All the rest the commentators go OOOH HE HAD THE DISTANCE BUT HE'S JUST PUSHED IT WIDE AND THE WALLABIES GO INTO THE HALF DOWN 10!

When he played flyhalf those games ended with Paisami taking over and putting himself in at first receiver because Hodge couldn't get anything done. He spent most of those games lurking in the backline studiously staying out of the way and hoping if he was a good boy they'd let him get involved. He was appalling for the Rebels before he got injured, his skills were somehow regressing from an already very low base. Don't know who was worse between him and To'omua, but they both made Lewis Holland look like an absolute god.

Sick that he got a couple of intercepts? I guess that makes up for all of the times he rushes out of the line to be a hero and hangs everyone else out to dry? I genuinely don't understand the appeal. Does he give the everyman hope that he could make it? Are we not over watching guys like him, wouldn't it be more fun to watch someone good?

He’s the guy we want to do well, because he is who we might have been. He’s the guy that makes it because he persevered. He is Rudy. He is Dennis Quaid. He is Eddie the Eagle.

I think people think he's less athletic than he is, because on the field he looks like Michael Rapaport doing a Robert Patrick impression.

Very interesting commentary about Valetini this evening. All the Aussie commentators are talking him up like he's the new Jesus. But two very telling points should be emphasised. The Aussies all talked about his attack work. This was epitomised by the nice young lady at the end, who was talking up his impact - in attack. I guess you don't mention defence when his team just got flogged.

The only talking head that really mentioned defence was Mehrtens, before the game, who made the observation that Valetini in the last 2 weeks has been working harder in defence and really getting off the line. This is a fair comment, because he has, and he put in a good shift early on in this game. But getting back to the end of the game, though .... the Brumbies got BP hammered in the end. I was looking for where he was in defence on the last couple of tries, and he wasn't in picture.

I know the ponies' guy has been annointed wallaby assist coach, but can we possibly get Thorn into to camp to sort out Valetini's head space so he stays acute for 80 minutes? IF Lurch can manage that, I'd be all for selecting him.

Valetini is great in defence. He literally picks people up and walks backwards with them. In fact, in the past season I was critical of him for not being a presence enough with ball in hand, although undoubtedly a beast smashing rucks and in tackles. Thankfully he's addressed that in spades this year with his big runs and he's going to walk into the Wallaby starting side.

He might have run out of a bit of steam at the end of this game, I dunno. Maybe that's an issue. But you don't have to worry about his defence. He's a monster in the tackle.

I'm sold that

Valetini
Hooper
Wilson

is the best backrow we have available at the moment. Earlier in the year I had McReight but he's been a bit disappointing plus he doesn't seeem to be very physical. We need blokes with mongrel at test level.

To be fair, Valetini was only ranked a lowly 4th in Super Rugby Au, behind Tizzano, McReight and Koteka, for tackles won...

Factoring in how many of those were dominant tackles... and his impact in attack, and workrate off the ball...

He's no Henry Stowers.

The brumbies got a BP flogging. Please tell me where he was, and who he was tackling, on the last two oppo tries. By all means, take your time, and post videos. So yeah, I do have to worry about his defence.

I think there can be no bigger compliment towards Valetini, in that his on field presence is so mammoth that ol' Sluggy expects him to cover the entire width of the field in defence, and that any breach within those 70m is a poor reflection of his defensive effort...

Imagine being that good.

Potentially... the white Eales?

It's not rugby loig slimmy. #6 in real rugby has to have situational awareness and anticipation in defensive positioning, not just be another "centre". He was going OK in the first half of tonight's game, but his head dropped, and he lost focus in the second. I'm all for getting Lurch Thorn in there to sought out his mental application. At the moment, though, do you think the wallabies can carry him switching off in defence?

They’ve got him in the wrong role. He’s the joker. Stan should give him a couple of beers before the game and tell him to pretend he’s at a bar trying to impress some girls.

Untie his hands. Let him go free.

You know, I fully expect that after the Wallabies lose against NZ 5-blot in this year's further expanded Bledisloe, after Ritchie Mo'uaga scores 8 tries down the blind off set piece scrum moves, Slimmy, towny, Zakar et al will all be in here telling me that valetini is the best #6 of all time, and there is nothing wrong with his defence.

Towny will likely tell me I'm a racist for doubting the lad's technique and mental application (he's already pulled that card), Slimmy will be quoting stats about hit up in the centres (rugba loig style), and Zakar will be asking who from the Waratahs would have been better. Which is the wrong question, of course.

So the Wallaby team is being named on Sunday. Will there be any bolters or surprise selections?

Do people think the Australian teams' likely 2-23 record against NZ teams in TT Super Rugby will impact on player's confidence leading up to the Bledisloe series?
