Nice to see Ishant bowling again after he missed India's tour of Australia.

How do you tell who is on strike with the C4 graphics?

From a NZ perspective, I suppose I should support India in this series. Would much rather NZ played India at Lords.

Without wanting to tempt fate, that's a hell of a stablising innings from Root and Sibley. And an impressive run rate until the new ball came out.

Some of these Indian fielders do not look very mobile when chasing the ball.

Root hits a six and immediately collapses with cramp.

If you look carefully theres a little mark to the left of the batsman on strike - the batsman not on starike has a solid vertical blue line next to him.

That was a shame - just lost his concentration with only a few deliveries left in the day. Great effort from Sibley though and a pretty good day for England. Don't think I've ever seen Root play better.

Lot of work left to do. They really have to get 500+ on this pitch - otherwise they could see India go past them and put us under pressure in our second innings. We scored 470 odd here before, and still lost.

Never got to see what you were talking about yesterday as play was over by the time you posted your reply. Someone must have had a word as it's very obvious today who is on strike.

Looks like England will put up a good first innings score of 500+. How will England's bowlers fare on the pitch?

555/8 at the close. Good day for England - shame we had that little collapse which meant we couldn't accelerate over the last 10/15 overs - pitch still looks benign but at east we've had the best of it and, if it's going to do anything, it might start playing some tricks over the next day or two.

Looks like a draw though.

Root was simply brilliant - what a 2021 he's having so far.

Way above my most optimistic hopes before the test started.

I hope Root has finally found a way to convert his 50s into the number of hundreds his talent deserves - he was (and still is) in real danger of only having a "good" test career, when he could (should) really be in the conversation as one of England's best ever batsmen.

Hopefully the pitch will completely fall apart now. More likely though is India hold on for a comfortable draw - but I would have snatched your hand off for that a couple of days ago.

Why no declaration? Is there some byzantine rule about the roller or is it the AB principle of aqueezing the oppo out of the game?

I guess they didn't score fast enough. I was surprised they weren't trying to smash it around in the last half hour. Presumably they will declare overnight.

Heavy roller in the morning and then get bowled out.
