People do take off when they get hit by a car. I've seen it happen in SA where a very large lady got whacked by a minibus. The poor bird went flying.

I remember when we were kids and had a tomato sauce bottle fight in the street. I chased some guy and he ran out in front of a car and got hit. He flew straight up, the car pretty much stopped and he landed almost in the same spot. I think he was lucky the driver was onto it and reacted in time.
He got up and limped off the road.

I know this, as will I guess many who've lived in Africa. last saw it when I was about 12, and I still can't forget it.
