Turned a 9-3 deficit into a 17-9 lead.

Meanwhile, Bengals season is officially over as Joe Burrow gets carted off with a (knee?) injury.
The only thing more surprising than the decision to play Hill primarily in the pocket is that it's actually working. He's only ran the ball a handful of times today, and only once on a designed run IIRC, just the occasional scramble.

He's had a couple nice throws, not sure why everybody's making out like he can't do it. A couple of bad underthrows on deep balls, but other than that he's been fine.

Saints D outstanding again

Just one TD given up in the past 3 weeks (and that was on the opening drive)

Steelers-Ravens game tonight postponed until Sunday.

Leaves us the 2 traditional Thanksgiving games at Detroit and Dallas which are 3-7 at 4-6 and 3-7 at 3-7, respectively.

Anyway, settling in to watch the 1 time all year I care about Detroit football.

Thanks for posting FR, didn't realise the kick off was so early!

The Thursday night cripple fights have been strangely entertaining this year. Eagles-Giants in October was a particular highlight. Hoping for more of the same this evening.

It will just always be easier to gain 75-80 yards primarily passing than running, especially with the way today's game is officiated. And God help you if you fall behind.

That said, I do like how teams are more open to it nowadays. If you can still pose a credible threat through the air, it might work.

I will go to my grave saying Tebow could have been a success in the NFL if someone was willing to buy into what he offered. But he just came on the scene 5-7 years too early. But there's a reason his peers rated him the 95th best player in the league following his one full(ish) season. It's a tough job defending that, particularly when defenses around the league are constructed and drilled to play against the passing games that have become so utterly dominant.
I always thought the textbook guy for a "backfield quarterback" was Antwaan Randle El. He played QB at Indiana in college and in the pros they made him runningback at Pittsburgh. In a way he was a better Kordell Stewart than Kordell Stewart. Tebow is another one, but Randle El would've been my first choice. Backfield quarterback if you had to define the player type would be an excellent athlete that's not quite NFL starter caliber passer.

Stafford drops back to pass, throws, J.J. Watt deflects the pass, catches it, and runs it 20 yards for the touchdown. Texans miss the XP. 7-6 Detroit.

First play next drive, Lions run and fumble the ball to the Texans. Texans defense's first two takeaways in the first half all year. Following a defensive pass interference call in the endzone, Watson throws a short TD. 13-7 Houston.

COVID Wreaks Havoc on Broncos, 49ers

28 Nov 2020, 06:48pm by

Vincent Verhei

The weirdest season in a long, long time just got even weirder.

We start in Denver, where every quarterback on the roster has been ruled ineligible for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Backup Jeff Driskel has tested positive and was placed on the COVID reserve list on Thursday. On Saturday, it was announced that every other quarterback on the roster -- Drew Lock, Brett Rypien, and Blake Bortles -- had been in close contact with Driskel without a mask and would ineligible this weekend. Broncos coach Vic Fangio said earlier this year that running back Royce Freeman would be the team's emergency quarterback; practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton also played quarterback for three seasons at Wake Forest.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco -- or, more precisely, Santa Clara -- the county has issued a ban on all contact sports over the next three weeks. The ban goes into effect on Monday, which means no practices or home games for the 49ers until December 21. That would affect two scheduled home games for the 49ers: a Monday night game on December 7 against the Buffalo Bills and a December 13 contest against the Washington Football Team. The team had no comment on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers are scheduled to play the Rams tomorrow afternoon in Los Angeles.
I'd expect some twisting of arms for it to not apply to the 49ers. Throw on top of this Ravens-Steelers was postponed to Tuesday, Ravens were supposed to play Thursday, that's been delayed to I think Sunday.

We're not holding playoffs and major college bowl games without some level of shenanigans at this point.

Lions fired head coach Matt Patricia and their GM today. If I was the Lions I'd ditch Stafford in offseason. It's time for someone new.

Re Broncos' use of an emergency QB:

"RB Royce Freeman and WR Kendall Hinton will likely take snaps for the Broncos at QB on Sunday. The last time a non-QB started for an NFL team (regular season or playoffs) was in 1965, when RB Tom Matte made a pair of starts for the Colts."

Hinton looks likely to start. PRACTICE SQUAD WIDE RECEIVER. Played some quarterback in college at Wake Forest. They're not allowed to sign a guy tonight and bring him in due to Covid protocols. Betting spread on the game has moved from Broncos +5.5 to +14.5.

Santa Clara County's counsel in story I read said it applied to the 49ers, as well as Stanford and San Jose State University football.

Imagine the Oakland Raiders' old stadium gets dusted off for a few weeks.

They did. All tested negative. But they weren't wearing a mask in Driskel's vicinity...when players in huddles or on sidelines aren't. Like most things with this virus, it's a lot of pretending.

Broncos inquired to the league on if they could suit up one of their two assistant coaches that were former QBs. League ssid no. While no longer being active players, they would've at least had the benefit of knowing the playbook while this guy Hinton won't.

Frankly the league are not treating everyone the same here. Compare this to the Ravens right now or the Patriots earlier in the season before they played the Broncos when Cam Newton tested positive. They delayed the game, Broncos lost their bye week, and the Patriots backup QB tested positive morning after the game.

I know the Broncos season is done and we're not making the playoffs anyway, but this kind of shit will be happening in the playoffs and the major bowl games and that's just not going to be accepted by the majority of fans.

The NFL have a growing quality control issue at this point. They have more than enough power to kick the season out a few weeks to relieve some of the strain on the game.

There's precedent too. 9/11 they moved the whole season back a week. They don't even have to move the Super Bowl. Add a week 18 to the season, and make the 2-week break between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl 1 week.

This Tuesday night Steelers-Ravens game looks like it is going to be something else. The Ravens will still have some semblance of a gameplan unlike the Broncos (Hinton said post-game the playbook was cut down to about 20 to 30 plays), but I think it's 15 to 20 guys out for them.

I think they always should have had a contingency to move the Super Bowl to late February.

The NFL seem to be talking about Playoff bubbles now at least, the issue might be getting there. Next week or so could see greater outbreaks.

Steelers-Ravens game delayed about 18 hours to Wednesday at 3:40pm. 3:40pm apparently because NBC was showing the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and did not want to interrupt that.

I'm not sure why you delay from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon unless the NFL are looking at their rules and trying to skate through on a technicality regarding Ravens players that would not qualify to play on Tuesday but can on Wednesday due to enough time has passed. Meanwhile they had a team play a game on Sunday with a practice squad wide receiver at quarterback.

This is not a good look for the league. The game should have been called off early and given both rest before an eventual week 18. They can not seriously have expected the straight 17 weeks.

Yeah, they should have at least scheduled no bye weeks before the halfway point and added in a spare week, giving them a lot more flexibility for postponing games.

It is mostly my fault though - I finally signed up for GamePass for the season and immediately the Raiders started Raidering and Covid began a full double-fisting of the schedule...

Only the Jets! Jaysus!

Apparently in 40 years, across over 500 plays meeting the criteria:
- less than 15 seconds remaining
- team in possession needs a TD to win
- and they're past halfway with the opportunity to reach the end zone

No defending team has EVER brought the house and blitzed everyone not in single coverage.

Until yesterday.

Tthe Jets bring 7 with an 8th stepping up when Carr scrambled forward to avoid pressure, and leave Henry Ruggs (4.27 in the 40y dash) in single coverage... you can guess what happened next

In other news, Browns put 38 on the Titans - in the first half!
But need a 4th quarter interception and then recover the Titans attempt at an onside kick to secure the win 41-35.

Patriots do what they normally do to a rookie QB, Justin Herbert gets battered 45-0.

Lions win immediately after sacking Matt Patricia and Bears blow a 10 point lead in the final 5 minutes (Trubisky gets strip sacked inside the final 2 minutes). Bears have lost 6 straight.

Seahawks get beaten by the Giants who now have 4 wins in a row

Rams on a roll, Colts & Dolphins dig out good wins.
Saints defence continues to win games for them, although they had to survive a final play "Hail Mary".

The Jags give them no play room to win a game. After winning their opening game of the year (vs. the Colts!) and nothing since, they took Minnesota to overtime yesterday who kicked a game-winning field goal with a minute and a half left.

Broncos last night actually played well against K.C., losing 22-16. We held the offense to 1 touchdown, but 5 field goals. Key with hindsight was right before half our kicker who has been awesome missed a 53-yarder. Chiefs rallied down the field and while they almost scored a touchdown, kept them out, and they were forced to take the field goal. But what could've been a 13-6 halftime lead turned into a 10-9 halftime lead. Defense played great. Offense struggled at times. Ran the ball well, but the passing game with Lock needs some work.

That's not even the craziest halftime to full time score comparison from yesterday. Colts and Texans combine for 44 points in the 1st half with Indy up 24-20. The whole 2nd half, nothing except the Colts' defense scored a safety.

Cam Newton's statline that game is something.

Passing: 12/19 for 69 yards, 1 TD
Rushing: 14 carries for 48 yards, 2 TD

Jarrett Stidham (backup QB brought in with the huge lead): 2/3 for 61 yards, 1 TD

Oh my God, I just read this at Football Outsiders' Audibles column.
Dave Bernreuther: FanDuel Sportsbook posted earlier that someone made a $25 preseason bet on the Jets' first win being today. At +25000! It's 7-0 early, and I'd love to know who made that bet, and if this game stays close, I'll also love to know whether he has any fingernails left in about two hours.

...

Bryan Knowles: Oh, Jets.

Vince Verhei: OH MY GOD.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD.

Rob Weintraub: You can't convince me the Jets didn't throw that game...

Vince Verhei: OK.

So.

Jets go three-and-out on three straight runs. That includes a run on third-and-6 where they went out of bounds, but got a very generous call from the officials, who ruled forward progress had been stopped and the clock kept running.

Raiders get one more chance when Agholor gets three steps behind the defense on a post, but Carr totally overthrows him. Game over right?

Wrong.

Scott Spratt: Remember when Andy Dalton upset the Ravens in Week 17, 2017, and suddenly became a hero in Buffalo since that win put the Bills in the playoffs? I feel like Henry Ruggs may be New York's new favorite son -- a remarkable turnaround from 45 minutes ago when his fumble allowed the Jets to pull ahead in the fourth quarter.

Bryan Knowles: How do you leave an undrafted corner one-on-one with Ruggs in that situation? Gregg Williams, what on earth are you doing?

Rob Weintraub: The Raiders are going to slip into the playoffs based on the Jets playing -- literally -- Cover-0 with seconds to play, and everyone will conveniently forget how they got there.

Dave Bernreuther: Rob, it's because Jon Gruden is excellent and very much worthy of his contract.

This result is especially hilarious to me because for years, almost every comment by sharp viewers about Gregg Williams has been to mock him for leaving a safety so far down the field that it looks like he's defending a Hail Mary.

Aaron Schatz: I doubt seriously that Gregg Williams specifically called a Cover-0 defense on that last play so the Jets would lose on purpose. Losing doesn't help the current coaching staff, they won't be around next year to enjoy the draft picks. Gregg Williams called a Cover-0 because he's Gregg Williams and that's just how he rolls.

Bryan Knowles: Gregg Williams is just waiting to invent the Cover-Minus-1 defense.

Scott Spratt: Did anyone point out how much that Ruggs touchdown cost the mystery bettor?

Dave Bernreuther: $6,250 on a $25 bet, Scott.

Working in DFS, I've seen far worse beats, dollar-wise, but man ... to be that close to being emphatically proven right on a call that specific ... he must feel like he got stabbed in the gut.
Don't bet ladies and gentlemen for your own sanity.

Might be my least favorite unwritten tradition in the league. Part due to these guys are all very old men now, part due to they only had a 14-game regular season, and part due to Miami really hasn't done shit in the 48 years since including when they had Dan Marino at quarterback. I hate Belichick and Brady-led New England, but wish they had won that Super Bowl.

And as far as Super Bowl-winning teams go, the '72 Dolphins weren't even that dominant. The '85 Bears or the late '80s 49ers teams or the '91 Redskins run circles around them.
