He's already been capped (once) and found wanting. Running around and putting illegal hits on little blokes is not enough for a test cap. I am unconvince.

Berry I thought was actually pretty generous. He only sent players off after the 3rd or 4th successive infringement, and he let Wright off a Red Card scot-free in the 1st half. It looked to me like the Brumbies actually banked on the 'No Cards in a final' theory, because they were going high/intimidating a lot during the game.

Valetini is 22 but let’s disregard him on the 10 minute opportunity he got when he was younger.
Instead let’s go with one of the players he bullied this year.

That makes sense.

Valetini and McReight are very, very exciting prospects. I can’t understand why we aren’t all over the moon. We wanted a big bad arse backrower and along comes Jerry Collins 2.0……

But some don’t like him because……. Well, they can’t articulate the reason but presumably it’s because they have some other favourite who comes from their suburb of Sydney.

Nic Berry's Wikipedia page...
Nic Berry (born 13 March 1984 in Brisbane) is an Australian rugby union referee and a former professional player. After being forced to retire from playing in 2012 due to a series of concussions. After taking up the whistle he has become renowned for ensuring his former team, the QLD Reds, did not lose a game during the Super Rugby AU Competition. These efforts were never more evident than in the 2021 Super Rugby AU Grand Final, won by his former team, The Reds.

Valetini rag dolled Swinton this year. Swinton’s only chance is if he can find some form, which is he hasn’t shown all year, and Valetini moves to 8.

I am genuinely surprised as to how much that title meant to me. If you had told me 2 years ago that I wouldn't given a rat's arse about being the champion oz team I would have thrown cyber ice at you. Maybe it's just been a really bad year.... I don't talk about it and rarely even think about it all, but the last year or so has been a hard time for a lot of us and maybe I hadn't realised how much it's all affected me. With 5 minutes to go, I felt a level of stress and anxiety that I have rarely felt. It was almost like I was feeling all of the shit from this shitty year all at once. It was a strange feeling and that win was emotional. I'll leave it at that.

I thought Berry had a good game and was fair - he's a very good communicator and he's consistent imo. I actually think he's the best Australian ref we've ever had. But, maybe I'm completely wrong and bias clouds my thinking. The Brumbies are a cynical team and they push the envelope, however, I wouldn't be happy if the Reds ever copped 3 in a game, so I imagine their fans aren't feeling very magnanimous. I really hate when supporters whinge about refs though, because it robs others of the happiness they get from winning. This is why kiwis are such pains in the arse – they either laugh at everyone or cry foul. But that’s just me – top bloke Towny. You guys have to follow your own, shitty, annoying paths.

I thought the Brumbies were awesome. They were the better team tonight but they ran out of legs and players. They're the best-coached team in the comp and since their inception have consistently had the best culture and consistency; however I doubt they've ever shown as much heart as they did tonight. It was really impressive.

Now I'm going to ramble on about players that pop into my head:

- AAA is such a warrior. He played 80 mins and left everything out there. He was one of the best players on the park and I felt for him as he was wiping the grass off his face and trying to get oxygen before that last 6-man scrum. Guys like that are rare as hen's teeth. My thought was, if we lose at least that bloke will be happy - that was my consolation.

- Valetini is a beast. If you don't jerk off over him you're not a red-blooded Australian rugby supporter. Even though his 10 minutes in the bin was a massive blow to his team, I would still have given him MOM. The Brumbies missed Samu a lot but Valetini just kept charging into contact and winning it every time. This kid is like a mobile piece of cement. He's the closest thing to Jerry Collins I've seen - he's even got the mug haircut. I've no doubt he can carry his form into test rugby and will drill them all. I do hope Rennie uses him in the same role he has with the ponies and gives him that leadership role at the fringe in defence and attack. This might give Wilson the freedom to play a wide role that might suit him - he's got good hands and pace. Anyway, to me Valetini feels like the one we've all been waiting for. You can win a World Cup without a great flyhalf but you don't have much chance without a great blindside flanker, and we haven't had one for ages - maybe since Rocky went to Ireland. I think Valetini could be better than him fwiw. I often wax lyrical about players, and sometimes I'm giggling when I do it, but generally not for non-Queenslanders. This adulation is 100% genuine. Swinton and the others are there to make up the numbers.

- Swain...... this bloke probably gets the least attention of all the locks in contention for a gold jersey. At the beginning of the year I thought he had some promise but rated plenty in front of him. There's not many in front of him now in my book. That game was very physical in tight and he gave more than he got. Pain in the arse in the lineout and for a tall guy, he seems to play the whole game with his head no higher than his hips. Another example of the quality of players that the Brumbies' system produces.

- Nick Frost was good! Moving from lock to 6 usually ends in mediocrity but he did a really good job. He appeared to be everywhere. I thought it was a big mistake putting him at 6 but it was another good call from McKellar.

- Lonergan is such a good footballer. Rapid mofo and he loves the hard stuff! I can see why Rennie likes him - he's the only Oz hooker that has the running game of the best kiwi rakes. But, unlike those kiwis, he is not great in the scrum. He's young and he will get much better, but good props will go for him because they know they can cause troubles. Give him a couple of years though and he could be anything.

- Ikitau knows how to tackle! He had a few very good tackles at key times on big units. He didn't get much of a chance in attack, which I'm thankful for.
- Tate McDermott's pass was never great but now it's poor. He needs to fix this if he's to step up to the next level. Good player but he farked some shit up tonight at crucial times and it could have been costly.

- McReight is ready to start at 7 for the Wallabies and I'm not forgetting the other bloke, who is undoubtedly one of the all time greats of Australian rugby and is still at or near his best. McReight is just that good.

- Tupou is worth his weight in gold, which at today's prices is $11,113,771.01 AUD. If RA can sign him on a 5 year deal for less than that it's a bargain. I don't think the Reds would have made the final, let alone win it, if it wasn't for this superstar. For a generation Australian rugby fans have winced every time there was a scrum and we talked about things like 'perception' to explain why year after year our scrum continued to get us whistled off the park. Now we have this guy, who along with BPA, is able to win games at the set piece. Hearing the other teams' fans crow how illegal he is and how much he'll be penalised when a foreign, fair ref gets his hands on him, makes me realise how funny we must have all seemed to other nations when we were shouting at Adam Jones and Carl Hayman. All props cheat all the time so cry me a river - we've now got a bloke that can mince quality packs and I like it! I like it a lot! What makes it better, is that he also happens to be one of the best running forwards in world rugby and is on pace to break the record for tries scored in Super Rugby. Humans like Tupou shouldn't be possible.

- BPA has to be in the Wallaby squad. Only Kaitu'u can match BPA and Uelese, who is easily the strongest at scrum time. Why waste time taking lumps like Porecki? Why even take Mafi? And I like Mafi!

- LSL is back! It was good to see the big man angry and belting people in attack and defence.

- Harry was looking alright until he got hurt. Well, he was actually quiet but I felt he was starting to get his running game going and showed some glimpses of his best. But all year he's been lacking some of the PoW he showed in 2020. Maybe the balance in the pack is a bit different this year. I don't think he's a certainty to get the gold 8 jersey but probably still winning the race.

- Nic White wasn't at his best tonight. His kicking was average and I can't remember him running. He's had a very good year though.

- JOC and Lolesio had mixed games. Did some good things but also took some poor options - both teams lacked shape at times and they needed to step up and take control, but I don't think either did it very well.

Brumbies losing Slipper and Samu, and having Fainga'a on the bench was the difference. Brumbies didn't have much luck this year and key injuries at the worst time cruelled them. And thank Christ for that!

No shortage of drama, really enjoyed that, and loved having a full(ish) house (all baying for blood!), it was awesome.

Some sloppy play by both teams at time, man, the Reds lineout did its best to gift the Brumbies the title.

Re all the Brumbies' cards, well, maybe Valetini's tackle that slipped up into the runner's chops was 50/50, the rest were cynical and someone needed to go both times imho. But I can only imagine Brumbies supporters must be feeling towards the ref right now.

Anyway, great fun to watch as a neutral! Really enjoyed SR AU this season. I thought Stan has done a great job. Good analysis, and they all seem to be really enjoying it, whereas in seasons past with other commentators / presenters, that wasn't always the case to me.

Latish in the second half there was a tackle where a Reds player was clearly unbound in front of the tackled player and the Brumbies were penalised. At best it should have been accidental offside but was more likely a penalty.
The other was when the ball went into touch after the ball pinballed around from the lineout. It looked like the ball came off the foot of a reds play and hit a player in front of him, I think that is offside.
As another posted he had a few howlers near the end.
As far as the scrums are concerned I sincerely hope he is the real deal but we have a long history of props looking the business until they come up against an international ref that has a different view of what went on at scrum time. In particular to me it looks like he angles in at the engagement then shuffles sideways when the pressure goes on. That is his primary weapon for penalty production of which he got a few, he got pinged for it once and got a 'I'm not going to pay that' from a ref at another scrum.

How about the DDT from Wright on Stewart? How that was missed is baffling.

Anyway, I went to the game. The atmosphere was electric. That's the only word for it. The last 20 minutes were insane. Just pure unadulterated raw screaming. Everyone was going off their tits. There was a moment when Berry checked Thor's try attempt in the last minute when the crowd went silent. You could have heard a pin drop.

As for that last crazy minute? My god...

Better team lost, IMHO. The Brumbies attack looked lethal in the first half, dunno how the Reds survived.

The ending was not a particularly good advertisement for our game. "The Keystone Cops try to play rugger".

My only beef with Berry was for pinging Banks for not rolling away in the 73rd minute…

Banks rolled out of the tackle instantly, Hansen is over the ball and 2 Reds players fail to clear him out.

After a moment Berry blows the whistle and tells Banks, who is now standing in the defensive line, that he needs to get out of the tackle.

It was an odd call…

It was a great game, fitting of a grand final. It was played to script with the Brums taking control early but not able to pull away by enough. We all knew that the Reds would come home hard and in the end the Brumbies were powerless to stop them.
The Reds are deserved champions. They have been the best side this year and when in tune, as they were at the death last night, have been unstoppable.
Good signs for Australian rugby with strong performances across the board for both sides.

Enjoy the win mate.

Yeah... that post from Towny about the stress... I can empathise with that. You just don't realise how much it can all mean sometimes, until it's there, on the line.

It's been a shit year all round. Thank whatever we can sit back and enjoy the shit we do.

Some questionable calls Berry is our very own Nigel Owens.
That said it was a good outcome for Oz rugby.
Never fvck with this comp RA its here to stay, only puzzle should be how and who the 6th side could/should be.
Well done Reds
You think one sell out will keep the comp going? I enjoyed game and was supporting the Reds, but buggered if I can see a 5 team comp being substainable. Have a look at how well things went in Soccer a few years back, huge crowds, some Sydney team won comp in front of packed house, everyone crowed that soccer was here to stay as major sport in Oz etc, I not sure too many are saying same now.

I was sparked out in the 80th minute playing rugby yesterday, only released from the hospital around 11pm NZ time with stitches above the eye, the lady will love that. Missed both games, this is the one I'd love to get my hands on to catch up. Would anyone know where I could find it online?

Agree with Towny about Valetini. What sealed it for me was the (legal) collision with Harry Wilson, which took Wilson off the field, and had no noticeable effect on Valetini.

Backrow of Valetini, Wilson, and Hooper, I reckon.
