Post by Ogre »

We let honky's lead the haka.

Not Jordie though, that would mean he was stinking up the right wing again.

As a Saffer, my favourite was the Buck Shelford led Kamate. My favourite All Black. Just kinda stood there and delivered a ferocious and focused challenge.

Don't understand the cultural aspect that much, but always enjoyed watching a imposing figure like Tana lead. Can't remember seeing a prop or lock lead it. Maybe Craig Dowd or am I misremembering.

Can a player who’s on the bench lead the Haka? I’m sure there’ll be an example of it being done before.

TJ Perenara has lead the haka a lot in the past despite being on the bench. I think there have been previous players too but can't think of them off the top of my head.

My go to haka to watch on youtube is the Timatanga done by NZ Maori vs Lions in 2005. Pretty sure Weepu led it. Just an awesome one.

Akira Ioane.

I big tough loose forward ala Buck. No more wimpy little halfbacks allowed.

What are the rules?

I genuinely thought you had to have a Maori do the ‘lead’ part.

It's all about Mana. Tana was the first non-Maori. I think McCaw had the odd crack and Read.

Did Kevin Mealamu lead the haka on occasion too?

Thanks

The lead part is always fantastic, so they’ve obviously chosen well, each time.

My favourite haka? Is when the ABs are fired up after they’ve lost the first test of a series. Those ones are always spine-tingling.
Like you took your best shot at Jake the Muss, or Godzilla - and then he turns slowly around to face you. Gulp.

McCaw & Read lead Hakas were the triangle formation era Haka no, certainly all Reads were. The Haka died with Piri, it does nothing for me in its current incarnation.

Steve McDowall led it a couple of times but that's a while back now.

Carl Hayman led it at least once IIRC.
