1. Is there a lot of crossover between Hurling and Gaelic Football? Do many players play both?
2. Is there still (or was there) a cultural divide between Rugby and GAA sports. I remember when Ireland played at Croke Park, there had to be a GAA rule change as Rugby was considered an "English Sport"
3. Are the players professional
4. What is the point of the Hurling (and to a lesser extent Gaelic Football) goalkeepers, most of the time the ball is hoofed far above their heads.
At the lower levels alot of players would play both. But unusual at the top level these days as too much commitment required.
The cultural divide isnt as bad as what it use to be. Some private schools will still be all rugby and snobby about it but there is a GAA club in most villages in ireland. The old traditionalists of the GAA would still frown upon any 'foreign' sports being played on gaa grounds, but all that is changing.
They are not professional as in getting paid but pretty much full time training. GAA would never be able to have the facilities they do around the country if it was professional.
Maybe one day. WIth private investment. JP Mcmanus puts alot of money into sport in Limerick.
And as for the goalie! Well if they didnt have one, it would be a goal scored every minute instead of a point! There was a great save in the match today if you were watching it.

Well done limerick. Had them winning by 10 before the game. Class team.
Thanks for that. I must admit that I flicked in and out of it. Watched about 20 mins in total. Only change I would make as a first time viewer would be to get rid of the high posts and make it so the ball has to go in the goal for any points to be scored!

EDIT, hope the player with the knee injury is OK. Never good when a player goes down with no-one challenging him.
20 years ago a goalkeeper would be viewed just as a goalstopper, but more recently the role of re-starting the game has become more important. The goalie was always generally the guy who could hit the ball the furthest. They used to hoof the ball up the field and hope for the best. These days the top level goalies would be playmakers passing straight to a free man. If that lad can then pass to a free forward, you would expect a score 8 times out of 10.

That's all lovely and stuff, but let's not mince words. A goalkeeper is a harvester of skulls. Was then. Is now and forever shall be. Everything else is fluff.

Except ankles and wrists. Harvesting those falls under an expanded original job description.

Fair play to Conor McKenna of Tyrone. I didn't see the game but the reports on the match suggested he had a big contribution in them beating Kerry.

Meanwhile his former club Essendon were soundly beaten yesterday in the first round of the AFL playoffs.

He got dogs abuse last year when he tested positive for Covid ultimately leading to him returning home. I'm sure he has no regrets now.

Hope they beat Mayo.

I think they had their final against Dublin.

I saw that game and Dublin were robbed. Maybe that's a good thing but I don't think Mayo will be able to reach that level of performance again.

I stay grounded by reflecting on the state of Limerick rugby...
Limerick rugby is such a funny one. Was reading on one of the gaa forums one Limerick gaa poster bemoaning the lack of contribution to the hurlers from the city and tbf he’s gotten a point. Bar na piarsaigh none of the other gaa clubs are serious about hurling. Monaleen st pats claughaun are football clubs mostly. It’s junior soccer that gobbles up the players. Trying to get embedded in county Limerick where generations will have only played hurling is v tricky but in parts of the city where parents and grandparents have played rugby it’s soul destroying
Munster are asleep at the wheel with regard a large population of Limerick

Ten defeats in twenty five years. Take Aidan O'Shea out and shoot him.

The sort of All Ireland season that Kerry normally take in a 'handy' win.

Mayo lost it rather than Tyrone winning, but as the Kerry folk will tell you, any AI win is good, 'handy' or otherwise.

Well done Tyrone.

Congrats to Westmeath. Well deserved.

It's as well that the Tailteann Cup final was enjoyable because Galway/Derry was absolute s***e.

Big fudge up with Hawkeye in that game but Galway were the better team in fairness.

Was fairly turgid stuff really for an all Ireland semi, you'd have to think that tomorrows winner should put away Galway reasonably easily......there'll be some meltdown in Mayo though if Galway actually rock up and win it

Kerry are some arrogant fuckers and maybe they think the job is done by beating Dublin.

Conor Cleary out for Clare.

Hopefully Limerick will finally click, they are definitely worth the win.

Limerick this year have won all their games playing at 70%.

At least Derry and Cork aren't wearing clashing colours due to commercial contracts with the kit suppliers. Shit game though.

Dublin v Mayo has to be better than this.

Re: The Offical GAA Thread

They need to limit the hand passes to two or three and have something like the Icing rule in Ice Hockey to stop the ball being played backwards just to keep possession.

The Aussies would annihilate us trying to play International Rules like that.

Is there a more unskillful thing in sports than a football hand pass? Why it's not banned for everything but short quick interchange passes I have no idea. What an absolutely dreadful spectacle this game has become.
