Both our families are well thank God, but we have been the lucky ones, even still, we feel trapped. In limbo. Praying that our turn won’t be next. Our toddler is now four years old and hasn’t seen her grannies and grandas since she was two. The feeling is one of going to work, coming home, bringing up our children, enjoying all Queensland has to offer – between lockdowns – and consistently wondering what that feeling is that something is wrong. We don’t feel right. We need to get home, to fill our buckets again.
I guess it’s now like what previous generations that emigrated experienced, they knew trips back to Ireland would be few and far between. Australia is a great place to live, great opportunities and a fantastic lifestyle but now it feels so detached from the rest of the world so isolated and our lives here now are like living in a bubble that cannot be burst.
My husband lost his job with an Asian company and was out of work for four months . The three children have home schooled for most of the year. I work in healthcare and returned to full time work. Financially we have survived but the hardest thing is not seeing my parents or family in Ireland and then not coming out. Australia is a great place as long as you know you can get home to family. Because of the state borders I can’t see my sister in NSW. One of the main reasons I came to Australia in the first place. Family is everything and Covid has reinforced this making me now question why I’m here.
Plenty of NZ comments there. The countries with the hardest border policies are going to find to attract high skilled emigrants for years to come. I guess the natural resources of Australia will help but nobody sane is going to be emigrating to the likes of China, NZ or Australia anytime soon.
I've had two people from my office return to the UK or Ireland for a few weeks for Family reasons. They have to jump through a few extra hoops, but it was fine.

The NH have gone hilariously nuts on the Oz threads, if it’s not these two it’s members of the swarm misrepresenting our lockdown. What is funny is that I just assumed they didn’t have lockdowns over in Ireland, then I stumbled across an article about how they had one of the most through lockdowns in the NH.
And you'll see us criticising the length of our lockdown.

i) construction shut down on the same day a protest happened, what a conicidence
ii) Melbourne set to win the title as the world's most locked down city
Stay-at-home orders have been extended for at least another month, ensuring Melbourne, Australia, will become the most locked-down city in the world by a large margin. If so, Melbourne will overtake Buenos Aires as the world’s most locked-down city on October 4.

If lockdown lifts on October 26 as planned, Melbourne will have spent in hard lockdown for 267 days, or nearly 9 months, since March of last year.
iii) "Hard and early", as you claimed, hasn't worked.

Except in QLD, where we have dealt with numerus Delta outbreaks by shutting down hard and early. We have a much larger population that Ireland and have suffered just seven COVID-19 deaths. You love to pick and choose data to suit your trolling.

What a dumb question. How would I know? We don't tally our covid-19 deaths by measuring excess mortality. If you have had COVID-19 in the 28 days prior to dying you are counted as a COVID-19 death in Australia. QLD has had seven deaths, largely because of the hard, early lockdowns that Blackrock Bullet is trolling.

7.6% in May. 6.3% more than average for the first half of the year. It's not too difficult to find.

The most recent provisional mortality report shows an increase in excess deaths from January this year of 6.3%.

Typically, increments or decrements would be determined by comparison with a five-year rolling average of the immediately preceding five years, but not in this case. Calendar year 2020 was omitted and 2015-2019 instead used for the five year period.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics, the agency compiling the data, gave this explanation:
'As mortality during 2020 had periods where deaths were significantly lower than expected, 2020 has not been included in the baseline average.'.

There is nothing dishonest here. Melbourne have gone "hard and early" the last few times, this time it didn't work. Additionally, despite the fact that New Zealand make a virtue of their lockdowns and going hard and early, Auckland has been in a prolonged lockdown. Clearly places like Queensland and Perth have been very fortunate to avoid prolonged lockdowns, if you don't agree that there has been luck there, you are directly criticising the state of Victoria and also New Zealand.

Why are you laughing? We all stated that we were in a long lockdown, though I will say that the definition of "hard" there is loose. Ireland was in a hard lockdown for 2 months last spring. The November lockdown was not a hard lockdown, with construction and schools open. We were then in a hard lockdown for about 2 months in winter, with schools and construction progressively reopening over the course of the third month.

Regardless, we have been out of hard lockdown for months now. You are getting to that point and good on ya, the last 3 months have been tough for you.

The week-by-week numbers for registered deaths in 2021 are broadly comparable for their 2020 equivalents.

That said, 2020 is done and dusted whereas the 2021 numbers include only deaths occurring by the end of May and registered by the end of July. For whatever reason, registered deaths in 2020 began falling below from the 2015-2019 average from mid August to early November.

Buggered if I know. The tricky bit might be the earlier period, not the later.

I know from last year's reports that early 2020 seemed to have quite a few excess deaths compared with the 2015-2019 average at a time when there weren't many covid fatalities and lockdowns hadn't really become a thing.

My uneducated guess at that would be effects of the Christmas / New Year 2019 / 20 bushfires. Lots of smoke and particulates for a longish while over a large area can be a material public health hazard.

Don't know. The provisional mortality numbers are aggregated for all of Australia and not presented regionally.

You’re probably losing a chunk of people to failures from lockdowns and your health systems as well.

It’ll all come out in the years to come.

Seems like end of days stuff down there, the city with the longest lockdown in the world and violence on the streets. Hard and early doesn’t seem to have worked as well as some posters claimed.
Refuting woefully uninformed criticism is not being overly sensitive.
Once again, you are full of shit.
In what respect?

i) construction shut down on the same day a protest happened, what a conicidence
ii) Melbourne set to win the title as the world's most locked down city
Stay-at-home orders have been extended for at least another month, ensuring Melbourne, Australia, will become the most locked-down city in the world by a large margin. If so, Melbourne will overtake Buenos Aires as the world’s most locked-down city on October 4.

If lockdown lifts on October 26 as planned, Melbourne will have spent in hard lockdown for 267 days, or nearly 9 months, since March of last year.
iii) "Hard and early", as you claimed, hasn't worked.
What has become abundantly clear during this pandemic is just how thick supposedly educated people can be.

Hard and early hasn't worked?

How many people do you think would be Clogsing (sic) Victorian ICU wards now if we hadn't gone hard and early against Delta?

Hint: Probably not around 200, in a state of 6,000,000.

I'd say we'd be doing our best Indian impression, with people in hallways, ramps, and dying in their own homes in the hundreds before even being able to access emergency treatment.

Hard and early hasn’t worked, you are in lockdown and are heading for world record territory.

Come back to us when you have your whole hospital picture completed and the costs of lockdowns are clearer. The “hard and early” mantra you adopted has faltered, and you are stuck for weeks more in lockdown.

Except in QLD, where we have dealt with numerus Delta outbreaks by shutting down hard and early. We have a much larger population that Ireland and have suffered just seven COVID-19 deaths. You love to pick and choose data to suit your trolling.
And by how much has Australian excess mortality risen in that period? 8%? 10?
The most recent provisional mortality report shows an increase in excess deaths from January this year of 6.3%.

Typically, increments or decrements would be determined by comparison with a five-year rolling average of the immediately preceding five years, but not in this case. Calendar year 2020 was omitted and 2015-2019 instead used for the five year period.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics, the agency compiling the data, gave this explanation:
'As mortality during 2020 had periods where deaths were significantly lower than expected, 2020 has not been included in the baseline average.'.
That's an increase in mortality over 'expected' - not an increase in excess mortality - (as you corrected in following posts)

Yeah, speaking of 'an increase in excess deaths' is a bit clumsy, confusing and poorly-put.

This morning I went for a surf, worked and am going to do a bushwalk with the dog over lunch. It's 26c and not a cloud in the sky.

If I finish work early I might go for a swim. Friday last week I played 12 holes of golf with my brother.

Lockdown in Australia is better than living in the UK and Ireland fullstop.

Yep, last weekend I went for a swim in the newly renovated Dawn Fraser pool, then picnicked in the park, tomorrow it's a boys picnic and then two test matches to watch.

I've spent most of the lockdown complaining about how it's not a properly enforced lockdown while the NH brigade make out we're on Alcatraz.

Tired, so doing fvck all other than drinking quiet beers, eating, posting shit on here and watching NZ provincial rugby from 5pm.

You should wander into town and get some footage of the protesters. 😉

Given the numbers today that sounds like it would be too hard.

Dreadful stuff, it is going to take some time to rebuild the basic fabric of society.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-06/ ... /100516822
Police are investigating a suspicious car fire at Mount Gambier overnight, in what appears to be a targeted attack on a woman who tested positive to COVID-19 earlier this week.

A Holden sedan had been set alight in the driveway, with flames threatening to spread to the house.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the car and caused surface damage to the building.

No-one was home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.

Good grief.
