Ouchie, sounds unpleasant.BlackMac wrote:Serious misshap at the weekend. Went out for a 25 mile ride on a virtually empty stomach and with only a litre of water and two raisin bars. Stupidly decided to take a detour which I thought would add about 8 miles but misjudged it and it was nearer 55 miles in total and pretty hilly. The last 10 miles of which were slightly uphill into a horrific headwind. With about 4 miles to go I totally cracked and ended up sitting at the side of the road completely unable to go on, contemplating the shame of phoning my wife to come and pick me up. Eventually I managed to pull myself together and got home.
Despite a lifetime of pretty serious physical nonsense I have never felt so completely and utterly spent as I did and felt shit for hours.
I somehow managed to bonk on my 10-mile commute once I think it was the first ride back after a bit of time off, on a freezing cold evening, straight into pissing rain and a heavy headwind - really got to the stage when I felt I couldn't go on - the only sustenance I had was my water bottle and I remember panicking when I finished the last bit as I thought it was the only thing keeping me from collapsing. Just about managed to drag myself home, hoovered down the nice dinner my wife had made in about 10 secs flat then promptly fell into a deep sleep on the sofa, waking up several hours later feeling right as rain if a little disorientated. Pretty strange episode, as I don't think I was under-nourished (it certainly seems unlikely in my case).
It's a good job I generally avoid any proper riding...
