I'm surprised Joe Pesci lasted even a minute in Limerick.

That is not a Lordi rip off it's Norwegian Black Metal bands who've been doing the corpse paint business since the early nineties.

His facts were wrong and your picture was (probably) right. That style of corpse paint is derived from the Norwegian black metal scene (though the bloke in the helmet/armour makes me think it could be a Polish or Czech band).

Lordi were more of a rip-off of Gwar costume-wise.

Finland did have a small but excellent early 90's death metal scene though (which is where my username comes from - the band I was listening to at the time I created my account).

I may be wrong but most people would see that as Lordi and therefore Finland .
If you parodied a 1970’s band with 2 women and 2 men ( one of whom with facial hair) then most people would think ABBA and Sweden and not Brotherhood of man from Uk

My comments were fair

A surprising number of people not into the music know about Scandinavian Black Metal. It achieved a fair amount of infamy due to the church burnings and murdering of band members. Lordi/Gwar style costumes are unique enough as to basically be limited to just those two bands, there's a lot more people on corpsepaint and hilariously over the top spiky leather wrist bands. I've always found that whole scene quite silly, even more so because of how seriously many of them take it.

At least these lads are fully clothed. The number of scrawny metal blokes topless or wearing sleeveless shirts while trying to look hard or intimidating...

Ok. I just went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about black metal and ended up reading this about a particular album.
The album is infamous for bearing a controversial photograph of Mayhem's singer, Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin), after his suicide in April 1991.[5] The photograph was taken by Mayhem's guitarist, Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth), when he discovered the body.[6] Dead slashed the veins in his arms and neck after leaving behind a song lyric titled "Life Eternal", along with a suicide note. He then took Euronymous' shotgun and shot himself in the forehead.

Euronymous took bits of Dead's skull and made them into necklaces for members of the Black Metal scene, including the band's drummer Hellhammer. They supposedly made a stew with the fragments of Dead's skull, which Hellhammer did not eat. In disgust with Euronymous' actions, the bass player Necrobutcher left the band and was replaced by Burzum's Varg Vikernes, who killed Euronymous two years later by stabbing him to death.
f**king hell. :uhoh:

In fairness it's primarily a handful of dickheads in the early 90s that did the most heinous stuff, but it's bad enough to have stuck to black metal in perpetuity.

My favourite incident remains Mayhem injuring a fan by chucking a sheep's head into the audience. I go to a lot of shows where, if you're not careful, you can catch a stray fist or foot and have had my share of bruises and split lips but never once have I thought 'You know what would make this even better? If the band were carving up a dead animal on stage and pelting bits of it into the crowd.'

An article like the one below emphasises 1. just how f**king try hard some of them are and 2) that some stuff just seems to be the acts of scumbags/mentally disturbed people who happen also to be into black metal. There are people who aren't doing the same or similar.

https://metalinjection.net/lists/top-10 ... sicians/10

Metal and it's various subgenres aren't really my scene, but i'm aware enough to know that most bands are absolutely fine, they just look a little silly and are maybe a bit over-earnest with all the satanism and misanthropy.

The best thing about Black Metal is that it took its name from a crossover metal/punk band, Venom who wrote a song called Black Metal. They were a group of English lads who did the pageantry for laughs and wrote songs such as Buried Alive (which is ridiculous and starts off with a muffled sound of a priest saying a funeral then the sound of dirt being dropped on the coffin) and one of my personal favourites, Teacher's Pet, which goes...

"Teacher caught me masturbating underneath the desk
She looked at me and winked her eye
And said see you after class"

With a chorus of "Teacher's wet, Teacher's wet, Teacher's pet."

To go from that ridiculous over the top hammy theatrics to church burning definitely shows some people missed the point along the way.

Black metal is the most ridiculous form of metal (just above folk metal and pirate metal.) But it can actually sound pretty decent (if you're into that kind of thing.) Difficult avoiding the Nazis though.

I didn't know that pirate metal was a thing, but I'm fairly sure that some has randomly come on on Spotify when I'm just listening to noise in the gym.

It's great.
