Thought Berry was great.

JOC, McWreight, Valetini, Tupou, many others had great games.

Brumbies knew what was coming and were courageous in defence, but their discipline was found wanting, as it has all year.

Got to hand it to Brad Thorn, he has turned this team around. Wasn't a fan, but you cannot argue with success.

Have to say I’m a tad scratchy myself, voice-wise. Some of it was from bellowing helpful suggestions to Mr Berry; a fair chunk was from shrieking ‘Turn that shit off’ whenever the PA system was playing some fúcken awful forty-year old song while the game was in progress.

Hmmm. In retrospect, it may be that I made a somewhat of a cvnt of myself. Again.

You think one sell out will keep the comp going? I enjoyed game and was supporting the Reds, but buggered if I can see a 5 team comp being substainable. Brumbie_Steve wrote: Sat May 08, 2021 10:42 pm Latish in the second half there was a tackle where a Reds player was clearly unbound in front of the tackled player and the Brumbies were penalised. At best it should have been accidental offside but was more likely a penalty.
The other was when the ball went into touch after the ball pinballed around from the lineout. It looked like the ball came off the foot of a reds play and hit a player in front of him, I think that is offside.
As another posted he had a few howlers near the end.
As far as the scrums are concerned I sincerely hope he is the real deal but we have a long history of props looking the business until they come up against an international ref that has a different view of what went on at scrum time. In particular to me it looks like he angles in at the engagement then shuffles sideways when the pressure goes on. That is his primary weapon for penalty production of which he got a few, he got pinged for it once and got a 'I'm not going to pay that' from a ref at another scrum.
Is that it? What about the penalty try from the line out maul when it was pulled down 1m out? Swain got a YC but it was a certain try, but he didn’t call it.

You can always point to a ref’s bad decision in every single game. And the Brumbies’ scrum is weak when Lonergan is hooker - every team has troubled him. Don’t blame illegal scrummaging - it’s just the same wishful thinking Oz fans had when we got towelled up by all and sundry. But the Force and Rebels did quite well against the Reds’ scrum at times, so it’s up to the Brumbies why they weren’t able to match them. Losing Slipper was massive and he was replaced by a bloke miles off the pace - Sio is a spent force. The Brumbies are playing the Crusaders next week and I reckon you’ll see more of the same, regardless of who’s reffing.

And we’ve got a long history and not once have we had a prop that looked anything like Tupou. Never. He’s a freak. To label him as a cheat is just bitterness and the shit I’ve read since last night’s game from Australian rugby fans is disgraceful.

Anyway, I went to the game. The atmosphere was electric. That's the only word for it. The last 20 minutes were insane. Just pure unadulterated raw screaming. Everyone was going off their tits. There was a moment when Berry checked Thor's try attempt in the last minute when the crowd went silent. You could have heard a pin drop.

As for that last crazy minute? My god...
So much tension for such a long period. I can't remember a game where it was like that for so long - unrelenting for 10 minutes.

There's no way I would have agreed with this 10 weeks ago, but now I'm not so sure.
I still think the full TT is the way to go but I'm far less certain.

That is awesome!! Rugby has become a real bargain for Nine/Stan and it's great for Oz rugby that Nine's bet has paid off so well. You'd hope that these ratings increases will continue into the Bledisloes - Nine is going to make them seem like a State of Origin, with lots of "THAT IS SUCH A SPECIAL BLEDISLOE MOMENT!!!"

Edit - just to add, I think the 100k from Stan is better than it looks. My understanding is that’s now many subscribers were tuned in, but each may have had more than one viewer. But this isn’t counted because streamers, who aren’t selling advertising to companies that want their ads in front of as many eyeballs as possible, don’t really care how many people watch stuff, but how
subscription accounts tune in.

Incidentally, this is why they haven’t prioritised getting into pubs.

Mate I not too worried either way,I prefer a proper comp because I don't believe this will last more than a year or two, but I a bit amused that it's now Leap Frog Marinos that's supposedly going ahead with it, and not RA (McLennan said same thing) if RA is run by only one person by geez there some problems there!

It is a proper comp...not sure what youre not seeing, 2nd year with rivalries, tight contests and crowds coming back except for the Tahs and good and growing media coverage.
If we want to rival the other sports we need a fully domestic comp.
The trans Tasman is needed too but I think there is room for both.
Marinos who will no doubt have his SANZAAR expansion glasses on has already thrown it out the window and is thinking of an expansion across the pacific to North America for a 32 team 4 conference mega comp.

Ok, I just can't see a 5 team comp lasting. I know it's been great, for a short term thing, and many I spoken to here in NZ have loved the Super Ao, but I haven't spoken to many that see it as anything but temporary.
And as I said if Leap Frog Marinos is the only one who decides what comps you in, your board is f***ed big time!

Wasn’t a great advertisement? It was possibly the best advertisement for Australian rugby for a long time. Did you see the ratings or heard reports from league fans that stumbled onto the game? It blew their minds! This was a a huge night for Australian rugby.

I've spoken to quite a number of people who haven't watched rugby in years but watched that game. Most, if not all, remark that the game seems to be massively more physical than they remember. My brother in law's father was completely enamoured with Tupou. Almost besotted with him. Reckons he saw him walk out and thought "typical fat union player" but then saw his work rate and fell in love.

This match was a massive shot in the arm for the code.

Those quick taps at the end instead of just walking a weak scrum, now down to 6 men, for an almost guaranteed pushover try. I was screaming at the time, but in retrospect it was so good.

It was almost like a message went down to JOC from the channel 9 accountants, “Mr Sneesby would like to make Mr O’Conner aware, that the Broncos game is now over and there are more half a million people watching right now, so anything you can do to focus on entertainment and live action would be greatly appreciated.”

JOC crumples the paper in his hand and nods to himself. He knows what’s in a league fan’s head and knows what he must do. “No more scrums boys and if we haven’t scored after 5 phases we’re putting up a bomb.”

"guy sat behind me and my family at the Reds - Brumbies match last night. He was drunk but very happy and we sparked up a conversation. Halfway through the first half he said "You've got a great looking head. Mind if I rub it for good luck" and I said "Whatever it takes to get the win, fam" He did this right up until the 80th minute. Can't help but feel somewhat responsible for the win. You're welcome, Reds fans."

Bloke sitting next to me said "Why didn't you blast him in the head? That's what I would have done" I told him I was at the Super Rugby grand final and I'd rather my kids have a tremendous Reds win in their memory bank rather than vision of their father getting dragged out of the stadium after starting a brawl. De-escalation is my strategy. Also, he bought me a beer afterwards!

Had no idea who he was or what his name was.

I was quite sweaty too after walking to find my mates. Didn't seem to bother him. At one point he gave me a back massage. He also gently tweaked my ear in the direction he wanted Lolesio to kick the ball.

I don’t miss that about Australia. Some ‘friendly’ stranger that thinks shit like that is okay. If it was me, my kids would have almost certainly have a bad experience burned into their subconscious. But I likely don’t put out the same vibe as you so perhaps he wouldn’t have wanted to touch me; preferring to spill beer down my back all night instead.

Credit to JOC for taking the decision. Icy cool.

Shows how much he’s matured as a footballer. He’s side-by-side with McCaw now in the clutch captain stakes, probably

I’m going to start calling him ‘J-Cold’ now. I think it might catch on.

And as I said if Leap Frog Marinos is the only one who decides what comps you in, your board is f***ed big time!
I said earlier in the thread a 6th team would be great to stop the bye and have another game for punters but who would that be, breaking up states doesnt really work and how do you form a team from NT, SA, Tas. Best I can come up with is an Exiles team, journeymen, returned Ozzies that a Wallaby spot like O Conner did and other jonny foreigners. Matera really wanted to play with a super team in Oz but wasnt wanted.
I dont think fans would get bored at all, they will get bored of flogging by NZ teams if we fall back into that zone.
Anyway, its cut, sad.
Marinos is there to make decisions hes the CEO, with governance from the Chairman and board.

Anyway
Wayne Smith who must of got sick of the negativity about rugby at the Australian is now writing for the SMH liked it.
Was the Super Rugby final the most significant provincial game in Australian rugby history?

As the dust settles on arguably the most significant provincial game in Australian rugby history, the realisation is dawning that while the Queensland Reds may have had collective grounds for celebrations, individually a few of them took a hit.

Many a facile word is spoken in commentary but many a true one as well and Tim Horan’s observation at fulltime that “rugby is back” was on the money. Rugby has been doing it tough for years, battered by a largely hostile media, but the faithful kept their lamps burning and on Saturday night 42,000 of them brought them out. As much as the Reds and Brumbies lit up Suncorp Stadium with their ferocity and dedication, the crowd watching them was also making a statement of its own.

From the best welcome to country done on a rugby ground through to James O’Connor’s nerveless conversion of his own try, this was rugby at its brightest. Not its best, because the Reds frankly were outplayed for huge chunks of the game by a desperately unlucky Brumbies. But in terms of what it meant to the game overall in this country, I can think of no other comparable match to equal it.

There were, of course, some conspicuous success stories on Saturday night but more on Taniela Tupou, James O’Connor and Fraser McReight in just a moment. Consider for a moment winger Jordan Petaia, halfback Tate McDermott, lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa who all contributed desperately to the razor-thin win but, on reflection, probably lost ground in the hunt for a Wallabies jersey.

Petaia looks like a man in need of tough love from coach Brad Thorn, though that may not work for him. He is capable of some utterly freakish things – witness the extraordinary try he almost scored from an impossible position – but he risks leaving his talents unfulfilled if he persists in carrying the ball in one hand.
McDermott sadly saved his worst passing game of the season for a night when a solid technical game might have pushed him ahead of Nic White, while Salakai-Loto and France-bound Paenga-Amosa literally couldn’t get their acts together in the lineouts.

Australia is fascinated by recalling non-jumping second-rower Will Skelton from France, despite his past reluctance to answer his country’s call on anything but his own terms, but while the dearth of locks continues, this fascination will persist. That said, while Cadeyrn Neville provided his usual reliable service, it was the gritty combativeness of the Brumbies other lock, Darcy Swain, which excited most speculation.

Tupou the superstar tighthead has already become Australia’s most dangerous weapon, though Spidercam is not his friend. Those overhead shots of him angling in will be damaging down the track and he needs to literally square up at scrumtime. Still, would the Reds have won without him? Not a chance.

A Super Rugby clash that felt like a Test match threw up not one Wallabies captain options but two, O’Connor and McReight, assuming Wallabies coach Dave Rennie is in a mood to move on from Michael Hooper.

O’Connor is for now and McReight for later, though if he did take over he would be the same age as Hooper when he led Australia for the first time as a 22-year-old.

Time and again, McReight was where Queensland needed him to be, demonstrating a rare awareness of pivotal moments. When the Brumbies unexpectedly opened the door at the 79th minute with a wild lineout tap-down, he was the man who grabbed possession which ultimately set up victory for Queensland.

Throughout the season, O’Connor scarcely made a questionable call as captain until the crazy final minutes when he made several. To take a quick tap and not a scrum against an exhausted six-man Brumbies pack seemed sheer lunacy but, as O’Connor explained later, he wanted to take the referee out of the equation.

It might seem a curious explanation given that Brumbies coach Dan McKellar clearly felt Nic Berry had it in for his side – as a penalty county of 20-8 might suggest. Yet it was only 10 months ago that Berry penalised McReight for a ruck infringement in the 82nd minute of a Brumbies-Reds match at GIO Stadium and up stepped Mack Hansen to kick the goal that ensured the 2020 grand final would be played in Canberra.

Berry, a former Queensland halfback, is so far ahead of the refereeing field in Australia that it is hardly surprising he has handled all three cliff hanging Reds-Brumbies matches this season. But Rugby Australia left him exposed by not bringing in a Kiwi referee to handle the final.

There are tougher challenges ahead for Australian rugby, starting this weekend with five trans-Tasman matches, but let’s not gloss over the significance of Saturday night.

A ground attendance of just under 42,000, a peak live television audience of 464,000 on Nine … oh yes, this was precisely what Australian rugby needed.

For a team to be successful it must create something that supporters can 'belong to'. The Reds are part of my identity while Qld Country aren't - in fact, no one anywhere cares about Qld Country the rugby team and they never will. This is why the Ryder Cup is HUGE but the Presidents Cup is lame - "Yay! Go, Rest of the World....."
This is why it's hard to find more teams in Australia - how do you create another team in Qld that will play against Qld? Who is going to belong to that community? Merging multiple states together won't work.

Is it such a bad thing to play a comp with the kiwis? I think it's the best option we've got and I reckon in time it will become the best comp in the world, if it's not already.
