Do they spiral? I think they are meant to not have any spin on them at all - like the knuckleball in baseball.
Austin Healy explained it was similar to kicking a normal spiral, but the point of the ball faces up instead of angled down. Sounds tricky to me.

I understood it to mean the axis of the ball is nearer vertical rather than tilted forward, but I was a lock so my feet were solely for tripping over and booting scrum halves.
