You have a preponderance of people in their 20s who do not earn much money and therefore favour large amounts of state handouts to subsidise their lifestyles.

The FT made the point that there is very little support, indeed, vague hostility is more likely for certain groups, such as white working-class males even though they are objectively more in need of state support than some bird who is studying to be a nurse.

There was a great piece in the IT a while back talking about the modern shift towards jobs that have high social capital but low income on a similar line. Middle-class kids open up bars, restaurants, etc, or become "creatives" and demand to be subsidised at a middle-class level. Meanwhile, they would never go into a job with low social-capital but high-income such as a trade.

I blame educate together schools.
It's not a new phenomenon, but yeah the demographics of social media definitely skews opinions and makes everyone think they are in the majority.
I'm reading Night watch at the moment, and Vimes has good bit where he's thinking about the revolutionaries
There were plotters, there was no doubt about it. Some had been ordinary people who'd had enough. Some were young people with no money who objected to the fact that the world was run by old people who were rich. Some were in it to get girls. And some had been idiots as mad as Swing, with a view of the world just as rigid and unreal, who were on the side of what they called 'the people'. Vimes had spent his life on the streets, and had met decent men and fools and people who'd steal a penny from a blind beggar and people who performed silent miracles or desperate crimes every day behind the grubby windows of little houses, but he'd never met The People.
Night Watch is my favourite book of all time.

Again, not quite a direct parallels, but very close.
You can swap in "Shinner" for "Trumper" and you're not a million miles off a lot of the time.

Maybe, MAYBE this sort of shit peels off SU dopes as they wake up a bit and some middle ground protest votes. Doubt it though.

I can't find the passage from Interesting TImes, but it boils down to the Red Army trying to start a revolution for the good of the common people and being utterly convinced in their earnest wide-eyed naivety that they know what's needed after the Empire has been overthrown.
Eventually Rincewind stops a peasant who's keeping an eye on his water buffalo (tethered by a piece of string) what he really, really wants in life.
The guy thinks hard on it for a few minutes and then says that a longer piece of string would be nice.

The guy thinks hard on it for a few minutes and then says that a longer piece of string would be nice.
"You see those armies over there?" he said.

The buffalo holder concentrated his gaze.

"Yes," he decided.

"They're fighting for you."

The man did not appear moved by this. The water buffalo burped gently.

"Some want to see you enslaved and some want you to run the country, or at least to let them run the country while telling you it's you doing it really," said Rincewind. "There's going to be a terrible battle. I can't help wondering...What do you want?"

The buffalo holder absorbed this one for consideration, too. And it seemed to Rincewind that the slowness of the thought process wasn't due to native stupidity, but more to do with the sheer size of the question. He could feel it spreading out so that it incorporated the soil and the grass and the sun and headed on out into the universe.

Finally the man said:

"A longer piece of string would be nice."

"Ah. Really? Well, well. There's a thing," said Rincewind. "Talking to you has been an education. Goodbye."

Ahh..

It was pretty nuts when I was growing up. There were almost bragging rights about how scummy the scumbags were in your area. Darndale was end of conversation.

Over time the scumbags either died or were locked up to the point where it seemed like a normal estate. Some eijets were even buying houses in there in the last few years.

There's a new generation of the same scumbags out now.
