Broke in the last hour, Andrew Luck has notified the Colts he's retiring. Press conference Sunday.

He's not even 30! I read through an article on this and while its tough I've heard worse. He should has just taken an unpaid sabattical and see how he feels after that. Bit odd decision.

A bit of a shock.

Can't say I blame him. Tens of millions in the bank, enough for him and his family to live more than comfortably for the rest of their lives - it's the kind of money where doubling it isn't going to make much, if any, difference to your standard of living. So it comes down to weighing up the small chance of winning a Super Bowl (and the likelihood of getting in the HoF), vs avoiding the pain and suffering and stress of repeated injuries. Reckon I'd be looking at enjoying life after football myself.

Probably not the only factor in it, but you do have to wonder how much of his injury woes were down to that terrible neck-beard he sports? If he had gone clean-shaven or grown proper facial hair, he would probably have had a Farve-esque run with avoiding injury.
'
I guess with Brissett the Colts are probably in a better position than most to deal with an genuine franchise QB departing. Though "Jacoby" is a name that is almost as un-likeable as Luck's neck-beard.

The Colts and Texans are really doing their best to help the Jaguars make the playoffs this year :proud:

So just take a year out and see how you feel. If its still the same then retire. That's all I am saying.

He can always come out of retirement in a year or two. It allows the Colts to move on however - if he said he "will take a year off and re-assess next year", that would be hanging over them and Jacoby Brissett's status as either "their guy moving forward" or potentially "just a placeholder".

WTF are the Texans doing?

Traded Clowney for about the equivalent of what a team will get back if he leaves in free-agency (after royally fucking up his holdout, by trying to trade him just as he was willing to sign his tender). Then trading two firsts and a second for Laremy Tunsil. Sure, he's an absolute stud, but two firsts and a second? That's just insane.

Miami and the Seahawks making out like bandits.

The Dolphins are looking odds-on for the number one pick next year too.

I am not sure Tunsil is that much of a stud (yet). They (Texans) probably could have gotten a better haul had they split the picks up.

Texans are all in this year.
Then they're totally fücked until 2025.

Question is: all in for what?

If they don't win the division this year, and with Luck out they should then BOB needs sacked.

In other news:

Jets gonna Jet - third round draft pick Jachai Polite is cut only a few months after being drafted.
He had been touted as a possible 1st rounder until a poor performance at the Combine and terrible interviews spelled "character concerns".
Slipped to the 3rd round with some people thinking the Jets had got a steal.
Maybe not when you read the report of him turning up 20 lbs overweight...

Polite was considered a possible first-round pick after recording 11 sacks last season for the Gators, but his stock plunged in the offseason. He slipped to the 68th pick, which probably cost him $10 million in his contract.
He bombed the scouting combine, showing up at 258 pounds (more than 20 above his playing weight), running a slow 40-yard dash (4.84 seconds), skipping the rest of the drills because of a hamstring injury and telling the media that certain teams "bashed" him in private interviews.
At his pro day, Polite injured his other hamstring and failed to break 5.0 seconds in the 40-yard dash (5.04 by the Jets' time). After the draft, two scouts, representing two different teams, told ESPN there were questions about his work ethic and commitment to football.

In other news, part 2:

Gruden's gonna Gruden

After surprising most people by keeping three QBs on the Raiders Roster (and cutting several pre-season stars), Jon Gruden has now picked up DeShone Kiser as a 4th QB.
Kiser was a 2nd round pick by the Browns a couple of years ago, got thrown to the wolves and went as bad as you'd expect. Back-up for a year in Green Bay.

Presumably Gruden thinks he can work his 'Quarterback Whisperer' magic on him.
To be fair, he's got Nathan Peterman looking like something better than the utterly clueless buffoon that threw 5 INTs in one half back in 2017.

I'm guessing that Glennon or Peterman will be offered up as trade bait to somebody sufficiently desperate for a backup QB...

Tunsil owns all the aces in that negotiation when it comes.

He wasn’t good in college. But Gruden has Notre Dame connections.

Peterman has been moved to IR. Still seems unnecessary to have added Kiser, as they should have been perfectly fine with just the two.

Gruden still has a raging boner for any Quarterback that he can "develop".

Read an interesting article a while back about the Raiders Control Room on Draft night.
Described Gruden as a kid on Christmas morning who wants to open everybody else's presents as well as his own and Mayock as "the only grown-up in the room", telling him to sit down and be patient. Gruden kept wanting to trade up for a player, fearing someone else would snatch them, meanwhile Mayock (as a draft process expert) had a pretty good idea who teams where trading up to grab and refused to budge. Was able to trade back in the 2nd round (and pick up a couple of later picks) by knowing who was available and what other teams were still looking for at that stage.
They wanted to trade back from the #4 pick but didn't get a call (I'd suggest they should have looking to initiate the trade if nobody was calling them but anyways).
So they took their first choice player anyway. I still think Devin Bush would have been fine to select at #4... he looks like an absolute stud and defensive linchpin.

For anyone who wants to see the fans expectations for their teams, have a browse through these.

That link is for the Chiefs, scroll down the page for links to all other teams.
Chiefs fans reckon they will go 16-0 and break every offensive record in the books.
Expert opinion is that they're going to high and 12-4, 13-3 is more realistic.

The Hawks article is fatally flawed as it's all pre Clowney trade.

Rams splash out $134M on extending Goff for another 4 years.
Cowboys finally pay up on Ezekiel Elliot, $90M for a 6 year extention.

Season kicks off tonight with Bears at the Packers.
Guess we'll find out how well Aaron Rogers has regained his fitness when Khalil Mack goes all KER-POW! on him for the first time.

My season predictions:

NFC West: Rams, Seahawks, 49'ers, Cardinals
NFC North: Packers, Bears, Vikings, Lions
NFC South: Saints, *Panthers, Falcons, Buccs
NFC East: Eagles, *Cowboys, Giants, Redskins

AFC West: Chiefs, *Chargers, Raiders, Broncos
AFC North: Steelers, *Browns, Ravens, Bengals
AFC South: Texans, Colts, Jaguars, Titans
AFC East: Patriots, Jets, Bills, Dolphins

* Wild Card Teams

NFC Championship: Rams beat Eagles
AFC Championship: Chiefs beat Patriots
Superbowl: Rams beat Chiefs

Good shouts there, but I'd go Saint's instead of Eagles in the NFC game (and maybe Saints to beat the Rams).

The other change is AFC North. Believe it or not (and I'm not a fan) but I reckon the Brown's or Raven's could win that div.

tbh, I'd be more comfortable making predictions AFTER week 1.
The problem with the NFL is most teams undergo a lot of changes from one season to the next.

Fair point - but not when you're trying to predict this season on the basis of last.

I don’t think he wants to play. The helmet thing seemed like an excuse now he is blowing up the relationship with his new GM.

Possibly, the helmet thing seemed a pretty good publicity setup for the helmet he opted to wear in the end

Not having him on the active roster for round 1 apparently voids all his salary guarantees. They can then cut him at any time during the season and he will only cost 1 million plus any salary he has earned up to that point (and the draft picks obviously). At this point, I think suspending him for round 1 is the smartest thing they can do - they then hold the leverage money-wise. If he holds the leverage, at some point he's likely to get pissy and refuse to play anyway - so really not that big of a risk.

Funnily enough I went into "Over The Cap" earlier today and happened on this article.

https://overthecap.com/the-raiders-and-antonio-brown/

It's from August 19th, so a couple of weeks old, but still...

The contract situation with Brown is somewhat straightforward but can also be somewhat complex. Brown, following a trade to Oakland, renegotiated his contract to raise his salary in 2020 and 2021 while also giving him $30.125 million in guarantees. Unlike most deals, however, Brown’s contract included no signing bonus so while the guarantees are large no money has likely exchanged hands yet outside of maybe a guaranteed workout bonus worth $500,000, that I am assuming he earned from the team this offseason.
Guarantees are a funny thing. They protect a player from not being paid for declining performance, being injured, or for any salary cap reasons, but in most cases they are easily voided. Though I am not familiar with the particulars of the Raiders contract with Brown, most contracts will see the guarantees void in a contract due to suspension from a team or the NFL, being arrested, refusing to report to camp, refusing to practice, personal conduct that reflects poorly on a team, non football related injuries preventing him from playing, retirement, engaging in an activity that brings on potential risks, etc… It is generally a very broad range of possibilities that will void the guarantee on a contract.
My assumption is that Brown has already done enough to warrant the Raiders to explore the possibility of voiding the guaranteed portion of the contract due to failure to practice. Even if that is not the case he has to already be close to the threshold needed to suspend some for conduct detrimental to the team, which would also likely void the guarantees on the contract.
If Brown’s guarantees void the Raiders would be able to escape the contract with minimal impact on their salary cap. The only charges at that point should be a $333,333 charge this year and $666,667 charge next season for the salary cap treatment of his guaranteed workout bonuses. The Raiders would offset $500,000 of that charge as a credit on next years cap, so basically this entire episode would just cost them $500,000.

To cut a long story short, the Raiders could, legitimately, suspend Antonio Brown, void his guaranteed money and fire his ass at the cost of $1M (over two years).
That would mean AB has just forfeited $29M, yes Twenty Nine Million Dollars

If you haven't heard the story, apparently he responded to being fined for missing practice & a team walk-through by posting the letter from his GM on Social Media and then shouting in Mayock's face yesterday, threatening to punch him and having to be dragged away by teammates! No, really!

P.S. That sniggering you can hear in the background is the Pittsburgh Steeler fans.

You can legit bet on how many games he'll get suspended for!

What a clown.

Hard Knocks could have done with this last week... what a boring ass show.

Anyway, 4-12 again? Win total is at 6. It opened at 6.5 - which is looking like easy money.
