Cristiano Ronaldo snub wipes billions off Coca-Cola’s market value

Portugal captain rejects bottles in Euro 2020 press conference. Soft drink company’s share price drops by 1.6%

Cristiano Ronaldo’s removal of two Coca-Cola bottles during a press conference at the European Championship has coincided with a $4bn fall in the share price of the drinks company.

The Portugal captain is a renowned health fanatic and made it clear what he thinks of the carbonated soft drink. The 36-year-old shifted the bottles of Coca-Cola away from him during a press conference in Budapest on Monday in the prelude to his country’s Group F game against Hungary.

Ronaldo followed it by holding up a bottle of water before declaring in Portuguese: “Agua!”, appearing to encourage people to choose that instead.

Coca-Cola is one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020. The company’s share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242bn to $238bn – a drop of $4bn.

Sorry mate.

I can delete this thread if you want me to.

I haven't read the long one. Probably deserves it's own though.

I'm not fussed. Stuff can easily be buried in some of the long topics so it's fine to think something might need a thread of it's own.

Have seen this on social media these last few days, utter nonstory
1. He advertises KFC so healthiness doesn’t bother him for a price
2. Coke went XD I think so was always going to drop by the equivalent value , in any case a couple of percent movement for a listed company is quite normal
3. Look at Coke SP graph and there has been some profit taking after recent decent run potentially

Him moving the bottle has generated more publicity for coke than if he left it, it even got it's own fred on Planet Rugby. that will make up for any minor loss in the value of the company..

I think the the federations will tolerate this for a while but then stamp down on it by politely, discreetly but firmly pointing out to the sports stars (via their clubs and nations) that these sponsors indirectly pay their wages.

Same principle with the tennis player and the media.

Um, no

Does depend on how you define free range I suppose , but mechanically slaughtered animals with a 30’day lifespan and a raft of medical conditions probably isn’t most people’s image of free range

That's disappointing.

You were surprised that Irish chicken had all these health problems ?
If you are going to fry it and cover with spices then it doesn’t really matter if it’s factory pus filled chicken. I have a slight unfair knowledge on this as I used to work in the financial subsidiary of Cargill, One ornthe largest private companies in the US, and they supply kfc chicken - and it ain’t free range

A couple of pieces of chicken with some wicked wings and a potato and gravy and I am living in healthy land in comparison.

London water hs been through about 10 people before you get to drink it. The Devon stuff probably has a taste that isn't 5% bleach.

There's always the taste vs bacteria trade-off. I use a Brita filter only for my kettle. The filtered water tastes better for sure but the filter media can be a hot bed of bacteria.

London water gets recycled via the Thames, though. The rest of us have reservoirs and aquifers, so just fish piss and agricultural run off to worry about.

Fair play, but reading that I could go through each of those comparisons and rip them to shreds. The most obvious being.

"McDonald's: 508kcal in a Big Mac - To offset this classic in the gym, hit the boxing bag. A 45-minute session of jabs, hooks and crosses is enough to outwork this caloric knockout.

KFC: 730kcal in three pieces of chicken - Hog the rack for 90 minutes with a lower-body workout of back squats, deadlifts and power cleans to counterbalance a KFC feast."

A big Mac is about half the size of the ads, so you would need to eat at least 2 to hit 3 pieces of chicken.
