The phrase ‘play the ball, not the man’ has no place in rugby

Post by shanky »

Especially in the context of rugby chat forums

I mean, if you weren’t allowed to ‘play the man’ then there’d be no such thing as rugby.

What a fvcked up rule.

Anyway, your point is stupid. You're still playing the ball when you're playing the man in rugby.

Not the way I played :P

We have a whole area of play called off the ball (rucks etc), with little or no connection to the ball

It's all related to the ball though.

Unless you're just talking about thuggery.

Without the ball there is no ruck.

 you got burned and that's a hopeless comeback.

That said, I'm not a massive fan of the constant playing of the man on "rugby forums". It gets a little too tedious for my precious little panties. Sounds like crazy talk I know, but sometimes it even seems like a bunch of nerds pretending to be rugby men.

I didn't get burned ffs.

Other than thuggery all acts on the rugby pitch are to gain an advantage in relation to the ball. It's a mindlessly stupid point to say rugby fans shouldn't use the phrase in question. It would suggest the OP doesn't actually understand what the phrase means.

Yes you did. "Play the ball" refers to literally making a play at the ball. Like when you tackle a player in football, you have to be making a clear attempt at playing directly at the ball.

That does not always occur in rugby.

"Colliding with a guy off the ball so your team can get the ball" just doesn't count mate. Nice try though.

You have options.

You can do that, or you can admit you were wrong about a silly little thing.

I'm perfectly happy with my responses. It seems it's your problem, not mine. Ever wonder why that keeps happening to you?

(now that's playing the man).

C'mon bro. We all know what the saying means non-literally: "play by the rules, don't be a dick". Fair enough.

But you have to admit that if we're being literal, you're not playing the ball when you clean out someone from a ruck. Instead of just conceding that, you come up with some convoluted argument that "it's all related to the ball" because you can't admit to being wrong about anything at all. It's hilarious.

Why am I not surprised?

Have you ever even played rugby?

I'm not interested in this stupid argument.

Besides, as has been pointed out, the term originates in football, not rugby

It’s a saying, not a legal concept - And no amount of legal pettifogging from the Texan solicitor is going to change that.

A defender will get a yellow card if they play the ball unrealistically.
