same declaration was made in 2009 and for the World Cup. It provided enhanced protection for brand owners against misuse of their trademarks.

Fairly sure this won't go ahead. Vaccinations will be peaking around then in Europe.

Question for the Aussies.

Is the Ashes going ahead in November 2021?

Why wouldn't it? England is no worse than India, and they're here now. Squad will just have quarantine for 2 weeks.

News of a new South African strain of the virus and stopping any travel to/from South Africa in the times today.

With the COVID situation at its worst in the Uk right now then it’s become increasingly unlikely that this will happen.

The only hope is that they have vaccinated the whole of the country but that seems unlikely.

Not sure. Lions money is seen as a bonus income stream, they don't play tests or a tour at home usually. But I think they usually plan for this bonus as part of expected income. However after COVID I would think they must have made adjustments to their expectations.

Won’t happen. Think I’ve been saying this since April. Not a chance tens of thousands of fans will be able to travel. Zero percent chance.

The only reschedule likely for South Africa is 2025 as there’s no from on the calendar. NZ or Australia won’t be ready to take the fans by mid-2021. Australia has enough expats that it could feasibly run a Lions series without the foreign hordes. This has been the only conceivable option since April in my opinion, but it we’ve all thought it best to keep dreaming about miracle scenarios.

Maybe, would really mess up England and Irelands world Cup prep though.

Sorry, are you saying the Scots will take up most of the places in the squad and there won’t be many English or Irish players traveling? That’s quite a prediction

The only way it would be in Australia was if Australia was hosting the Lions. But it’s probably too late for this now, which means there won’t be a Lions tour. South Africa may get a mulligan in 2025.
