Scott Fardy goooooooooooooone

Post by Akkerman »

Leinster have confirmed that former Wallaby Scott Fardy will retire from rugby at the end of the current season.

Capped 39 times by Australia, Fardy has won 76 caps for Leinster Rugby since joining in 2017 and he has to date won a Heineken Champions Cup and four Guinness PRO14 titles during his time at Leinster.

The 36-year-old told leinsterrugby.ie the veteran Australian forward said, “I’ve loved every minute of this adventure, not only the last few years with Leinster but all of it and of course there is still a lot of rugby to be played this season. We are still on a high after the weekend and we’ve a massive few weeks ahead and that is our focus right now.

“We’ve a week off at the moment and then we’ll begin our build up with a game against Munster Rugby and then the massive challenge of facing La Rochelle away in France.

“There will be time to sit back, reflect and to thank the clubs and the people that have played a part in my playing career when the season is done and maybe even in person.

“It’s been a hard year for everyone in society and playing without our fans has been difficult but hopefully off the back of Monday’s news, I might be able to say thank you and goodbye at the RDS in front of our supporters which would be special.

“Until then all my energy and focus is on finishing the season strongly with Leinster.”

Leinster Rugby Head Coach Leo Cullen said, “Scott Fardy leaves a formidable legacy behind him at the club. He has been a key figure in the team’s recent success and has been an invaluable member of the leadership group during his time here.

“Fards is a great competitor on the field but he also brings great enjoyment and fun to the entire squad throughout our lengthy season when the team is constantly changing, particularly with international players away and younger players stepping up in their absence.

“I’m sure lots of Leinster supporters will remember his performance in Bilbao when he was still straining every last fibre deep into injury time to try to block down the late Remi Tales drop-goal attempt. But there have been so many other moments where he has shown a real physical edge and winning mentality across a brilliant four years.

“We wish Scott, Penelope and their two boys, August and Walker, all the very best with their return home safe in the knowledge that they have friends here for life at Leinster.

“We very much hope to see them back at sometime in the future at a packed RDS Arena so that the Leinster faithful can show their appreciation and give them a proper blue wave good-bye.”

Farking legend. Under utilised and appreciated by Australian rugby but this man has been a beast everywhere he has played.

Had great success at Leinster and was a brilliant import for the province. Felt he didn’t have the international career he could have had but not bad all the same.

Probably in the top 5 all time Leinster overseas signings.

Cheers Fards. Proper sort. Could melt a ruck like few others. Wish him luck

The knock on him here, was that he didn’t carry the ball that much.

Did he do a bit more of that at Leinster?

carried a bit but wasn't his primary role.. played mostly 2nd row.

Top 5 foreign import for Leinster, maybe top 3.

Thanks. He did all the tough stuff really well. Very athletic too, played State basketball as a junior

Not to mention his heroic deeds during the Fukushima disaster

Well done Scott.

Not a whole ton. Mainly your standard carry-up off multiphase. He was good in the goal line carries. He had very good hands tho, always looking for the tip-on pass when he was in a pod or could link with a back outside

Came over and gave me a bollocking for abusing the ref at a local game a couple of years ago.

He's down for 10 tries in his 76 games for Leinster, and he didn't score all of those hanging out on the wing. He was never our primary carrier, but we didn't need him to be; he was always right in behind the guy who was, securing the ball. Good hands, good rugby brain, excellent work rate. Everything we could've wanted from him, really.

Not necessarily tight grunt work, had plenty of others in the pack able for that. He'd hold his width up and give a hard carry up the sidelines on phase ball, well able to draw and pass/offload from contact.
Having skillful tight 5 players is so important with the relentless phase play that Leinster have used for years. Not that others can't, but Fardy's been excellent.
And he's a hard as nails prick and loves annoying the opposition. Great fun to watch.

The likes of Ryan, Baird, Dunne, Molony and even Toner will have learned so much from him over the last 4 years.
I remember the game against Exeter in Lansdowne road in December 2017 when Exeter were leading and seemed to be in the driving seat. Fardy was instrumental in turning the tide. Had an incredible game covering nearly every blade of grass and lifted the whole pack.
Not as flash and dynamic carrying the ball as another certain famous Australian import but was a lot more versatile.

When Fardy left he was a liability on the pitch - a penalty magnet for Aus and In Super rugby. Good player but wasn’t performing and was rightly dropped.

Good for him that things turned out well.

Definitely sorted that out for Leinster, would not have been on the radar here as a penalty magnet.

Won the league every season he was here.

Fardy had some steel for an Aussie backrower which definitely should not be taken for granted.

What a signing he turned out to be.

Definitely one of the best SH imports to have played in the Pro 14 and he deserves another European Cup, he might get one yet. :)

Should have been the wallaby 6 whenever fit. He had the complete game but sadly neither Hooper or Pocock were link players at that stage.
