3 Days to go: 3 reasons to be in The Hague

As we get just three short days away from opening day of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, we take a brief moment to hit the highlights of this year’s men’s and women’s spectacle in the Hague. Below are three of the many important highlights including brilliant numbers, a variety of hockey and the fact that it’s all happening in one place!

3. Incredible numbers

This year's Rabobank Hockey World Cup is expected to be viewed by 386 million fans on television and a further one million watching via online YouTube streaming. The stadium at Kyocera holds 15,000 fans, while the Greenfields Stadium has space for 5,000 spectators meaning that over 14 competition days and 76 matches 250,000 ticket holders will file through the venue and surrounding Hockey Park. Add on that entering the World Cup FIH will have nearly 500,000 Facebook fans, 30,000 followers on Twitter and 8000 on Instagram to spread the news to!

2. A family occasion

The Hockey World Cup is a 16-day, 76-match showpiece. But it is not just the main event that will be taking place in The Hague. Masters and Grand Masters hockey will bring together 70 teams across the 40-65 age group, while a World Youth Tournament is also taking place. Not to be outdone, politicians and embassy staff are getting into the hockey spirit with an Embassy Tournament, pitching embassies – supplemented by ex-pats – against each other. There will also be the world's biggest beach hockey festival taking place at Scheveningen from 12-14 June. There will be no shortage of variety for the two weeks of hockey action.

1. Top hockey all in one place

This year sees the 13th edition of both the men’s and women’s Hockey World Cup, and in all that time, this is only the second time that the men's and women's event has been held at the same venue. The previous occasion was also in the Netherlands in the great city of Utrecht in 1998. The Australian men, who won in New Delhi, and the Argentinian women, who won in Rosario, will be looking to defend their 2010 World Cup titles.

Masters and Grand Masters hockey will bring together 70 teams across the 40-65 age group
About a dozen guys I play hockey against on a Thursday evening are travelling to Holland and will be representing South Africa in Grandmasters Hockey.

Selection for the National side seems to be: 1. Are you in the requisite age group? 2. Can you afford to take a few weeks off? 3. Can you afford the R40,000 it's going to cost you.

If you can answer 'yes' to those questions, you're given a book on the rules* of hockey and told to book your flights.

Still, good on them; I'd be in like a shot.

Some of the guys are playing well into their seventies. Not many reasonably exercise-intensive sports that you can play to that age group without some sort of manipulation of the rules* (a la Vets Rugby).

*Laws for the pedants.

I just dont hope SA Hockey tried the PoC for the old toppies. :o

Its an excellent idea to hold the Men and Women tournaments at the same time. Thats the good thing about the sport, the family thing.

We have one guy in the social side I play for on a Monday night who is going and who has let the notion of playing for his country go to his head a little.

On the other hand, I did play for our Province (Southern Gauteng, formerly Transvaal) earlier this year (the first representative sport I have EVER played, BTW), and I made the mistake of asking one of the guys if he was going to be taking part. "No," he says, "I wasn't selected."

So I suppose there is some kind of rudimentary selection process, particularly if the expense involved isn't that onerous.

 Thanks Farva, knew you would come and help me.

Anyways, watched the Dutch vs Korea match last night and whatta natch. Korea's passing and running from defense to attack surprised the Dutch and nearly a shock result. Gemans losing to Argentina a shocker and only the Proteas struggling in this group.

Today we'll have Aus vs Belgium (W) in two hours time, Malaysia vs England (M). Korea vs Japan (W). Belgium vs Aus (M), India vs Spain (M) and NZ vs Netherlands (W).

Regarding the tournament for men and women, we also have this in SA with our provincial IPT for youth at u13 level. Older ages its seperate tournaments. Myself enjoyed the two together because the teams support each other so well.

The bulk of clubs here are mixed, its one of the real pluses of playing hockey. My club for instance has 6 mens teams and 5 womens teams. There are separate competitions but we all play on the same grounds one after the other.
Having a day when half a dozen of your club sides are playing at the same ground is fantastic as you can have a game then spend the next perving and having a beer with your team mates.

Belgium should be a decent challenge for Aus. The quality of their game has improved drastically in the last 10 years.

Sticks played well. PC is so important and they used them well. Proteas have some serious problems. Their coach quited at the start of the year.

SA men's hockey coach quits

2014-01-17 10:38
Cape Town - Head coach of the South Africa men’s hockey team, Charlie Pereira, has resigned, the SA Hockey Association said in a statement on Friday.

Curry’s Post, KwaZulu-Natal resident Pereira, a chartered accountant who played 49 Tests for SA and has his own accounting practice, has said that his stepping down was primarily due to the absence of a primary sponsor, which had limited his plans for the teams preparation ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Pereira ends his tenure after successfully competing in the FIH World League Round 2 and semi-finals as well as the Africa Cup event , which saw the team qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

SA Hockey Association CEO Marissa Langeni said the national body would be discussing the men’s head coach position at their upcoming Executive Board meeting this weekend and will make a firm announcement thereafter.

The new coach will have to hit the ground running with a number of immediate commitments that are in place leading up to the World Cup in The Hague. The team will in February travel to Argentina for a Test Match Series, play a series vs world No 1 Germany in Cape Town in March and travel to the 23rd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia.

"The South African Hockey Association appreciates the good working relationship with Charlie over the last year and we as the national body wish him well in his future endeavours,” added CEO Marissa Langeni.

Couple of big games tonight.

Hockey roos playing the Dutch for top of the pool. I don't think they will do it.
Kookaburras playing the English for top spot too. Can't see England winning and these men must be all black style favourites to win the tournament.

No. Its both Mens and Womens.
Also, the title was correct before.
So it's a co-ed type deal? Makes a lot of sense.
Wow! You're such a tough dude, a real man's man. Do you actually play ice hockey or only admire the men that do?

Oom, verander asb die naam van die draad terug na wat dit was oorspronklik.

Done!

Was quite surprise to see our women beating England and then losing to China. Men got a hiding from the Dutch last night.

Dutch ladies was awesome against Australia. Great hockey.

Anyone see the Kookaburras goal against England where there was a flick from the halfway line to a player standing on the spot, who tapped it in.
Best hockey goal I have ever seen.
