Your Biggest Rivalries in International Rugby

Haven't done one of these in a while. Just not enough rugby on .

Two questions:

What country is your country's biggest rival?
Which country do enjoy beating the most?

I'll begin for Ireland.

What country is your biggest rival?

Wales. We share same domestic league, familiarity breeds contempt, the rivalry has been two and fro since 2005. Wales wins more 6 Nations, Irish teams do better in European club competitions. Both supporters do NOT want to lose this match more than any other match.
Worst team to lose to bar none. Dreadful winners. Winning gives relief more than satisfaction

Which country do you enjoy beating the most?

England. In the NH they are always the benchmark and they always expect to win even when they have average teams. Always good to shut their media up as well when they're brought back to earth. Their supporters are good sports mainly. Very satisfying when Ireland beats England and not too bad when we lose as long as its not at home.

Why does Wales bother you guys so much?

I can honestly say Ireland isn't even on the radar for almost all Welsh fans.

England is the one that matters. I personally enjoy Wales Vs France games as they tend to provide the best rugby in the six Nations as a spectacle.

Gatland.

He can be credited with creating the rivalry. It's now top 3 game in the 6 Nations after France v England and England v Wales

For the first question, Wales I guess, for the reasons you mention, although I've loved that under Schmidt we became competitive enough against France, Australia and South Africa that you felt those games were 50-50

For the second it's a toss up between England and Scotland. England for the reasons you say. Scotland becasue theyhad the hex on us for so long, despite their players not being significantly better than ours for a lot of that time.

I'd say genuinely off the board Wales supporters don't have any real feeling about beating Ireland. It's England by far and away, that nothing else really registers.

There’s a real sense of achievement in beating England because they’ve much larger resources and playing numbers . The fixture generates the most public interest so there’s great craic in the pubs and around town when we win while their supporters are usually gracious in defeat so there’s rarely bad vibes

Beating Wales doesn’t bring the same sense of achievement because it’s a game we probably feel we should be winning most of the time(rightly or wrongly) given the state of their club game. It’s usually more a sense of relief when we win as the fixture has developed into a bit of a grudge match this century.

I always presumed it was since Ireland discovered BOD, they instantly thought they deserved a seat at the top table, they actually thought they should be chairing every meeting. They could not fathom how these little upstarts across the water were not only good at the game but are going about winning grand slams under the reign of BOD and Saviour.

I presume the legacy of that just continues to this day.

:? Has it ? I presume that is in Ireland. I can honestly say I don't know any Welsh who have any particular interest in winning against Ireland other than winning a six Nations game.

England and France. Also International Rugby isn't the club game ....or Irish provincial rugby

From our side we only started disliking Wales after 2008.

The upstarts was the Irish view of the Welsh, that's what I am saying. They just couldn't fathom how they having been playing and dominating the European game with all these greats and legends and with such grace for over a century, "Bods game...who is this Gareth Edwards and JPR they talk of...who are these false idols"

No the animosity comes from Gatland. The Wales v Ireland rivalry started in 2008 with Gatland bringing up his poor treatment by IRFU.

Then in 2009 winning the GS on their turf hurt them a lot. Gatland even said before that game the Welsh hated us more than England. It's turned into one of the must watch 6 Nations games

I'll let the proper Welsh answer for Wales.

Put in your two answers or leave the thread
Feel free to define proper Welsh again after your utter failure of Welsh know how, and recycled references like the last time on the football.
I was backed up by the Welsh posters. You were backed up by DAC. Go figure.
Yes anonymous stranger's on a message board posting mostly form English cottages who you don't really know. I bet they shared their Welsh credentials with you. While I actually backed up my assertions with some evidence as you'll recall. Not that facts ever sway you. I guess you're still waiting for the millions that Nigerian Prince promised you in that email years ago.

The upstart bit sentiment from the Welshies is true.

From our side we only started disliking Wales after 2008.
Yeah two grand slams under Lord Bod ...gotta hurt I suppose.

The upstarts was the Irish view of the Welsh, that's what I am saying. They just couldn't fathom how they having been playing and dominating the European game with some greats and grace for over a century, "Bods game...who is this Gareth Edwards and JPR they talk of...who are these false idols"
And two wins against the Abs . Not to be laughed at at all.

It hurt to not win at home and to let Wellies not Henson take a pen that was always out of his range. History could have been different and Henson taking it would have been so funny.

Lord Bod never beat the AB
King Johnny did though. Twice.

Re Henson. We'll never know. You'll just have to imagine
To lose to for Ireland the worst team is Wales.

England are good winners. Media are dreadful but ordinary fans are good uns

By trying to claim Ireland vs Wales is in the top 3 rivals in the 6 Nations?

Quite the hissy fit just because I pointed out the obvious, that it pretty self-evidently isn't given the 3 give Le Crunch, Eng-Scot and Eng-Wales is clear and f**king obviously bigger and more intense to anyone who follows Rugby? I think statements like that is making the board a joke.

Looks like we've got to the Irish if they're counting us a big rivalry. That 2011 game must hurt.

England is our big rivals but we're not alone there. Beating Straya always pleases me after our last minute losses making us bitter

For Ireland

England - for the exact same reason as its the biggest rivalry for every serious rugby nation in the world. The cnuts! But genuinely nice supporters usually and I have a lot of respect for them.

Wales - there's no extra celebration for beating then. However any los to them hurts extra bad. By a huge margin the worst supporters in rugby. Most don't know any of the laws, none have any sense of winning with grace.

I was at that game in Wellington.

Then we lost the next 6 Nations game to a Wayne Barnes penalty.

Joe's first Wales game we stuffed them 27-3

Yes you lost that game due to the Nordie's brainfart moment. We were at our peak then absolutely breezing to another GS

For us they're not that bad. Great to beat but not bad to lose to.

I remember the 90s and always losing to Scotland. That was really annoying.

It used to be France and England that were the hardest games to get tickets.

Now its England and Wales.
