Modern TV is rubbish

Post by Mick Mannock »

I cannot imagine anything approaching the quality of The Dick Calvert Show being made today.

I cannot imagine an audience comprehending these two either

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEPtyb9OHP8

This is just one example of the outstanding quality of that show.

If you haven't already, check out his Vietnam and Watergate anthologies.

You could spend hours going down a Dick Cavett youtube rabbit hole.

Yes, he is my favourite, followed by Michael Parkinson. Calvert is of Welsh heritage. His grandfather came from my county - Carmarthenshire, as he states just here in this wonderful interview with Richard Burton.

Just rewind a few minutes and you'll hear Burton (Jenkins was his actual surname of course) narrate a story of his drunk miner father. Great stuff.

Calvert is still alive too. Aged 84.

Dick Cavett was outstanding, though to be fair he was surrounded by an appalling sea of absolute trash.

I've always liked this one: Cavett mediates between two great saurian beasts:

I find it difficult to watch TV for long when I can just flick over to youtube or rumble and search directly for what I'm interested in, and the algorithm is particularly helpful in that respect.

Line of Duty, top TV detective series on the BBC. Highest TV drama viewing figures for over a decade and quoted by both Boris and Keir Starmer in PMQs on Wednesday, unmissable!

Define "Modern TV".

If you are talking about the puerile, reality TV shit served up on the commercial networks night after fvcking night then I couldn't agree more.

If you are talking about the huge volume of excellent series available for a modest fee on the streaming networks at your leisure then I would suggest the viewing has never been better.

Why can't you just point out something is good without turning it into a culture war every time?

Anyway, actual Modern TV is great in many parts, modern talkshows aren't as good as back in the day. But then again there are other mediums that make up for that a bit, which is reflective of the modern world of entertainment and media.

Also, I've always thought Powell looked strange but what's up with his accent?

He only mentioned that that conversation wouldn't take place on mainstream TV today - which he is right. Nothing about the culture war. Just as William Buckley's interviews wouldn't make it on TV now.

My favourite minds today are Sam Harris, Naval Ravikant, Douglass Murray, Eric and Brett Weinstein et al. You don't see those guys on long form conversations on TV.

He was 100% culture warring.

Anyway, you don't think Buckley could find somewhere to be interviewed on TV? Sure.

As for your favourite minds, I specifically said there are other outlets for that type of stuff in the part of my post you chose not to quote. The media and entertainment landscape is a completely different beast these days.

I read somewhere the new Godzillia/Kong made 200 million. Very good in a pandemic with global lockdowns in the western world. Cinema will likely bounce back over time to at least a decent level.

 Even better considering. Obviously the billion plus releases aren't coming back very soon, but those numbers suggest very much to me that Cinema isn't dead or dying as predicted even if it never quite bounces back to pre-pandemic levels. I'm pleased Cinema is likely to survive.

Though I suspect releases will come to various streaming services much sooner from Cinema releases and perhaps plenty of overlap too. Whether that will last after Cinema makes it's bounce back is another matter.
