Steelers have the same 6-5 record as the Rams & rank lower on points allowed per game (25th in the league), so I'm not sure that stat bears out the idea that 1st round picks are so important.

The absolute super stars tend to be in the 1st round, but there are plenty of All-Pros to be had in the mid-rounds. Trading back to stock up on bodies there can be a winning move, especially if you already have your superstars under contract. Of course, 2019 aside, that's not what LA has been doing and this year's 2 pick deal for Ramsey is going to be a car crash for us.

What stats are you looking at? They are 8th in the league for points allowed per game and top 10 in most categories. Ranked second in takeaways (#1 in fumble recoveries and #2 in INTs). Ranked third in sacks. They have an elite defense.

They are 6-5 because Rudolph was garbage and they have had serious injury problems at RB and WR.

Sorry, my bad, I glanced at NFL.com but had the filters set wrong. So yes, Steelers have a high-end defense, but just for the purposes of this debate let me point out that some of those 1st rounders come with an asterix:

Mark Barron: technically a 1st round pick but the Rams got him for a 4th + 6th round picks and Pittsburgh signed him from us as a FA. Not sure how relevant he is to a discussion on the importance of 1st round picks since he was a bust for the team (Tampa) who used that pick.
Similarly Joe Haden. 1st round pick of the Browns, picked up by the Steelers for free after release.

I take your point, don't waste 1st rounders because it is where the elite talent tends to be found but the two guys above show that bargains are out there and in counterpoint to the Steelers, the Patriots have a better defense but only 2 of them cost New England a 1st round pick. I suppose you could say that franchise is the exception that proves the rule. Absolute masters of farming rounds 2-4 for quality players who fit their system.

Players on rookie deals are (much) cheaper than players acquired through Free Agency - until you reach the bargain basement.

You're looking to get four years use out of as many drafted players as possible - so that you can spend your money on high impact players elsewhere in the roster.
To this end, it is desirable to have as many picks as possible.
But also to pick earlier when you have a better chance of getting the quality of player you are looking for.

There's no guarantees, but it does improve your chances.

Pro Bowlers per year:

Year: 1st Round, Rounds 2-3, Rounds 4-7, Undrafted

2013: 12, 13, 4, 6
2014: 17, 7, 3, 6
2015: 10, 5, 3, 0
- - - - - - - - - - -
2016: 7, 7, 5, 1
2017: 7, 5, 3, 0
2018: 5, 0, 1, 1

The classes up to 2015 have completed their four year rookie deals.

But if you've cooks, Donald Goff and Gurley(and they're not shit) locked in until after the 3 years are up I'm not sure it's that big a problem. You probably won't feel it until year anyway.

Elsewhere, it looks like the Cowboys are itching to get rid of the coach and extend the Eagles season. We won't overatake them on points difference as a tiebreaker(19 in 60 mins) but they could lose to the Rams;.......

Up for work and knackered but was worth it to watch the Bills to the end of the game! Happy with that performance. Step in the right direction.

Great win, might quieten down the talk of the Bills schedule etc and them only beating bad teams. Next week will be very tough though.

Next two weeks then Steelers D deserves respect too.

The team is still developing but the signs are a bit more positive. Oliver has come onto a game recently.

It now feels like "his team". Lots of growing to do but his floor feels higher that it was.

I know we are a mile away from being a big factor in the play offs but I love a lot of things about this team and some key parts soulf be around for a long time.

Allow me to dream before reality sets in but if the Bills win out then we'd be number 1 seeds I think. That would be something different.

Although I expect us to finish 9-7 or 10-6.

So has Brady gotten old finally or does his receiving corps just suck?

About a year ago he was touting his fitness program that could see him play until he's 45.

Reports of flu in the team last week.
Supposedly the team flew in 2 planes to the game.
1 lot ok , 1 lot sick but might recover.

Probably both, but more the latter.
Not only does he not have top level targets, apart from Edelman, but he personally had a bad game against Houston. I won't rule them out for the SB though.

It's quite the slump by Brady standards. Maybe he's not done yet but eventually old father time will catch up.

That’s all true, but like I said, he is not helped by his targets either. Apart from Edelman, he is throwing to a rookie who is coming back from injury and an undrafted free agent. His TE’s are also nowhere near the level of Gronk.
I’m not saying he would be an MVP QB if the above was not the case, but it’s definitely a contributing factor...

Kirk Cousins gets called out by his own team-mate - starts playing out of his skin.
Mitch Trubisky gets benched - starts playing out of his skin.

Some times it works.

NFC East

Cowboys at 6 - 7
Eagles at 5 - 7 with a game in hand.

They play each other soon, so between them they'll win one more game this season.

One of them has got to win the division and then host a wild-card game.
Probably against the loser between Seattle and San Francisco.
That's going to be a brutal butt-fücking in their own back yard.
Might be better to give the play-offs a tactical miss this season.

Thought the Saints stole it. 49ers made a break on a 4th down then got a face mask call.

Robbie Gould nailed the FG

Copybook tackle by Tannehill after he threw that pick...

Jacobs out for the Raiders - but Washington cashes in. Nice start.

EDIT: And Henry gets it right back. He's in for a big day...

First time I've actually been nervous this season. I've been downplaying their abilities (we've lost the close ones) and was already to stick with that agenda. But along comes Kittle. The mighty Kittle. :D . Great game.

Kittle is sensational. You're half the team without him.

Now let's hope the Rams help you out later...

Yes, but Seattle my second team (location based) so hard to root against them. I don't mind not winning the division, as long as we don't have to go up to Green Bay. I'll take Dallas or Phillie. :D
