That game really hurt Munster. Losing in Thomand in a HEC Cup 1/4 final to Ulster.

It nearly happened to us last year. Thank you Dropdale.

Strange game that, thought Munster would have won it handily at the time.

How Ulster didnt win a trophy during that period is bizarre. Went downhill pretty fast from 2013 onwards.

Diack was a good player.

Earl's silly comment aside, he made something like 200 appearances for Ulster and was a solid HEC level player.

The starting back-row that season was normally Fez, Henry and Wannenberg wasn't it?

Comparing the two sides from the final, the reason Ulster didn't win anything is that they were probably the second best first XV in the Pro 14 at the time and maybe 4th or 5th in Europe. That was the season before Toulon went nuclear as well.

Man for man they're slightly worse than Leinster in most positions for the 2012 and 2013 finals. The squad overall was much weaker though.

Compare the benches for the HEC Final:-

HK 16 Ireland Seán Cronin
PR 17 South Africa Heinke van der Merwe
PR 18 New Zealand Nathan White
LK 19 Ireland Devin Toner
FL 20 Ireland Shane Jennings
SH 21 Ireland John Cooney
FH 22 Ireland Ian Madigan
CE 23 Ireland Dave Kearney

versus

HK 16 Ireland Nigel Brady
PR 17 Ireland Paddy McAllister
PR 18 Ireland Declan Fitzpatrick
LK 19 Ireland Lewis Stevenson
FL 20 Ireland Willie Faloon
SH 21 Ireland Paul Marshall
FH 22 Ireland Ian Humphreys
CE 23 Australia Adam D'Arcy

It was something like SOB v International Standard Backrow Robbie Diack was even in a head-to-head prior to a Leinster v Ulster game. So you said International Standard Backrow Robbie Diack was as good as SOB basically.

I'm happy to admit that I didn't think SOB would be as good as he became. I thought he was a bosher with shit hands.

I also know I'm not alone in thinking that when he came through.

This was also Diack pre-knee injury when he was playing 8 and playing well.

Ulster had an excellent first 15 back then. Who never got a rest. And Fez was being held together with sticky tape.

Looking at the tables, it'd be hard to argue that the top 2 in each conference shouldn't take part in the semis.

Bit hard on Munster if it was a straight final.

But they'll probably find they can't play any games anyway.

That's probably the best solution. The final should be in Dublin though, as a reward for Leinsters season, but especially because they'll get a full/almost full LR. I don't think there'll be too many people travelling, even to Cardiff, in July.

Behind closed doors playoffs in June.

No summer tour.

Aim for starting next season in September.

Tbf, that was early in the first half. No way of knowing how the game would have gone after that.

Immediately after the Jennings try though so would have changed the feel of the opening 20 minutes where Ulster had conceded so early and then battered away for 20 minutes with no reward except for a Pienaar penalty.

I always knew SOB was the real deal right from the dragons game.

Might see if I can dig up those Racing pool games where he was so good.

Everyone is. There've been a few threads started about it.

Sidebar ads have broken the "submit" button, amongst others on Android Chrome. Try a different browser. Think opera works, adblock browser also does.

The year Ulster had Payne in top form, Bowe as a test lion and Trimble as Irish player of the season was the year we should have won something.

That back 3 was sensational, a young Olding, Jackson and Henderson were cutting their teeth withHenry and big Nick Williams carrying the backrow.

The Lancaster Cullen era is pretty great as well.
Peak Mad Dog made MOC era an interesting, albeit frustrating, experience.

He is literally half a yard from the line at full tilt before he tries the stupid spin.
Every bit as bad, and worse given the context of the importance of the game, than Carling’s f**k up.
