Fauci: Lockdowns are ineffective. Aus & NZ are wasting their time.

Fauci issues Australia a sobering reality check

America’s top COVID adviser says Australia cannot rely on vaccines and border controls to protect its population, warning no country is safe while the virus is allowed to spread beyond its borders.

Dr Anthony Fauci issued the sobering reality check during the University of NSW’s inaugural David Cooper Lecture this week as the US administered a record 4.6 million vaccines in a single day and Australia’s vaccination rollout continues to stumble.

As a physician with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fauci has served American public health in various capacities for more than 50 years, and has been an advisor to every U.S. president since Ronald Reagan.[1] He became director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in 1984 and has made contributions to HIV/AIDS research and other immunodeficiency diseases, both as a scientist and as the head of the NIAID.[2] From 1983 to 2002, Fauci was one of the world's most frequently-cited scientists across all scientific journals.[2] In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Fauci the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, for his work on the AIDS relief program PEPFAR.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci was one of the lead members of President Donald Trump’s White House Coronavirus Task Force. In the early stages of the pandemic, The New Yorker and The New York Times described Fauci as one of the most trusted medical figures in the United States.[3][4][1][5] Fauci was appointed as Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden in 2021.[6][7]
What would he know about it?

Anthony Fauci has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on: Peter Navarro
When you ask me whether I listen to his advice, my answer is only with skepticism and caution: Opposing view
Peter Navarro | Opinion contributor
Tuesday evening online and Wednesday morning in print, the Editorial Board published an Our View editorial that praised Dr. Anthony Fauci as a “national treasure” and sharply criticized recent White House efforts to undermine or sideline him.

As is our longstanding tradition, to give our readers another point of view, we reached out to White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who has been critical of Fauci. Navarro provided a response that was published as an Opposing View paired with our editorial. We dealt directly with Navarro and do not know whether he spoke to anyone else at the White House about his statement.

Navarro’s response echoed comments made to other news outlets in recent days. We felt it was newsworthy because it expanded on those comments, put an on-the-record name to the attacks on Fauci, and contradicted White House denials of an anti-Fauci campaign.

However, several of Navarro’s criticisms of Fauci — on the China travel restrictions, the risk from the coronavirus and falling mortality rates — were misleading or lacked context. As such, Navarro’s op-ed did not meet USA TODAY’s fact-checking standards.

— Bill Sternberg, USA TODAY editorial page editor

Dr. Anthony Fauci has a good bedside manner with the public, but he has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on.

In late January, when I was making the case on behalf of the president to take down the flights from China, Fauci fought against the president’s courageous decision — which might well have saved hundreds of thousands of American lives.

When I warned in late January in a memo of a possibly deadly pandemic, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was telling the news media not to worry.

TODAY'S NEWS: Attacks on Fauci reflect Trump's problem with high-profile adviser

When I was working feverishly on behalf of the president in February to help engineer the fastest industrial mobilization of the health care sector in our history, Fauci was still telling the public the China virus was low risk.

When we were building new mask capacity in record time, Fauci was flip-flopping on the use of masks.

And when Fauci was telling the White House Coronavirus Task Force that there was only anecdotal evidence in support of hydroxychloroquine to fight the virus, I confronted him with scientific studies providing evidence of safety and efficacy. A recent Detroit hospital study showed a 50% reduction in the mortality rate when the medicine is used in early treatment.

Now Fauci says a falling mortality rate doesn’t matter when it is the single most important statistic to help guide the pace of our economic reopening. The lower the mortality rate, the faster and more we can open.

So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr. Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution.

Peter Navarro, an assistant to the president, is the director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy. (Parts of this statement were shared with other news organizations. The Food and Drug Administration has revoked its approval for treating COVID-19 with hydroxychloroquine.)

Oz and NZ ahve had exceptional outcomes from their responses to COVID. The facts are the facts.

Of course Fauci has been wrong about some things. That's the nature of dealing with a novel virus at the same time as constantly trying to not embarass your buffoon of a boss.

The fact remains that Fauci is close the most qualified person on the planet to make comment.

I have no idea what Peter Navarro's qualifications are, or even who he is, but he sounds like a bit of an arrogant dick tbh.

Academically no one is doubting his qualifications for such a job. Qualifications to be in the position doesn't make his advice any better when he's actually there. In the actual world he has been found wanting. His COVID advice says he isn't fit for purpose and that is what matters.

His advice is fine. He was scrambling to prevent a national catostrophe with an unknown pathogen and little to no solid science to guide him, while balancing the demands and policies of an absolute moron of a boss and also deflecting critisism from every single angle from the likes of your nitwit opinion piece journo.

He's done okay considering.

I thought it was well known that Fauci has contradicted himself multiple times throughout the pandemic. It seems a little odd that he's lauded so much. Lately he's been saying that people who have been vaccinated need to stay indoors - I must admit I've not bothered to find out why he says this, other than listening to him justify it with generalisations about the spread of the virus, but am I wrong in thinking that vaccinated people are very low risk as vectors of transmission? I mean the CDC says there are no reasons for them to quarantine, for example.

i think there is a time before the vaccines take effect.

I had a novavax injection last week, and disappointed to find no antibodies at all today in a failed lateral flow antibody test kit.

Hasn't one of them been suspended on the basis of 6 or 7 cases of blood clots that may or may not have been related to the vaccine, out of a total of 4 or 5 million does given? That would be difficult to pick up in normal trials.

J&J, after six cases out of 6.8m doses, around one in a million. It is not very common.

Are we trying to rewrite history here? Fauci was on tv on a daily basis answering questions on the pandemic. He clearly advocated for lockdown and wearing masks. He updated his response as more information were available. He's also right that global control is the only way to protect ourselves in the long-term. Australia is safe but it's closed the borders.

No, we're mostly joking at the expense of the OP. Especially as Dr Fauci hasn't in fact said lockdowns are ineffective or that Aus and NZ are wasting their time.

And yes, he's right to say we need to get it under control globally to be truly safe.

Isn't what this learned fellow saying a bit contradictory, he says
Australia cannot rely on vaccines and border controls to protect its population, warning no country is safe while the virus is allowed to spread beyond its borders.
yet the US is vaccinating like crazy to stop the spread of the virus, so if Aus and NZ both vaccinate and control the borders, how are we then going to be any different to the rest of the world, well apart from the fact that we have full stadiums, can go for a pint and a meal after, what else are we supposed to be doing?
I think our various health sectors are aware that until the whole population is vaccinated, we are at risk

He never said masks were ineffective. His early comments about people not wearing masks.....

Damn it, I will let the man himself explain it.

Those clips are months after the period I'm talking about. I do realise he respectively changed his tune.
His advice changed as more information and data became available, as it should.
He always knew that masks were effective. We've known that for decades. It's why doctors, uumm, wear masks.

Did you listen to his explanation? One of the main reasons for his earlier comments was that a shortage of masks would mean that if the general population all decided to wear them, there would not be sufficient for medical staff. A perfectly valid position to take IMHO.

I am aware that that was the reason - that's not what was explained at the time though. Lying with good intentions is still lying.

The reason why it is significant is that when he changed his tune so say masks are now effective, enough people had been programmed to believe they wearn't. People don't suddenly change their minds. The messaging needed to be clear and consistent from the start:

"Masks are effective but we don't have enough for our frontline medical staff at the moment. Please refrain from using them and instead stay home and social distance"

Just throwing out a bit of precious-bait.
It's sad that you've been reduced to trolling your own former countrymen.
Dumb arse gonna dumb arse.

The keyboard mashing personification of Dunning-Kruger

Dunning-Kruger has been debunked. If you were smart, you would know that.
Sounds pretty categorical there chief. Do tell.

I don't mind that we were wrong. I hope we keep being wrong with the results we have obtained.

Our aim was to buy time until treatments and vaccines could be established - I cannot see how that can be called wrong

Yeah, reality is currently making our response look awesome regardless of whatever the theory is meant to say.
