Sri Lanka have declined terribly over the past decade. They would come dead last in the Sheffield Shield. It's a joke that they have test match status.

Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
This could be a short series thread. Our Sri Lankan members are notoriously quiet and the matches won’t go the distance.

Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
Why would they give a shit? Team morale is at an all time low. They basically go from series to series knowing that they will get hammered. As players, their sole focus is picking up a T20 contract somewhere. Reading an interview with Murali today and he said the team is now run by the Sri Lankan govt, and that's why all the recent greats of SL cricket like himself, Sangakara, Jayasuria etc have nothing to do with the team.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 10:05 am Bess gets a Michelle and Sri Lanka get the lowest total at Galle by almost 50 runs. I am pretty sure that the ICC prohibits governments from directly intervening - penalty results in loss of test statusAli's Choice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 10:08 amWhy would they give a shit? Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
Seriously good day for England - Bess will never get an easier fifor - way below his best but the Sri Lankans were hapless.
Great chance for them to push on tomorrow and build a match winning lead.
Can't quite understand why they went in with 3 seamers though - could have played another spinner or another bat rather than carry a seam bolwing passenger. We could have had our best wicket keeper playing who was the man of the series last time we went there. Very odd selections but they seem to have got away with it.

Wow there's declined and simply not up to test levelAli's Choice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:45 am Sri Lanka have declined terribly over the past decade. They would come dead last in the Sheffield Shield. It's a joke that they have test match status.

Didn't watch any of the game but according to reports the English spinner was pretty forgettable but still managed to bag a five for.
Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
Yeah - he was. Leach bowled the better, by far. Happens like that sometimes. My best figures (bowling offies) have rarely come from my best bowling performances. Having said that, Bess looked very rusty and could find a rhythm at all - his lengths were all over the place. He got one with an absolutely filthy long hop.Salient wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 11:02 pmWow there's declined and simply not up to test levelAli's Choice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:45 am Sri Lanka have declined terribly over the past decade. Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
England have some excellent batting talent coming through in the test side. Crawley, Lawrence and Pope all look high class players, they just lack experience - add them to Stokes and Root and you've got the makings of quality batting line up - and some strong competition for places.
Good to see Root building another Daddy ton - I don't think the SL spinners really tested him that much but he's a brilliant player of spin. Despite just 12 boundaries he still managed to rattle along at a strike rate of (aptly) 66.
Just hope the weather doesn't prevent us from completing the win.

Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
Great start to the second innings from Sri Lanka. If they bat really well could be a tricky final day for England. Still probably England win or rain affected draw.
Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
Our spinners will have to up their game a fair bit I reckon. Playing 3 seamers is looking to be a really poor decision.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 9:59 am Great start to the second innings from Sri Lanka. Our batting tailed of rather disappointingly - thank God for Root.

Anything above 150 will be a struggle.
A lead of 42 with 8 down now.

74 to win. Surely England can't lose from here?

Re: Sri Lanka v England test series
I think we'll have to play much better in the 2nd test - we can't rely on SL chucking it away again like they did in the 1st innings.
Nonetheless - that was a pretty good performance considering the lack of any meaningful practice before the game. Hopefully our spinners will find it easier to get into a rhythm now. Need our openers to step up as well - with no Stokes beefing up the middle order, we can't afford to be 20/2 every time.
Can't see why we need 3 pace bowlers playing in SL. Extra bat or extra spinner should be strongly considered.

I'd be surprised to see Wood in the team for next test, and wonder if they'll rest other quicks given short turnaround. Assume Moeen's no longer having to ring the plague bell and will return, gives a bit more bat and spin.ovalball wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 4:22 pm I think we'll have to play much better in the 2nd test - we can't rely on SL chucking it away again like they did in the 1st innings.
