He has a very responsible job in the aviation authority.

His stepping down will have an effect as other Dublin players may follow.

Greatest coach ever in GAA though. Signs out at the top.

Great for the hope of other counties. That Dublin side never would have been beaten had he stayed for another 3-4 years

It's a very tough act to follow, but the good thing for his successor is he has gone out on top and hasn't wrung every last drop out of these players.

Agreed, continuity is a good thing here, no need to throw the baby out with the bath water. I suppose it depends on what role he played in the group dynamic.

when I was a nipper my dad took me to my first hurling match to watch his old club when I was visiting grandparents in cork. I have a feeling it was the county semi or final. St Finnbars vs Blackrock (I think) one of the Blackrock players smashed 2 players with his hurley in the face in off the ball incidents. both were hospitalised with huge lacerations. he didnt even get sent off because the ref didnt see either incident in the end I think he was subbed to protect him as the match was getting out of hand. Still amazes me to this day the fella wasnt prosecuted for gbh.

Cork 3-12 Westmeath 1-14

4 point win for Cork.

Have to say that's serious progress for Westmeath holding a team like Cork hurlers to 4 points.

I'd say the conditions levelled it a bit but delighted with that .

Hmmm. It's just Donal Og has got more going on than simply being gay, and it's that to which I suspected Banana Man was alluding to.

Typed this on the fly on the phone, should have clarified

McCaffrey is on the record in saying how he didn’t like the public side of being a GAA star in Dublin - think the quote was “people think they own you” and heard murmurings a few years ago about his personal life.

Perhaps it is desire to step out limelight.

Regardless its a hit for Dublin

Donal Og is still doing punditry. Wouldn't say he's keeping himself out of the limelight or the rumour mill.

The Dubs especially for amateur players get a serious amount of coverage even outside the sport.

I'd say it's tough for their players.

Only really those that want it & have leveraged it into a living (Brogan, Philly etc). How often does Cluxton appear in the media?

So he wants to be able to ride all around him in peace and quiet?
Can't fault him for that really.

Don't think it's a one size fits all.

Anyway, could be moot. Could just be sick of mad hours at work and serious commitment with Dubs

Burnout from long commutes for intercounty is a serious issue. I think Chris Barrett of Mayo was the subject of an article last year that said they crammed a few Mayo lads into a car in Dublin and still managed to make 3-4 Castlebar training sessions a week. I can't even imagine doing 5 hour round trips after work.

5 Celtic crosses in 7 years and man of match in 2 finals. You’d have to be very motivated to keep going.

Reckon a lot of lads who work in healthcare may step away. Doubt he’s had any down time in months.

Really can’t see the other point being an issue in 2020
