As a fan of the English club rugby system - which is I assume what you're referencing - I struggle to see the comparisons between a 12-team league, with a salary cap and >50% English representation (rising to nearly 90% at one of the top 4 clubs), strong academies bringing through excellent young English talent, with a top notch pathway to the international setup... and the English football clubs.Duff Paddy wrote:Enjoying the World Cup?

You have completely missed the point but you're a better poster than most piggydoggies so I'll humour you. The soccer model revolves around the primacy of the clubs unlike the the traditional union based rugby model. We're seeing a shift in the balance of power in rugby, led by the English and the French spivs, unless of course you are denying that the English posters were overwhelmingly in favour en masse of the spiv H Cup power grab?JM2K6 wrote:As a fan of the English club rugby system - which is I assume what you're referencing - I struggle to see the comparisons between a 12-team league, with a salary cap and >50% English representation (rising to nearly 90% at one of the top 4 clubs), strong academies bringing through excellent young English talent, with a top notch pathway to the international setup... and the English football clubs.Duff Paddy wrote:Enjoying the World Cup?
Unless you're dumb enough to think that unfettered private investment is what we're all in favour of. But you're not dumb, are you Duff?
English/British same difference as you well know. The streets of Ballymena and Portadown will be in mourning tonight after seeing their boys get smashed.Winnie wrote:--DD-- wrote: Winnie and Fat cat are FURIOUS that their country just got humiliated on the world stage

Your problem is you can't see the wood for the trees. Asking for a fairer distribution of the monies from European competition - and a better handling of how it generates that money is one thing, but comparing it to football is just daft.Duff Paddy wrote:You have completely missed the point but you're a better poster than most piggydoggies so I'll humour you. Yes, the English and French clubs want more power in their relevant sphere. It's not about the primacy of club rugby, because the fight wasn't about club v country. No English fans look at the French model (typified by Toulon) and think that's a good thing - the vast majority of English fans like how club rugby is run in this country in terms of keeping things fair, having a salary cap, having a close relationship with the union. And every single English rugby fan understands that the popularity of the sport in this country has been and will forever be the international game.
You can't just wave your hand at football and screech about spivs - you actually have to prove that there's any comparison between the two. The only comparison is private ownership. And the clubs themselves vote to keep things sensible, because the clubs know which side their bread is buttered, and they know exactly how the sport works in this country.
The fight over a European club competition had nothing to do with the international side of the game. English clubs maintain an excellent relationship with their union - as you discovered to your distate last year - and there's a great symbiotic relationship regarding player availability, coaching, and development. Long may it continue
True. Last time I checked we were marginally better internationally speaking since the premiership and all that jazzChuckles1188 wrote:Also worth pointing out that I'm not convinced our dreadfulness at football is a cause de the EPL. We weren't exactly world-beaters before.

Come on ...you can surely do better than that.Womack wrote:A world cup where Ireland, Scotland and Wales aren't in attendance - long live the spiv model
And no England after last night....At least the team can come home even if football isin't.Womack wrote:Sorry, a 32-team world cup with several genuine title contenders...and no Ireland, Scotland or Wales.
And Uruguay have neither. Wonderful thing, ability.Womack wrote:Aye, but England has the population and wealth to at least have a chance of competing at one of these major tournaments. Wonderful thing, hope.
Last time I remember playing them at Rugby we won by about 100 points so clearly their ability is restricted to football. The Sun God wrote:And Uruguay have neither.
