Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
Re: Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
Caught the last half hour.....tense game of moments, and eventually 15 beat 14....narrowly.
Looked at POM's thing on youtube later.........2-3 match penalty if he has prior form. Enthusiastic clean out action intended, but but was reckless and lacked judgment......with the maul/ruck mostly collapsed the only things sticking up were heads.

Yeah, you're diving in with forearm out at speed. Just watched the clip.
Out for the 6N - deliberate attack to the head to a player in the ruck - 6 weeks.
Reduced to 3 weeks if he has a good record or took a knee for BLM.

BTW - I’m basing this off Scott Ba last year which (1) wasn’t as bad and (2) he admitted guilt and displayed remorse.

Ireland better without him anyway.
He has played his last game for Ireland.

Pete’s our of contract. Negotiating a two year deal apparently. I doubt his agent will sleep much tonight.

That's such a shite response.
'He didn't do it on purpose' - he ran into that static ruck pretty purposeful... (not say saying he intended to hit a guy fully in the head, but he obviously wanted to 'impose himself physically', with all the risks involved - especially as he did the same thing a few months ago).
'Poor Pete is hurting'. What about the prone guy he hit in the head?!

Ease up. Short of publicly slitting his wrists there's not much he can do at this stage. Are they even allowed talk to the media before the citing commission?
Disclaimer: he was a fkin moron and it cost us the game. Doesn't mean the guy ain't feeling like dogshit about it.

Yup. I'd like to hope he apologised to Williams as well as the lads, this championship was wide open after Twickenham.

I'm sure POM's absolutely gutted about his red card. But there's really nobody or nothing else to blame, no dipping player, no bounce of the ball, no 'last-ditch effort trying to prevent a try'lemonhead wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 10:56 am Ease up. I don't mind Farrell defending him to some extend, but it needs a bit of reality in there. 'Obviously it was a bad and dangerous tackle, which Pete regrets and he's very sorry to let the team down.'
Small differences in tone/text perhaps, but that interview was just very defensive: 'Pete is hurting, and the ref didn't penalise the Welsh - poor us'

I'm no huge fan of Barnes, but he was on the wrong side to see the head contact. Perhaps he should have called a check, but it's what the TMO is there for.Magpie26 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:12 pmOddly enough the only person disagreeing with this was Barnes himself.......TheFrog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:57 pm Here is a transcript from Trump inciting the crowd to take over the Capitol. Sorry, of the TMO exchange with Barmes:
His left arm was almost tucked in a chicken wing action and he's hit him in the head, hasn't he? Let's deal with the facts, first of all.
"It's definitely foul play. He's come from a distance at high speed and has hit someone in the head. That's the facts. He's not in control. It's high danger. That's the facts. Does anyone disagree with that? So the sanction is, red card.
Another Sgt Shultz moment by Barnes........I see nothing.....nothing....

From the coach
“He has done a lot of good things for us in the past and I’m sure he’ll do the same for us in the future.”
Nice support for his player

Certainly couldn't have hurt. The bit about the head on head collision would've been a separate question surely.

Be a hard job to damage a brain that small
Re: Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
Yes it was careless but rugby fans are dreamin' if they think something similar won't happen to one of their own guys in the very near future.
Way too many red cards spoiling contests lately.

I don't think it was deliberate. He had his head and was on autopilot. Not sure if that's much of a defence though!

POM has been very lucky not to be sent off for this time and time again.
He has history of this, he never learns and needs to retire.
No Lions tour for him now, not that he would have gone anyway

Players just need to learn that they can't do this stuff any more. This concussion court case is only going to result in tightening the rules even further.
There was a letter in the Sunday Times yesterday saying school kids shouldn't be tackling in rugby, so who knows where it is all going.

Re: Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
Indeed.
World Rugby should introduce a handicap system to make matches closer.
NZ/Eng/SA/ Fr allowed 12 players on at any one time
Sco/Aus 13 Players
Ire 14 players (seems to work well)
Italy 15
Wales 17+
Worth a try this year anyway.
Re: Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
It's a shame, cos Eddy linguist Butler loves pronouncing his surname
Re: Peter "Chicken Wing" O'Mahoney
Pretty much. Everyone up in arms about wrapping blah this shoulder charge blah blah that.
If you looked at it I'm sure you'd find pretty much every other ruck in the match was hit by a player in the same way, they just didn't hit an opposition player in the head by mistake.
It's a red card by the current rules and obviously getting hit in the head isn't terribly healthy to be on the receiving end of but it's basically amounting to a lottery on whether you are unlucky enough for someone to fall over while you are going in to clear out and how bad it looks on slow motion.
It's also perfectly fine to throw your shoulder into a tackling players head when you are attacking and have the ball.

The problem with the "players must learn" brigade, is that with the speed of the game and the fact it is a contact sport, this "stuff" can and does happen, and often accidentally.
Notwithstanding the fact O'Mahony's was a bad one.

The real issue is that POM is known for this sort of thuggery, hence he is known as the ruck exocet.jdogscoop wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:41 amAnxious mums have been writing those letters for decades, so I wouldn't worry too much about those.not_english wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:38 am Players just need to learn that they can't do this stuff any more. I sense a lack of piety and righteous indignation from us Welsh because the reason Sanjay missed the Ireland game was for an equally reckless clearout, although head on head in his case.
