Jeff's All New and Grateful Wales Ratings v Ireland

Post by Jeff the Bear »

Everyone gets an extra 1 point taken off for looking so bad against 14 men.

15. Leigh Halfpenny – Missed a sitter. Was generally OK under the high ball. Fairly average otherwise. 4/10

14. Louis Rees-Zammit – Well taken try, and didn’t look out of place on an international field. 5/10

13. George North – A well taken try as well, but it was gifted to him, and although he didn’t embarrass himself, was overshadowed by some distance by the Irish centres. 5/10

12. Nick Tomkins – Played most of the game, so I’ll go with him. Decent enough. Made the odd yard here and there, and made his tackles, but nothing spectacular. 4/10

11. Hallam Amos – There’s a reason Amos is a utility back, as he’s just not good enough to nail down one position. 3/10

10. Dan Biggar – Barely noticed he was there. The stats says he passed pretty much everything. Sounds about right. 4/10

9. Tomos Williams – Will be a blow if he’s properly injured. Looked very good when we finally had some ball. Also put in some standout tackles for a 9. 5/10

8. Taulupe Faletau – Didn’t pull up any trees, but did some solid work in defence. 6/10

7. Justin Tipuric – Worked his bollocks off in defence. Managed 29 tackles, a fair few of which were covering backs in the outside channels. Carried and linked well as well. 7/10

6. Josh Navidi – First proper game back in a while, and I think it told in the end. Couldn’t effect any of his trademark standout tackles or turnovers. However, still managed 20 tackles. 6/10

5. Alun Wyn Jones – Massive effort from the 35 year old. Young guns would be happy with 25 tackles, and double-digit metres made ball in hand. On that performance, he’d still do a job for the Lions. 7/10

4. Adam Beard – Was recalled after some outstanding displays for the Ospreys, but didn’t really have any impact on the game. 4/10

3. Tomos Francis – Just to drive home how poor the MOTM award was, fellow prop of the eventual winner managed a near unheard of 19 tackles for a fatty, and yet he was still fairly average. Locked out the scrum though. 5/10

2. Ken Owens – What a difference a competent hooker makes. Has been sorely missed, and he worked hard across the park in both the tight and the loose. 5/10

1. Wyn Jones – Worst MOTM in history. Nuff said. 4/10

Team Average: 4.9/10

Tactics Talk
We actually got to see some attacking tactics this game, which was something. Even before the card, the rapid coast-to-coast beat-the-defence-around-the-corner gambit was bringing results. The only issue being that our passive defence couldn’t turn over the ball, so we barely saw much of it.

Games like this are a tough one to gauge as, yes, Ireland did step it up and make it very hard for Wales, but you could also ague that the 40 minutes high intensity work the Irish pack put in after the card was always doomed to fail and that Wales just hanging around was all the tactics they needed. Either way, even against an Ireland side that is all about territory and grinding possession play, you’d expect a decent outfit to put 14 men to the sword…and we clearly are not a decent outfit.

Hard lines for Ireland, who on balance, probably should have won…so it goes without saying that if we play that passively against a fired up Scots team next week, we’ll lose handily.

Amos’s kick out on the full after a relieving turnover made me utter a 4 lettered oath.

Dont see how Tomos Williams was a 9.5 either. Dithered at the base of rucks too many times

I'm definitely going to have to watch the game again just to see if I missed something particularly obvious. I thought he was decent, but nothing that elevated him above average.

1/2p was gash in attack, gave away 2pens on about 2 mins. He missed easy kicks and will not be in the squad come Sanjays return same for Amos when Adams is fit.

Our line out ffs lead to and Irish try stopped our attack dead at times.
Minus another point for Sherrif, that said he is head and shoulders the best 2 in Wales.

We stole a win today and an asterix goes against the score.

The things is though, A Farrell coached 'seek contact or kick it away' Ireland isn't the team that's going to expose North at OC. The Frogs will target him mercilessly. I'd expect the Scots to put in some moves that try to isolate him in defence next week as well.

I agree. He wasn't MOTM, but that was his best game in a Welsh Jersey.

Toby was really off the pace, but Tipuric was everywhere in attack and defence.

Alun-Wyn was bloody excellent. Best lock on the park.

Amos was toilet, as expected. Is he really the best we've got?

to me the pressure to win was huge,Ireland went for it Wales looked lacklustre but scored some nice tries.
A win will do for now but they will not be given such leeway next week.

Is this the correct thread to fcuking annihilate Gareth Davies’s decision to kick the ball away with 10 seconds to go?

I actually couldn’t believe. Still can’t.

Yeah. If we'd have lost, it would have gone up there with Gareth Coppers' equally shit effort when we should have won out in Oz way back when.

I can only assume he thought there was no one back there, or that he was aiming for the corner and just made a shit kick. Wrong decision either way mind. Tomos is clearly out No.1 No.9 at the moment. He's just got to stop getting injured.

He's an absolutely bang average player, who brings nothing to the team.

I'd prefer players who take risks over mediocrity.

Can a Welsh person please explain all this "Wyn" stuff?

Is it a surname or a Christian name?

Is Alun Wyn Jones related or unrelated to Wyn Jones?

And why do you only have about five surnames in the entire gene pool?

Baffling.
