Could have been worse - could have been the Raiders

F*ck me that was dire!
Some people a bit to full of themselves after LOSING last week.

Next up, they're at the Jets

Jets might actually have to make an effort next week - to protect the No 1 overall pick

For the record, 31-3 loss and practice squad wide receiver playing quarterback was 1-out-of-9 for 13 yards and 2 INTs.
The NFL have a growing quality control issue at this point. They have more than enough power to kick the season out a few weeks to relieve some of the strain on the game.

There's precedent too. 9/11 they moved the whole season back a week. They don't even have to move the Super Bowl. Add a week 18 to the season, and make the 2-week break between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl 1 week.

This Tuesday night Steelers-Ravens game looks like it is going to be something else. The Ravens will still have some semblance of a gameplan unlike the Broncos (Hinton said post-game the playbook was cut down to about 20 to 30 plays), but I think it's 15 to 20 guys out for them.

I think they always should have had a contingency to move the Super Bowl to late February.

The NFL seem to be talking about Playoff bubbles now at least, the issue might be getting there. Next week or so could see greater outbreaks.

I think at this point the thinking is: we made it this far, let's just barrel through these last few weeks.

If it starts to affect playoff teams/seedings (see Ravens), it could get interesting...

Steelers-Ravens game delayed about 18 hours to Wednesday at 3:40pm. 3:40pm apparently because NBC was showing the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and did not want to interrupt that.

I'm not sure why you delay from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon unless the NFL are looking at their rules and trying to skate through on a technicality regarding Ravens players that would not qualify to play on Tuesday but can on Wednesday due to enough time has passed. Meanwhile they had a team play a game on Sunday with a practice squad wide receiver at quarterback.

This is not a good look for the league. The game should have been called off early and given both rest before an eventual week 18. They can not seriously have expected the straight 17 weeks.

Hard not to be concerned by the play-offs.

Yeah, they should have at least scheduled no bye weeks before the halfway point and added in a spare week, giving them a lot more flexibility for postponing games.

It is mostly my fault though - I finally signed up for GamePass for the season and immediately the Raiders started Raidering and Covid began a full double-fisting of the schedule...

Only the Jets! Jaysus!

Apparently in 40 years, across over 500 plays meeting the criteria:
- less than 15 seconds remaining
- team in possession needs a TD to win
- and they're past halfway with the opportunity to reach the end zone

No defending team has EVER brought the house and blitzed everyone not in single coverage.

Until yesterday.

Tthe Jets bring 7 with an 8th stepping up when Carr scrambled forward to avoid pressure, and leave Henry Ruggs (4.27 in the 40y dash) in single coverage... you can guess what happened next

They really are that desperate to secure the #1 pick

In other news, Browns put 38 on the Titans - in the first half!
But need a 4th quarter interception and then recover the Titans attempt at an onside kick to secure the win 41-35.

Patriots do what they normally do to a rookie QB, Justin Herbert gets battered 45-0.

Lions win immediately after sacking Matt Patricia and Bears blow a 10 point lead in the final 5 minutes (Trubisky gets strip sacked inside the final 2 minutes). Bears have lost 6 straight.

Seahawks get beaten by the Giants who now have 4 wins in a row

Rams on a roll, Colts & Dolphins dig out good wins.
Saints defence continues to win games for them, although they had to survive a final play "Hail Mary".

The Jags give them no play room to win a game. After winning their opening game of the year (vs. the Colts!) and nothing since, they took Minnesota to overtime yesterday who kicked a game-winning field goal with a minute and a half left.

Broncos last night actually played well against K.C., losing 22-16. We held the offense to 1 touchdown, but 5 field goals. Key with hindsight was right before half our kicker who has been awesome missed a 53-yarder. Chiefs rallied down the field and while they almost scored a touchdown, kept them out, and they were forced to take the field goal. But what could've been a 13-6 halftime lead turned into a 10-9 halftime lead. Defense played great. Offense struggled at times. Ran the ball well, but the passing game with Lock needs some work.

That's not even the craziest halftime to full time score comparison from yesterday. Colts and Texans combine for 44 points in the 1st half with Indy up 24-20. The whole 2nd half, nothing except the Colts' defense scored a safety.
Patriots do what they normally do to a rookie QB, Justin Herbert gets battered 45-0.
Cam Newton's statline that game is something.

Passing: 12/19 for 69 yards, 1 TD
Rushing: 14 carries for 48 yards, 2 TD

Jarrett Stidham (backup QB brought in with the huge lead): 2/3 for 61 yards, 1 TD

Oh my God, I just read this at Football Outsiders' Audibles column.
Dave Bernreuther: FanDuel Sportsbook posted earlier that someone made a $25 preseason bet on the Jets' first win being today. At +25000! It's 7-0 early, and I'd love to know who made that bet, and if this game stays close, I'll also love to know whether he has any fingernails left in about two hours.

...

Bryan Knowles: Oh, Jets.

Vince Verhei: OH MY GOD.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD.

Rob Weintraub: You can't convince me the Jets didn't throw that game...

Vince Verhei: OK.

So.

Jets go three-and-out on three straight runs. That includes a run on third-and-6 where they went out of bounds, but got a very generous call from the officials, who ruled forward progress had been stopped and the clock kept running.

Raiders get one more chance when Agholor gets three steps behind the defense on a post, but Carr totally overthrows him. Game over right?

Wrong.

Scott Spratt: Remember when Andy Dalton upset the Ravens in Week 17, 2017, and suddenly became a hero in Buffalo since that win put the Bills in the playoffs? I feel like Henry Ruggs may be New York's new favorite son -- a remarkable turnaround from 45 minutes ago when his fumble allowed the Jets to pull ahead in the fourth quarter.

Bryan Knowles: How do you leave an undrafted corner one-on-one with Ruggs in that situation? Gregg Williams, what on earth are you doing?

Rob Weintraub: The Raiders are going to slip into the playoffs based on the Jets playing -- literally -- Cover-0 with seconds to play, and everyone will conveniently forget how they got there.

Dave Bernreuther: Rob, it's because Jon Gruden is excellent and very much worthy of his contract.

This result is especially hilarious to me because for years, almost every comment by sharp viewers about Gregg Williams has been to mock him for leaving a safety so far down the field that it looks like he's defending a Hail Mary.

Aaron Schatz: I doubt seriously that Gregg Williams specifically called a Cover-0 defense on that last play so the Jets would lose on purpose. Losing doesn't help the current coaching staff, they won't be around next year to enjoy the draft picks. Gregg Williams called a Cover-0 because he's Gregg Williams and that's just how he rolls.

Bryan Knowles: Gregg Williams is just waiting to invent the Cover-Minus-1 defense.

Scott Spratt: Did anyone point out how much that Ruggs touchdown cost the mystery bettor?

Dave Bernreuther: $6,250 on a $25 bet, Scott.

Working in DFS, I've seen far worse beats, dollar-wise, but man ... to be that close to being emphatically proven right on a call that specific ... he must feel like he got stabbed in the gut.
Don't bet ladies and gentlemen for your own sanity.

Might be my least favorite unwritten tradition in the league. Part due to these guys are all very old men now, part due to they only had a 14-game regular season, and part due to Miami really hasn't done shit in the 48 years since including when they had Dan Marino at quarterback. I hate Belichick and Brady-led New England, but wish they had won that Super Bowl.

And as far as Super Bowl-winning teams go, the '72 Dolphins weren't even that dominant. The '85 Bears or the late '80s 49ers teams or the '91 Redskins run circles around them.

That's all fine and well, but they are the only ones who've done it. They had the top ranked offense and defense that year, and would have shut out the Redskins in the Super Bowl if Yepremian didn't have one of the most hilarious/embarrassing blunders of all time. And tbf they repeated the next year (and went to the SB the year prior) so it wasn't a fluke, those were great teams. Might agree on the '85 Bears or the '89 49ers though.

Edit: FWIW the thing about them literally busting out champagne every time the last undefeated team goes down is mostly myth. Apparently some of the guys that still live in Miami and like a drink get together, but that's it

Mercury Morris used to come on ESPN once a year come October or so when the last undefeated team lost and be very annoying about it.
Might agree on the '85 Bears or the '89 49ers though.
Yeah, little 7-year-old Broncos fan me, going to see John Elway lead them to victory over Joe Montana and crew. 55 to 10, still the worst Super Bowl loss ever.

Football Outsiders this past offseason went back to do the 1985 NFL season with their advanced statistical analysis, so they have in their database 1985 through now. Here's their top 10 teams in that era when you include the playoffs.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa- ... commentary
1. 1991 Washington Redskins 17-2
2. 1985 Chicago Bears 18-1
3. 2007 New England Patriots 18-1 (lost Super Bowl)
4. 1989 San Francisco 49ers 17-2
5. 1996 Green Bay Packers 16-3
6. 1987 San Francisco 49ers 10-3 (strike-shortened season, 3 games with scabs removed, lost in Divisional Round)
7. 2013 Seattle Seahawks 16-3
8. 1992 Dallas Cowboys 16-3
9. 1998 Denver Broncos 17-2
10. 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 15-4
They have estimates for teams pre-1985 in a separate article (their analysis is based on play-by-play, the further back you go the harder to find that stuff). This is everyone since the 1950 NFL-AAFC merger. The 1973 Dolphins make their all-time top 20 at 19th, but not the undefeated 1972 team. They have a paragraph about it.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa- ... -revisited
You’ve probably noticed that a few of the other usual suspects are absent from the list. Now that we've added six more years to our data, the undefeated 1972 Dolphins don't even rank among the top 40 teams since 1950. They were an excellent team, ranking No. 1 in both offense and defense that season, but were not dominant in any category. They are also held back by a weak schedule. Without opponent adjustments, they would jump up to ninth.
At the tail end of the article, they rank the 70 champions since 1950, and the '72 Dolphins are 16th. (The '07 Giants are 68th.)

If they were so shit, somebody else would have done it by now. I'm sure there have been plenty of "better teams" with softer SOS who tried and failed.

It's celebrated (very briefly, to be fair) because it's evidently an extremely hard thing to achieve. Dolphins fans don't give it much thought, it's very much ancient history for the fan base of a team that has underperformed hugely until very recently (read this year).

But for the guys themselves who did it? Why the hell not? When someone else achieves it, the party will be over.

The Patriots did do it and did one better. The '72 Dolphins went 17-0. The '07 Patriots went 18-0 and then lost the Super Bowl when a receiver pinned a ball against a defender's helmet.

I'm not saying they're shit. I'm saying they're not all that compared to other champions that have come since.

18 teams don't make the playoffs. It'd make sense to me to say the median non-playoff team be top pick. So do something like:

1. 23rd place team (10th-worst)
2. 24th place team (9th-worst)
3. 22nd place team (11th-worst)
4. 25th place team (8th-worst)
5. 21st place team (12th-worst)
6. 26th place team (7th-worst)
7. 20th place team (13th-worst)
8. 27th place team (6th-worst)

then you can go 32, 31, 30, 29, 28, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14

Gets rid of tanking at a certain level but also the notion you can be the worst team in the NFL, you're not turning around right away with just 1 guy. And I feel this reverse staircase is the way to go because even in the NBA where they have a lottery tanking is a serious thing there (and tanking is more justified than the NFL because in basketball that 1 guy can completely change a team's fortunes).

College Final from 2019.

Expected to be a tight affair between 2018 champions Alabama (QB = Tua) and 2017 champions Clemson. Third straight final between those two teams.

It wasn't close...

I might make the observation that Clemson's receivers (and Alabama's DBs) might have made Lawrence look better than he is - but he was bloody good regardless.

Btw, Clemson's QB in 2017 was Deshaun Watson...

I have a theory of sorts that good QBs on championship-level college teams don't pan out that often as far as NFL starter that's one of the best QBs in the league. The last one undeniably was Peyton Manning at Tennessee. After him, you're down to Cam Newton, Deshaun Watson, and Vince Young. Starters but not ones you'd expect to put you in the playoffs every year, let alone the Super Bowl. (It's been 20 years since Peyton was in college, so I'm probably forgetting a guy or two.) The best pro QBs seem to be ones that at college level didn't have the advantage of the rest of the team being so awesome over all their opposition. And that's SEC football to a tee: game manager QB, we'll destroy them with our superior athleticism in the backs, linemen, and linebackers. That's how Tim Tebow won a national championship, then goes to a pre-draft camp and gets told "you don't throw the ball right".
