Fatal shark attack in NZ

New Zealand Herald reporting a fatal shark
attack at Waihi Beach. 19 year-old Australian. To put things into perspective this is only the 13th known such fatality in NZ.
I grew up 10 minutes from this beach. Surfed, swam and gathered tuatua there 100s of times. Would sometimes see Bronze Whaler sharks in the surf chasing kahawai. The suspicion is that the shark involved is not a Bronze Whaler.
A rahui has been put in place.

Until your post, I’d not realised fatal shark attacks in NZ were so uncommon. What with the productivity of the seas around Aotearoa, I guess I’d expected there to be lots of sharks; and where there are lots of sharks, chances are one will have a crack at a swimmer or surfer eventually.
I see the lass was originally from West Oz, a state with 18 fatal attacks in the last 20 years*. Were I a Sandgroper, I’d be confining my beach activities anywhere on the globe to sun-baking and eating iceblocks.
*For some reason that escapes me I looked up a Wikipedia list of Strayan fatal sharks attacks a few days ago.

Eye witness reports seem to indicate she was swept out deep in a rip and was out beyond the surf break when the attack took place.
Very tragic.
I've been holidaying and swimming daily for the past three weeks just north in the Coromandel near Whitianga. Great white shark spotted today.
Talking to friends who are keen fishermen they reckon there are sharks everywhere. Bronze whalers very common off the beaches but speculation is that this attack was a great white.

I am starting to think that West Australians must be more tasty somehow. No keewee shark is going to snack on a keewee, but lob a West Australian into the surf and it is feeding frenzy.

It is very sad to hear of. But it's always a risk despite such incidents being uncommon. Still millions of sharks being slaughtered each year for the barbaric purposes of Chinese cuisine and medicine. It is screwing up several ecosystems already.
And no shame at all from the Chinese setting up a fleet to intercept various species on passage between the Galapagos and the Ecuadorian economic zone.

Lots of Bronze Whalers and a few Hammerheads have been hanging out at the Coromandel lately.
Apparently they are common just off shore.

I've got myself and others including kids going in the water at Whangaruru and Elliot Bay in the last week of January. What's the deal if you are threatened by sharks? Kick, shout and scream, or pretend you are not there?

I've been buzzed by two bronzies whilst freediving in NZ. Once in the corrmandel diving for crays and the other time in the bay of islands whilst spearfishing.
I've also had a young bronzie steal my catch off Avalon beach in Sydney.
In my n=3 study I've determined Bronzies are just sea labradors and are harmless.
Great Whites, Tigers and Bulls? No thanks.

I know you're having a bit of fun with it and they do migrate (sometimes across full oceans on occasion) - just not with regularity.
There's an East Coast–West Coast "hip hop" rivalry.

Correct.
However, regional populations are more DNA related with only small rates of crossover.

I was always told to remain calm if a big one came along. Must admit, the first encounter swimming with a 2m shark, I was out of the water and back on the boat before I could remember that.

KatiKati and I’m a bit taken with the region.
Yup, the only Ulster Scots settlement in the world I believe.
Although I left along time ago, my old man still has a Kiwifruit orchard near the town and I do visit when I can.

Yeah that is just off Matarangi beach where I have spent the past three weeks swimming almost daily.
Tbf they have been publishing a story like that every January for years now. My sisters first reaction was "They must publish the same photo every year." The bronze whalers seem completely disinterested in people and therefore harmless ... but you never know?

Tuatua are a shell fish/clam, Kahawai are fish, fast swimming great fun to catch on light gear, and a Rahui is a ban on collecting certain resources...like tuatua in a certain area for a certain period of time

A rahui is also often imposed after a tragedy. For example if there is a drowning in a river there will often be a rahui (temporary ban) placed on recreational activities in that section of the river. It's out of respect for the deceased.
