Australia's next submarine fleet will be nuclear-powered. The $90 billion program to build up to 12 French-designed submarines scrapped…instead opting to work with the UK and US.

Great decision - the French SSN turned into a SSK was an awful idea. The rumour is it will be a British reactor (PWR3) sitting in an American hull (Virginia class). Only downside for the UK is the RAN will no doubt be out to poach our naval officers even more so than usual.

Australia evidently needs nuclear powered boats cause of the vast scale of the pacific.

So, No.1, No.8 and No.21 who are already ostensibly allies are going to do something or other?

What’s the context no 1, no 8 and no 21?

In terms of defence spending?

Because that should be 1, 5 and 11.

So this is a big announcement because the Quad and the efforts to drum up Asian allies Kamala's tour feel flat on its face. Vietnam went so bad that her press conf was cut short by the Vietnamese to state to China that she only speaks for herself there and then invite the Chinese FM this week.

This is a united stand from a position of weakness, not the strength it seems and will be seen as such outside the anglosphere I suspect. Still, 3 musketeers, Two miles away from Asia and the other is an invader who kinda refuses to ever been seen as from the region.

One for all, and all for one.

The other Pacific Power responds: 8)
“New Zealand is first and foremost a nation of the Pacific and we view foreign policy developments through the lens of what is in the best interest of the region," Ardern said.

"We welcome the increased engagement of the UK and US in the region and reiterate our collective objective needs to be the delivery of peace and stability and the preservation of the international rules based system.

"Australia’s arrangement with the US and the UK is primarily around technology and defence hardwear, with the centrepiece being the purchase of nuclear submarines by Australia," Ardern said.

She said this new group "in no way changes our security and intelligence ties with these three countries, as well as Canada". New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States are members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network.”

"New Zealand’s position in relation to the prohibition of nuclear powered vessels in our waters remains unchanged."

Fcuk off we're full...

France are rightly aggrieved. They thought they had a deal with Australia, only for Australia to renege on it, and apparently not even tell them. I suspect a missing fax.

It's ironic that the Aussies ditched the French to nuke-up the South Pacific, and import enriched uranium from the US. And turn themselves into a new potential theatre of war that the major powers wouldn't care about so much.

The best thing about this is we may get a new Midnight Oil album.

So.......this'll stir things up a bit.......

BEIJING (Reuters) -China has filed an application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the country's commerce ministry said on Thursday, as the world's second-biggest economy looks to bolster its clout in trade.
Commerce Minister Wang Wentao submitted China's application to join the free trade agreement in a letter to New Zealand's trade minister, Damien O'Connor, the Chinese ministry said in a statement.
The CPTPP was signed by 11 countries including Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan and New Zealand in 2018.
Britain and Thailand have also signalled interest in joining the CPTPP.
Wang and O'Connor held a telephone conference to discuss the next steps following China's application, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said.

If the Aussies, Brits and Yanks decide to sail the nuclear subs through New Zealand waters although they can jump up and down there is Sweet Fanny Adams that the New Zealanders can do about it.

I think that is gonna become the rule of the seas for many more nations too

Whatcha gonna do about it
Like making islands for military bases in the South China sea to control shipping lanes.
Control or defend ...shipping lanes.....from China.

You do realise the belt and road is also about alternatives because the US actually had plans to try to starve China as part of its containment.

Imagine being so naive and stupid that you actually think the US containment if China was for good reasons and not trying to be a global hegemonic loon state
