Ons tegniese bestuurder gaan gereeld Struisbaai toe, hy sê die geelstert loop oop. Hy bring saam en verkoop hier teen R 50/kg, die kleintjies is ver oor 4 kg.

I have a theory: since they banned Great White shark killing, the seals are getting eaten in False Bay and this means the fish stocks are better protected. Means bigger fish for sport anglers.

Proper summer now in the Boland, much easier to braai early evening, kids can run around outside as it's only getting dark around 8pm. Steak tonight, maybe a few chops for tomorrow lunch as well.

Come on guys, let's keep this fred positive.

Regarding wood, what are you paying these days and what do you use? Got a quote for 1 000 Rooikrans packed for R 1 350 and Black Wattle packed for R 900. I usually buy Black Wattle as I like to make big fires for gees.

I think that there are 2 options. You open something like Dales which gives good food at good prices but relies on huge turnover or you go fine dining. Very expensive. Only open for dinner 5 nights a week.

Bom fire. I learned from my Struisbaai neighbour, making them. He lit the bom fire at 15h00 and we can only start braai from 20h00. He also taught me the skill of braai regop rooster on the side of the fire. Works a treat with ribbetjie and chicken (slow heat). Controlling the heat on the meat this way and only braai normal on a very high rooster to finish it off.

Option 2 is the way I see it...big turnover and low margin equals large rental and big staff....fine dining gets the business people on expense cards...but it must be done right. I laugh at these so called " best steak houses " that cook on gas grills. The steaks may be great quality but the cooking process adds nothing...

About R40 bucks for a big bag of swarhaak.

R36 for nice hardwood, but small bag.

We don't have great choice in Bloemfontein. Some people sell Kameeldoring, but don't know how legal it is.

Look at Sandy's comment. Complaining about "carbon footprint" and "air quality" after a boMfire as oom calls it. But Sandy is a pom now so I guess that makes sense.
